This is the best kind of metal - there is so much expression and emotion in the music, it's brilliantly composed and expertly delivered. It's not just NOISE. Mastodon are fucking geniuses.
him and Jerry Cantrell are both amazing at coming up with musically brilliant solos that aren't necessarily difficult to learn technically, but require a very good sense of music to pull off properly
@@hyperstimmed Cantrell is a god, one of the best songwriters to ever live. Brilliant guitarist with out needing to shred a bunch either, dimebag even mentioned back in the day it was crazy how much emotion Jerry could get out of his guitar and that’s a lot cooler than just shredding. Cantrell is one of the best to ever do it, lastly he hes got the Goat tone in my book. Anyway Brent is the fuckin man too, fantastic guitarist and awesome musician, his solo on roots remain is one of my favorite ever, also shout out bill guy is a fantastic rhythm guitarist and a masterful riff writer.
I wish I could see them in this era. Leviathan + blood mountain are my fav mastodon records. Didn't get into mastodon until 2009ish though and that was the first time i saw them. Crack the skye just came out so they mostly played that. Saw them with BTBAM though so that was cool
I'm almost positive this was an encore, but still...to even hear this live is mind boggling. Made my life worth while when I saw them several years ago.
This was the peak of Mastodon, anyone who was here at these leviathan tour shows I envy so fucking much. If there was a time machine I would take it back to these days.
This song after the first time I heard it as a teen is still my favorite today, still gives me chills..I can never get enough. Amazing video-thanks for posting.
Love watching performances of this song from the earlier tours, thanks for the upload. It's so raw and yet so polished, so rockin and proggy at the same time like ooooo ma gawd perfection
Hey man thanks for posting this here I hadn't added this show to youtube yet but looks and sounds great here. Just a heads up the date was 12/7/2005 not on the 12th. Check my channel for more Mastodon masters.
This is a fantastic song and a great instrumental performance. To be real though, these guys used to be pretty shitty live vocalists. It's good to know they've since cleaned that final aspect up, because it was about the only thing this band could possibly have left you wanting.
well they opened the leviathan tour with Hearts Alive so they did open with it but this seems like its around the blood mountain era by the date so you're probably right this probably was the encore
Song sounds great but the vocals are uh...hmmm. Its like how I would sound if I tried to get on stage and scream. Cuz I don't know how to. Troy sounds good though! Maybe he should've covered the chorus.
Man, these guys were really great around this era. Now the vocals are all clean and boring and they’ve just gotten too noodley. This song proves that longer song structures and elements of prog were always there, but you can do that AND bring the heavy. I just think their stuff now is too cleaned up and slick. Back then there was an edge that they just don’t have anymore.
They as people aren't as angry anymore, so they don't really make heavy music which sucks because they have the ultimate ability to be heavier than any other band. Except the great High on Fire they are equal with them.
@JHM123 how can any person with at least a double digit IQ conjecture that the song they like most is the best song written in the history of metal? At least you should realise that keeping quiet is the best way to eschew people from finding out how many grey cells you have. (no offence to Mastodon here)
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Even if it’s an amazingly fucking stupid opinion. I mean, this is a great jam. Undoubtedly Mastodon’s best song but if I had to name the greatest metal song of all time I’d have to go with it’s very origins: “Black Sabbath” by Black Sabbath from the album Black Sabbath. It’s entirety possible that they perfected it right out of the gate. Other contenders: “Slaughter of the Soul” by At the Gates “South of Heaven” by Slayer Or since dude is obviously all about the epics...”Dopesmoker” by Sleep.
one of the greatest songs ever, i refuse to believe it was created by mere mortals
Its definitely a sell your soul to the devil kinda song...
@@Oborowatabinostk you just have to do plenty of Psychedelics and loads of guitar practice
This and seabeast are amazing, the outro’s are so heavy!
You just need to read Moby Dick
at least 10 years ahead their time.
no one ever caught up to them, timless my dude
this song is absolutely mind blowing. one of my favorite songs ever
This is the best kind of metal - there is so much expression and emotion in the music, it's brilliantly composed and expertly delivered. It's not just NOISE. Mastodon are fucking geniuses.
simply radical
Brent is one of the most under rated guitarist. He’s all feel. This solo and “The Hunter” is pure example.
him and Jerry Cantrell are both amazing at coming up with musically brilliant solos that aren't necessarily difficult to learn technically, but require a very good sense of music to pull off properly

This solo is welding the fury of the gods
Damn those last 3 minutes are intense
This and seabeast
The ending riff is one of the greatest in all of metal
Fucking amazing. I love how Brent gets in some extra solo instead of just the steady 2 minute outro riff😂
Thanks for posting this dude. And on a side note...it takes balls to OPEN your show with the best song written in the history of metal.
I just hope to see them one day where they actually play this. 3 times and counting, not yet.
Lmao Troy almost smashing his bass at the end
Troy almost smashed Brent at the end
no cell phones everywhere fuck yeah!!!!!
troy is playing his ass off. I remember his finger picking being so intense.
IS that why he keeps checking to see if his ass is still there?
man they are singing the fuck out of this. love it all
The end of this video is so great because Troy is just headbanging away because he knows they are KILLING IT!
The really, RREEAALLLLYY need to bring this song back
I'm from the future, they did
The fucking solo...
Dear God I love this whole song, but the chills I get from 11:00 minutes to the end are unbelievable! Easily my favorite song of all time, perfection!
one of their best songs.which is to say a lot. outstanding
The last few minutes of this song make me want to go to war barehanded
just saw them last thursday for their 20th anniversary... them playing this was unreal
Just saw it last night! Knew I was watching something special
Damn and they OPENED with this. Amazing

