Do you wash your legs? Yes, that’s a legitimate question. And prepare to be shocked because there are more people who DON’T wash their legs than you’d realize. Their reasoning is that GRAVITY takes care of the wash. So are the non-washers saving time in the shower or are they just extremely dirty? Let’s turn on the hot water and find out.

Hairdressers child here! Conditioner actually prevents your hair from becoming incredibly oily. Shampoo strips you hair of all its oils, including the natural ones, so before the hair can panic and start producing an abundance of oil to compensate, we use conditioner to bring some form of hydration back to the hair!
Yea! I have pretty bleach damaged/dyed hair and conditioner is the thing that makes my hair soft and normal looking! Funny that matpat had dyed hair and didn’t use conditioner- I wonder how he kept his hair so fluffy 😂
So you're saying I should put conditioner all over my hair and scalp, not only on the tips of the hair?
@@smalachit1571 I think that depends on your hair type, texture and what you’ve processed it with but potentially? I’m no a professional tho- just a maniac who periodically almost burns her hair off with bleach
@@smalachit1571
Conditioner is usually for the hair thats not directly above the scalp. The shampoo is supposed to wash off the grease roots of your hair. But yes, this would usually depend on the type of hair as well. So, I suggest doing more research on your hair length, texture, type and recommended amount of conditioner and stuff.

I dont think I ever really realized how weirdly I shower until I saw this video. I do full 360s in the shower facing all angles because I feel like if I dont constantly look everywhere a demon is gonna come up behind me
sometimes I just accept that a demon is standing behind me while I shower
I'm not alone!
@@ogbogb10z US WEIRD SHOWERERS MUST STAY TOGETHER
Too relatable
Why is this just so true 😭
I am an ADVID conditioner user and at first I was so confused(and a little irritated I admit) about Matt saying that conditioner is useless. But then I remembered I have long curly thick hair that needs to be moisturized and untangled. Meanwhile Matt has (unknown thickness) short straight hair that the natural oil produced by the scalp can reach. So along with his regular trims that he gets removing the dead ends, he also had less factors for hair breakage!
Rhassoul Clay is the best hair and body cleanser and it makes conditioner unnecessary, my hair no longer falls out in clumps and looks better then ever without needed product.
I'm so thorough with how I scrub and rinse myself in the shower. I was surprised that nobody was at least rubbing the soap off under the water with their hands for each individual area. I have no faith in gravity, so I give the water a little extra push that way. But because I'm so thorough with my showers, on a regular day, my showers last anywhere from 15-20 minutes; on a FULL wash day (once a week including deep cleaning my long curly hair, shaving my entire body pit to toe, removing calluses from my feet, etc.) my showers can easily take over an hour and a half.
You're wasting so much water 😮
@@DoorsToHideBehind156 Unfortunate for the water bill. But the water itself will be okay. The city just recycles it anyway. And I get to be squeaky clean 😀 It's a win-win.
Over an HOUR?!?!?!? 🤯
@@Skelepty Unfortunately yes. Wish I didn't have to, but I can't find a quicker way to do it. Just my hair alone takes about 40-50 minutes, and I shave my body and file my foot calluses down while I let the shampoo sit on my scalp (dermatologist's orders, I'm not supposed to wash it off right away, gotta rinse after 5 minutes). I also have to triple wash my hair to get rid of buildup from my hair products, because it's impossible to have nice curly hair without a ton of leave-in products in it. Oh lord and it tangles itself immediately after I stop combing it so I gotta keep combing and combing... showering is just so messy until the hair portion is complete, then it's smooth sailing.
@@AmandaNavarroI also have the „Everything-Shower“ once a week. :) But I always stop the water flow when scrubbing, massaging shampoo in, leaving conditioner, shaving etc. I only use it, when I actually need to rinse out the shampoo or something.
Maybe this helps you, and you can integrate it in your routine. ✨

