Just now finding your videos. This is great, underrated work you do here. Thank you so very much!
Glad you found this useful and thank you for the support!
Saw your post from the facebook group page. I can tell ima love your videos 🔥
Thank you for the support! Any other content you would like me to cover please give us a shout!
Thanks man!! This video was very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been looking into rebuilding my frs trans, I'm liking these synchros. Thanks for the info. Btw do you have a recommendation on gears and where to buy?
Great information! The Car Care Nut just posted a video comparing the GR86 to the GT86 and he mentioned that Subaru transmissions are jerky and to remedy that they are putting a carbon synchro on 4th gear, not all the gears.
Motul Gear 300 is what is the recommended transmission gear oil in our local 86 time attack group, although its not the best in these trans in cold weather.
I havent seen the video (please link), but he probably means 5th gear which is this the input shaft on these transmissions (normally 4th on many other transmissions)
I still recommend replacing all the synchros with CF units: if you had an entire transmission apart, why would you just replace one part?
@@CMAutohaus Here's the video, ruclips.net/video/tuKPgnPxBkY/видео.html the time stamp for when he mentions the manual transmission is around 15:45
@@avery4528 Ok understood and agreed. 4th gets the CF synchro from factory, but really all should have gotten the CF synchros. Another cost savings snafu! Horray Subaru!
Forensic transmission technology.
Guess that makes you a Forensic Transmission Technologist. Impressive.
Great video.
I hope Subaru sees this.
Thank you for the kind words. I was a Subaru dealer tech for about 3 years and I was not happy with how Subaru of America handled certain issues technicians had to deal with: online service manuals with gross errors are refused by SOA to be updated, hiding root cause failures, I could go on and on.

According to this article in car and driver magazine Subaru, Toyota, and Aisin didn't have a suitable transmission available for the Subaru BRZ/ Toyota 86 at the time so together they decided to use the one out of the Toyota Altezza, a J160, but with a shortened stroke.
The problem with that is with a shortened stroke you get a heavy feel to the shifting and that just wouldn't do.
Five prototypes were built with a focus on the shifting feel to get the 'synchronization" between driver and car.
According to the blueprints, 80% of the J160 parts were changed. All of this was done with less than a year to go until production time.
Sounds like they were too focused on the synchronization between driver and car and not focused enough on the synchronization of the gears.
Crazy
sold me on the syncro set.
Lol Synchrotech/Verus where is my advert check!
Have you tryed wpc or cryo treatment? I just got my gear set back from wpc and should have this put back together by next week and I also am trying the carbon syncros great viedos and great info thanks
I have not personally, but many in my community swear by WPC for gear sets. If you need anything from Verus we are dealers! Let us know!
Have you done any straight-cut gearset rebuilds in the TL70?
Anyone have issues going back to 2nd gear from 3rd when braking hard, like in autocross?
If this is in a FRS/BRZ, Id check your reverse lock out plate adjustment. Otherwise 2nd gear dog teeth are probably chipped.
interesting it is for the 3rd gear because most frs/brz drivers experience problem engaging 2nd gear especially when transmission oil is cold
3rd gear is what I had handy. Yes 2nd gear gets really beat up. I have multiple ZN6 crunch, grind, and blocked out of 2nd
Different oil type is key. Based on experience, OEM synchros want a thicker "type" of oil ie Amsoil Severe Gear vs Motul300 or Amsoil MTG ("thinner" but same 75w90 weight). Carbon synchros in these trans will prefer the "thinner" oil
@@CMAutohaus Thx for the Infos
Ive had issues going into 3rd n 4th. 3rd is like neutral like nothing to engage to. Working on installing carbon synchros
@@guccilaflare500 Good fortune to you big GuuWop!
looking to install the same carbon synchros in my 86, was wondering how bad the install was? Can you do this job using tools a normal tech would have? Like any special tools only a special rebuild shop would have? I'm a newer apprentice at a dealership and we NEVER rebuild or take apart transmissions. Definitely earned a sub!
Only special tool needed is a press. If you are not used to transmission work it is VERY intimidating. Verus has instructions, but I would also photo document everything you do and print the FSM instruction.
@@CMAutohaus Thanks heard you needed a press but wasn't sure. Have only disassembled and reassembled an old audi 4 speed or something lol.
@@vzda123 Yeah Verus' instruction are a very good read before you decide to dig into one. If you are local to the Bay Area I actually have one for sale built ready to go.
@@CMAutohaus Haha sorry im in Canada eh
@@vzda123 Ive shipped to Hawaii before, but I hear Hawaii has a crazy across the border tax
Can you change the snout seal cover with the transmission filled up or does it need to be drained?
Do not need to drain the trans to change the cover
What is an average rebuild cost for a gt86 trans? How much is assembly and disassembly vs frequently replaced parts?
Rebuild cost will depend on shop labor. Very few shops are willing to even rebuild these. Most owners choose to buy a used trans once theirs fails
Hey man, I'm looking to repair my tranny, I have a feeling some of my gears are pretty chopped up at over 100k miles now. Do you know if it's possible to get replacements for the gears themselves? I've looked online without much luck
Yes we get them from the dealership. Aftermarket gear sets are also widely available.
Did that fix your 3rd to 4th grinding issue at high rpm engagement?
Yes the CF Synchros and replacing the worn parts solved the issues.
do they make carbon synchros for the j160 as well?
Do not
Can you make a video on replacing these synchros. I want to change mine out and do a rebuild but I have no idea in what I need to do this. Or is there a guide that I can follow. I’m tired of having to double clutch to prevent grinding.
Verus has a service manual on their website. www.verus-engineering.com/shop/a0121a-carbon-synchro-kit-brz-frs-gt86-388#attr=
Beware. Used trans are dirt cheap and I'd only recommend a rebuild if you are building a performance trans.
I wonder if this will help the transmission handle more power?
Unfortunately not. This trans has many other weakness' including the C-clip and gear strength
Thank you
i got same problem on 2 to 3 and 3 to 4, the last bit hear grind noise, and its only happen when i quick shift gear. nothing wrong with down shift or any other gears. r they going to be covered by the warranty? the dealer going to take part my transmission and then tell me the answer. i only got 35k on my car.
Dealers are not taking transmission apart. If they can verify an issue and your car is under warranty, you will get a new transmission. Make sure to ask to road test with the technician and take video of the problem happening.
@@CMAutohaus they did road test already, the technician took 2mins drove and back. said it is synchro problem right after he parked the car, the service manager said they r going to get me a new transmission, and after 2 months wait without any answer from dealer. i called they again, and they said they going to take the transmission apart and see if that cover by the warranty.
@@ZayJiayuLiu Sounds like you are getting the run around. You need to skip the dealer and call the SOA customer hotline, file a case
@@CMAutohaus thx for the help!!! Ur video really help me to understand the problem on out synchro. I wait and see wut ether going to say after take it apart and going to record the problem before I sent my car in. Thx u sooo much;)
i have a brand new after a week transmission that already clunks into 2nd gear never grind any gears. such a shit transmission.
Do you own a 22+ brz/86?