Thing is, imagine how many of those women that said they don't wash DO shave. Hello from Spain!
Idk if this is more common here in Europe or if I'm just weird, but I usually just use the little handheld showerhead (idk how it's called in English); in fact, in my mother's home there isn't one of those that are set in the wall, so you had to use the handheld one. As for other showering info, male, double shampoo, no conditiones, my shower gel is liquid so idk what I'd do with a bar of soap, definitely wash my legs (and my feet, until they feel nice and soft, not harsh).
Nice video, btw!, and sry for my English.
Same here! I’m surprised to hear most shower heads are fixed in place
A note for the future hair washing episode. Thicker hair types use different kinds of conditioners. As a black woman with long, dry hair, I use a leave in conditioner to detangle and contain the remaining natural oils on my hair. So I don't really know how conditioners that wash out work since all of mine are products that are applied after the shower.
Thanks for commenting this. I was looking for someone with a similar story. I am mixed black girl with a similar issue. Conditioner is a must in my routine.
as a person of unknown race with very very oily hair, i think conditioner is bad for my hair
The instructions on conditioners that wash out are usually along the lines of "Apply to clean towel dry / moist hair. Leave for 5-15 minutes befofe washing off". What i do (and have noticed many others do as well) is to just squeese most of the water out before using conditioner instead of using a towel in the middle of showering.
@@Lohi42 I had no clue you were supposed to do thar

1:12 As a Floridian, I can confirm that that's THE news station for Florida
One thing that bothers me about this is it was not confirmed whether the coffee grounds dried on their legs before washing. If it's wet it's way easier to rinse away. And soap becomes less impactful
Also. It's fair and well that the dirt is washed off. What about the bacteria on your skin?
The handwashing guidelines are like way more involved than the average person's washing techniques and that's been shown to leave microorganisms on your skin.
This is the question I was wondering. Sure it gets rid of wet, loose, visible debris. But what about bacteria?
YES
They also mentioned the slightly oily texture on the unwashed leg, which sounds like is the usual invisible dirt and grime that we aim to wash off? If it's still grimy then it's not washed
It's also not simply coffee grounds. It's a coffee shower scrub. It's literally intended to rinse off with water alone, the slight oily feeling left behind is to add moisture to the skin.
I can shower without looking looking visibly dirty, but if you look at the water that's getting rinsed off, that's dirtier than my skin looked. I want a bacteria sample swab and a black light test to see what was ACTUALLY left behind.
Conditioner is how I untangle my hair without immense pain. So, I’d say it’s pretty useful.
Same :D
Mood
Add that squeak!
Yeah like, of course he doesn't understand conditioner. He probably never gets tangles in his hair lol
Easier to untangle, i can go two days without washing my hair before it gets impossibly greasy, and it feels fluffy. Conditioners are nice
I’d love to be on team theorists, seems like they have so much fun!
Head hair length determines once or twice shampooing and need for conditioner
My family doc actually recommended gravity washing when I was a kid because I had eczema on my legs. Turns out scrubbing and stripping off too much of your oils really irritates your skin if it's sensitive 🤷♀
It def does! I have a friend who has eczema and they have to be very careful when they shower/bathe because mechanical exfoliation (scrubbing) does just that! they also have to be very careful with products too.
Yeah stripping your skin is awful for it. You're also losing its barrier against outside bacteria, AND stripping it of the bacteria apart of you that aid in healing stuff like acne.
I also have eczema. On my legs it's mostly around my knees and on my left thigh.
Y'all should do a series of hair care theories. Of course Mat doesn't use conditioner, he has short hair. My hair is very long, and the only way to keep the ends from drying out is by using conditioner on the hair that's bellow the ears, letting it sit for a while before lightly washing out the excess. That being said, I also trained my hair to only need to be washed every 10-ish days as long as i don't put extra product in it. It saves me a whole lot of shampoo and conditioner, especially compared to when i washed it every other day.
I have long hair and I never use conditioner and I need to wash like 2 times a week in winter, 5-7 times in summer
They need to include the "3 in 1" shampoo/body wash/conditioners.
There is SO much misinformation surrounding shampoo and its ingredients. It would be interesting to get some hard facts about it. 🤔
Same, but I'm only to 3-5 days
I would love a series of episodes on haircare!
I married a hairstylist who specializes in fantasy hair color, and now my hair is no longer its natural color. It is about shoulder length and to keep it clean I need to shampoo it (single scrub) about every-other day. Since it is bleached, I have to condition it daily, or it gets super dry. I was warned that hair stripped of oil leads to split end and breakages.
When my hair was short and natural, I could shampoo daily and get away with conditioning once a week.
Maybe an episode on conditioner and/or beard oil?
the one thing i need to point out is that lose clothing like this is definitely gonna make it harder to wash of by just passively letting water drip down. Like these shorts might be YT friendly, but they are the equivalent to a raincoat for your legs.
I’ve watched your game channel for years, never knew you had more!
Something to note @thestyletheorists is that you can also track dirt with not just dirt, but also by using an ultraviolet compound. This means that it would show exactly what would have come off or not. We did this with our cooking class to show what washing hands and scrubbing does. Even though you rinsed it off, you could see how much germs/bacteria were left with an ultraviolet light. The difference will be night and day with this type of testing and the results will be drastic.
I honestly thought that they were going to do it that way. Hopefully they can do a retest.
Yeah, sounds more effective
That ultraviolet compound is how I was taught infection control and handwashing at a health practitioner level
Yes, this was a poorly done theory imo
This is exactly what I was thinking. Just because it looks clean, doesn't mean it is
What surprised me most was the total absence of any _mention_ of detachable shower-heads. Also, my routine involves turning the water off during the soap/shampoo application, and only turning it on for the rinsing; presumably, that would make a fairly major difference as well.
(And if anyone's collecting data: for me, it's two rounds of soap (YES to manually washing legs), two rounds of shampoo, one round of conditioner, one round of facial cleanser; and one rinse in between each step, including between repeats and at the beginning and end.)
Your comment asked the very question I had when finishing this video, your shower habits describe mine perfectly, and your username describes my bathroom... I am now convinced my shower has attained sentience and a connection to wifi
@@GoldenVoiceAudioChocolateSame lol
Same bro I have those they are sooooo efficient. NO WHERE WOULD BE UNCLEAN.
My washing habits is similar to yours:
1. Wash my hair twice to wash away dandruff and oil
2. Once I finish washing my hair, get out of the shower while still on and soap my body, chest to feet. ( all the way to feet, right under)
3. Back in the shower and wash away the soap
I use the basics of soap and anti-dandruff shampoo.
Maybe hopefully they can revisit this a some later point with the variations of if say you had a detachable shower-head and if that would be the ideal way to get your legs washed, without actually scrubbing them as you can just hose them down, especially with some that can switch streams from a normal pressure to a jet like pressure.
Could be both because I don't do it often butI do sometimes if I even remember. 1:36

Ayo chill MatPat 😭😭😭
I'm outside in my garden a lot when it's summer. When I only wear shorts, earth, dirt and sand really gets in the pores and I have to scrub my legs properly to get them back to their original color. So gravity showers would not work. Also, look clean ain't the same as clean. I want to point out also, that I have a shower that has a detachable shower head on a house because I don't believe it's much harder to get clean when the water just comes from above.
Mat finding out he needs to double check his plumbing throughout his house is my favorite part of this episode

I would like a bacteria test.
Licensed cosmetologist here! Conditioner is mostly for those with long hair and is really only ment to be applied to the end and NOT the roots. Hence forth mat pat is fine for not Conditioning his hair is short and likely the natural oils Condition it for him
Also I don't feel like double washing does anything that sounds like it would just strip the hair but that's also completely depends on how often you wash your hair
As a sometimes double washer, I tend to base it off of how oily my hair is when I start and how much effort I want to put into sudsing it. Sometimes it's easier to just do a half-hearted scrub, rinse, and then go back in
yeah, double wash totally depends on how oily your hair is. Normally I just shampoo once, but after work I have to wash twice because wearing a cap and sweating for six hours tends to make my hair grimy as hell.
I only use conditioner. I follow the curly girl method. No silicones so no shampoo is necessary.
It also depends on how thoroughly you shampoo your hair. If you don't tip your head back and GET under the roots, you might need to do it twice to get it clean
I double wash if I have been using hair spray or dry shampoo beforehand, so the first wash would lift up the product and second one would clean the hair properly.

I feel like the important thing with a video like that would be to include different hair types because curly and kinky hair cannot get as naturally oiled as straight hair due to the hair follicles having a more oval shape. With my curly hair, I have to use a gentle shampoo mostly on my roots because my hair is already naturally dry. Then I need conditioner to lock in the moisture my hair has from the shower water.

Okay, another important question I'd love to see answered on here is how _often_ your should shower. You talked about how some soaps cling too well and remove all the oils from your skin, but your skin does still need some oils. This is where the theory that it's healthier to _not_ shower every day comes into play. Personally, I try to shower only every other day (though I might rince down if I got particularly sweaty that day) and find that my skin feels smoother and healthier than back when I did shower every day, but I'm also well aware that that is anecdotal and could just be placebo/confirmation bias.
Depends on the place you live. If you live near the beach or some place warmer. Yeah, you should shower daily
It may depend on the climate/weather. If you live in the tropics, you will at least shower once a day. I usually shower twice, once in the morning to get rid of the sweat from the night's heat. And another shower in the evening to get rid of the sweat and grime from the day's outing.
@@ateh6150 Huh, my friend says I should shower like that but we aren't in an overly hot locale currently. Perhaps he grew up somewhere warmer than I did, or he's a lot more concerned about keeping clean than I am.
My brother actually developed a skin condition from showering too often. He's in a physical, sometimes messy job, so he'd have to scrub down thoroughly with soap after every shift. At first we thought he'd developed eczema, it was so bad - especially on his legs! But the doctor just prescribed a cream for the initial recovery of his damaged skin, then had him switch to a gentler soap and told him to moisturize.
I would definitely like to know this one for sure, or at the very least, how often to shower with soap. I watched a show called Adam Ruins Everything that touched on this but didn't give a clear formulated system for how often to use soap.
I don’t want a slight difference, I want my leg completely clean
Thank you! LOL
My rule of thumb: if hair can grow there, then it needs scrubbing to get clean.
@Stooms Counter, why do you need your legs laboratory sanitary levels of clean? Are you planning on sticking them where legs do not belong or are you planning on sticking other things in leg territory where they clearly do not belong? You ask what the point is of having partially clean legs, but there must be an actual justifiable objective reason to have perfectly clean legs as well.

My dermatologist actually recommended NOT specifically fully-washing your legs because of excess drying. Rather, you do some mechanical scrubbing to get off the dead skin, but you don't _add_ any more soap than is already on your body from hair and the pits-and-parts. You don't want to totally strip the oils from your skin.

What about water pressure? That second shower looked like it had poor water pressure compared to the first one. Just a factor to consider
Agreed
I know, the final summary I was like >:o it is obvious the water pressure makes a massive difference! It's like imagine washing the mud off a car with a spray bottle vs a jet, water pressure is probably the most important factor in the video!!
Agreed, water pressure is more relevant than the shower head direction. Just wash a dish and this is obvious.
Though I actually wonder about other methods too. The hose shower, with no soap available. Tub methods, without any shower available.
Style theory was not very thorough with this topic, though, considering they're watching each other in the shower I don't really blame them for that.

10:36 honestly as a guy with long hair I will say the double wash is really helpful if you have longer hair especially if you have one for the roots and one for the ends of your hair
I really appreciated Steph's explanation of soap and am glad she got a larger feature in the episode!

14:01 why is he shaking like that- he looks cold
I used to not wash my legs, and I work a pretty labor intensive job, and I ended up developing some fungal issues because I had been neglecting them after I'd been sweating in my socks for several hours. I'm pretty careful to wash my legs and especially my feet and soles while showering, and I haven't had any issues of that type again since I started doing that. So I would like to add that even if it does seem to work, you may still want to wash your legs depending on your lifestyle and habits.
Steph just taught me chemistry better than my chemistry teacher ever did 😅
Edit: Hi Sam!! :D
Who is sam
Exactly, my science teacher doesn’t ever teach me these
@John Wick 🅥 bot, you just tried to make it realistic
@complete video here *fard*
Maybe because it’s simplified so even a child could understand, still not enough for your chemistry class lol
But what happened to the bacteriacheck?
I had to go to shower but now I have an urge to see this video so that I don't die
I LOVE the interactions between everyone on Team Theorist. I love when the rest of the crew end up on camera and you get to experience everyone's personalities when they are together. I hope we get more episodes like this in the future.
When used properly, Conditioner actually slows down oil build up since it works for your scapl instead, meaning your body doesn't have to overproduce in order to keep your head hydrated. That is ESPECIALLY true for my coily/kinky hair types (aka largely black) since it takes longer for the natural oils to travel down our strands, so conditioning is a MUST for soft, hydrated and manageable hair for everyone ☺🚿
Agreed. My hair is the opposite, fairly straight and incredibly fine. If I don't condition it gets brittle and looks like straw/dry grass
@@Zyra19 my hair is the exact same especially since I bleach and dye it often 😅
No conditioner would be horrible for my hair
Scalp oil production is not based on an on-demand basis. It's a constant production.
“Scapl”
Most conditioners are not supposed to use on your scalp unless it is labelled to use on scalp…
wow i guess my legs have been dirty my whole life because i always wash my legs :(
would cold and hot water not have different variables? pores open and close depending on heat so would that not affect the cleaning process? It would be cool to see a whole video on showers and the most efficient and best way to take a shower. But thats just an thought, a shower thought!
I expected Matpat to use Glo germ powder for the test. Its the powder stuff that glow in UV light, used for test how clean your handwashing are. When he used coffee ground, I was like "Um, OK?" and still sceptical in the result though.
I agree, I did this in high school. We were taught that friction helps get rid of germs and dirt. It seems they only took into account the visible aspect and the feel to determine if it’s clean or not. I’m still scrubbing my legs lol
Yeah I don’t know why they did it this way it’s not really a show of cleanliness just will dirt fall if water hits it lol
He also has too small a sample size. Sitting showers, handheld showers, and sponge baths are also in need of testing as well
Seriously. How are we just ignoring germs like that isn’t most of the reason we wash ourselves?
Maybe it's just the videos I've watched, but most of the theory videos doing experiments tend to have... less-than-rigorous testing methods. I get it, the channels are mostly for fun, they have a small team, etc., but in the end most of their testing barely rises to the level of a case study in terms of evidence for or against certain hypotheses. They eliminate a handful of factors, but ignore many other (sometimes very obvious) explanations or confounding factors. If the proof is in the pudding, then these videos might qualify as the milk, or the flavoring, but definitely not the whole shebang.
Buuuuuuut they're amusing, and they offer something to consider, so I keep watching anyways. After all, there's still plenty of value in what they do, so I try to take it for what it is.
I'd like to see Matpat discuss if backpacks are really so risky for causing back issues in teens. Speaking as someone who had scoliosis blamed on my 😢 curious what science says.
But yeah, i wash mine as a habit, since i had surgery on mine just in case i need emergency surgery on them, to limit infection risk.
that would actually be an amazing theory!
Oooooo yes! I've wondered about this.
@Ben that’s actually really smart!!
I also got back pain from my backpack. I am so glad that most schools don't use textbooks anymore because they can just give you the digital version, which is way lighter. It's like a weight been lifted off my shoulders
It's absolutely a cause for back pain, especially the lower you wear your backpack, which many kids did when I was in school because that was the cool look.
Honestly, I shouldn't be surprised that now they're in showers on camera.
I find my hair matts and dries out faster when I don't use conditioner, but that just proves the whole 'everyone needs different solutions' thing
As someone with curly hair, Matpat not using conditioner is a personal attack 😤
Agreed I was gonna say the same thing
Indeed
I just have long hair and HOW DO YOU NOT USE CONDITIONER
@@daboi7461 r u okay u need to use conditioner if not your hair gets nasty and greasy
i too have curly hair but i don't use conditioner am i missing somthing?
10:53 I hope Style Theory does a theory on African American or different textured hair, because this is definitely a crime for anyone without straight hair. Sometimes I even condition before shampooing, and then condition again afterward
Right? My hair is only wavy, and my hair is HORRENDOUS without conditioner.
@@rachelhansen2417 I know right!?!!
Absolutely! This! I was literally thinking, wow, Matthew, thanks for telling us your hair is dry. But then I remembered his hair is short and straight, which will be a significant difference from curly, coiling, kinky hair.
Right? I have hair that isn't even THAT curly and I still am reliant on conditioner. My hair would not be a pretty sight without it.
I love this channel, but MatPat et al sometimes miss the mark on diversity. I don't have a lot of confidence that they could respectfully present it without (unintentional) offense. There are plenty resources on Black hair out there.
So no wash cloth?
Idk if this is like a European thing but I actually only have a showerhead attached to the bathtub. It's not a static traditional showerhead I actually have to hold it in my hand while showering or lay it down into the tub while showering. It's annoying sometimes but it's actually much quicker then the rainfall shower my aunt has. I can get in and out the shower in like five minutes if I really wanna be quick.
There's one type of shower test im surprised you didn't do, considering I'm pretty sure I saw you had it available to you in your master shower: The hand-held shower head. For example, I don't "wash my legs," but I do, however, use my hand-held shower head to rinse off all the suds that accumulated on my legs with point blank accuracy. I'm sure the difference with that and the added water pressure, that also does a great job cleaning as well.
But is it still oily? If so, consider “washing your legs”
I thought that too! I have the hand held shower head, and though I don't soap down my legs, I rinse them with water. Would love to see the results of that.
This for sure. And thoroughly too. Like there's nothing worse than rinsing your legs directly for a solid 10 minutes, only for new suds to form between them the second you take 2 steps out of the shower.
Someone already commented this, but apparently handheld shower head is much rarer in USA than that of Europe
I think Stephanie will shine a lot in this theory channel.
Yess! She’s so informative too!
4:06 is this girl a scientist?
So are we not adding body wash to the mix? Or washcloths?? Those lil green scrubbers that turn your skin red??? I feel as if this experiment has so many more variables that weren’t fully taken into consideration.
I don’t think I’ve ever just used a bar of soap without something that holds the suds, in order to spread them over an area before rinsing and starting a new section.
Other variables. Water pressure, smaller molecular things to wash off such as grass stains, blood from cuts, maybe a spilled drink, ph level of the water, bar soap vs body wash, a quick rub with your hand instead of scrub with something like a wash cloth, height of participants, distance from shower head to initial contact point of participant
and handheld showerhead, and don’t forget better data collection, fluorescent oily substance to see how well oil gets washed off, can check under black light, and quantifying results
@@thetafritz9868 as well as different head settings
Another BIG and I mean BIG factor that they didn't test is that their "dirt" was quite fresh and rather moisture rich itself. Do this same test after someone's been doing something like roadwork or ripping up a garden for 10 hours and a lot of that dirt and filth is going to be caked on and is not going to come off with a casual rinse.
20:19 “gravity can in fact work” -matpat 2023
This acrually made me want to take a shower when i was too lazy, lol. 😂
ooh I'm looking forward to the double wash episode, as a person with long hair anything extra helps and I don't know anyone online I'd rather put my bias at stake for. I'd also love an episode diving into the different kinds of soap and skin products, bar soap vs body wash, hair treatments vs all in one sorta deal
It's a necessity for someone whose hair tends to curl like mine as well.
Yeah, I have long thick hair too, and I always double wash. The way Steph described it was accurate. The first wash never feels fully clean. Second wash is extra sudsy, and I use the excess to wash my body.
E
I hope they do another episode on hard vs soft water showers. If I’m traveling and washing myself with hard water I don’t feel like the soap has left my skin. Cool channel!
Huh I wonder what type my dorm has…. I bet it’s not great
@@ravenpotter3 if the water feels slimy its soft if it causes yellowing on the tub its hard
@@cheezecakegaming8613are you in 10 th grade?
Tf is soft and hard water ?
well, that's interesting. I had the opposite feeling, at first I had trouble showering while on the trip, as it felt like I still had shampoo in my hair 😅 I've heard soft water is better for hair and whatever, but it just makes me feel slippery xD
I actually learned something, normally in school I would zone out whole class and learn nothing so i thank you for teaching us because i actually learned.(power of listening).