Rusty Shackleford understandable
LOL that was the hardest I've laughed in a long time, DANKE
You must go to see Gojira too
@@ligma6496 I was supposed to see gojira w/ deftones live this coming August but they postponed the tour for almost a whole year 😥
@@ext93 that's sucks. fucking corona
March 2019 and still going strong.
These Guys are so DAMM COOOOOL
I remember hearing this as a teen. Totally changed my taste!
This song gives me purpose
One of the best songs ever heard. 14 minutes is not enough to describe it.
For being 16 years old, this video is freakin' amazing!
Brent smiling 01:57 'You're damn right my face is on my t-shirt'
One of the greatest bands of all time.
Although they have gotten more refined and precise, there early years aggression was unmatched.
I wish I could see them in this era. Leviathan + blood mountain are my fav mastodon records. Didn't get into mastodon until 2009ish though and that was the first time i saw them. Crack the skye just came out so they mostly played that. Saw them with BTBAM though so that was cool
This song could beat Covid-19
Kick it's bloody arse...
agreed
99.997 % of songs could
great video and one of the greatest metal songs from start to finish! Mastodon creates some of the best guitar riffs on the planet!!!!
I revisit this performance constantly, I can not begin to express my thanks at uploading this!
I'm almost positive this was an encore, but still...to even hear this live is mind boggling. Made my life worth while when I saw them several years ago.
They opened with Hearts a lot back then
Hipnotic masterpiece .! I think they are a real fucking wizards .!!!!
THE UNIVERSE CHRASHES TOGETHER IN MY HEAD !!!!
such an underrated mastodon tune!
this video is a gem, thank god this was uploaded for everyone to enjoy.
This song is truly a masterpiece.

brilliant guys... but imagine going on an acid trip on their show and just hear their lyrics and see the drug work its magic :/
You would fully ascend to the higher echelons of consciousness
This is perfection
FUCKING COOL AND AWESOME !!!!
So happy i saw them play this song live in 2014
This song after the first time I heard it as a teen is still my favorite today, still gives me chills..I can never get enough. Amazing video-thanks for posting.
Masterpiece. Simple as that
The last half part is fucking insane. Those guys are geniuses
This looks unbelieavable good for 2005. If it wasn't for beardless Troy I wouldnt believe it
I goddamn love this song
This is beyond awesome.
These guys where elite before they even knew it.
The level of precision is ridiculous, and this was 2006.
Love watching performances of this song from the earlier tours, thanks for the upload. It's so raw and yet so polished, so rockin and proggy at the same time like ooooo ma gawd perfection
Speechless!!! Just amazing!! Thank you!!
FUCKING EPIC!!!!!!!!
Dude that drummer is fuckin phenomenal. So much with so little. Everyone else is brilliant too. But damn.
Time and space, all alone, it can be a lonely place... There it goes, open up... I can’t stand, I can’t breathe...
this is a masterpiece. thanx for upload, great to see it done in the raw.
Fucking Brilliant Forever

Behold the biggest, best and most important heavy metal band in the world!
This is a fantastic song and a great instrumental performance. To be real though, these guys used to be pretty shitty live vocalists. It's good to know they've since cleaned that final aspect up, because it was about the only thing this band could possibly have left you wanting.
Mike GC agree. Vocals are really poor here.
at 4.05 Troy does an epic metal dribble from the mouth ahahaha! \m/
parts of this song sound like metallica's the call of ktulu
Right, two minutes in, sounds like Metallica. I always thought it was a tribute.
2 words - FUCKING PERFECT!!
Joder, es arte 🚬
I was hoping on a good close up on Brann Dailor destroying those drums throughout this song
From 11:33 onward it's just Brent making sweet love to that guitar.
Yay I was there, thx for uploading :)
hearts alive gives me a heart attack
AMB488 how ironic
What amp is brent using? Looks like a jcm 800 but all models i could find had either 2-4 inputs. Both of his only have one input.
Could well be a JCM 800 - the 2210 only has one input.
Also, Brent literally looks like the cartoon on his shirt.

you posted this on my birthday, how did you know?
03:05 "My Package and I salute you"
Am I the only one noticing Bill's fingers on his right hand? At the beginning, I could have swore dude had 6 fingers. 😂 dude has sausages
Troy bass is on?
you can hear hints of it :D
Bad quality video sadly.
Good enough to enjoy for me tho.
branns white pants ftw!!!
Well that's it. I've seen the best song ever recorded live. Guess I can quit youtube now.
who's that on Hinds shirt? AHAB?
@DavidDecapitation nah i was listening to their new song rebel of babylon.
Brann's wearing a Master Of Puppets tshirt xD
favorite song by mastodon..... well maybe MAYBE passed up by march of the fire ants.... or elephant man....FUCK ITS ALL GOOD
Bill man just .......
Who is this Lars you speak of?
Song sounds great but the vocals are uh...hmmm. Its like how I would sound if I tried to get on stage and scream. Cuz I don't know how to. Troy sounds good though! Maybe he should've covered the chorus.
Brent rips. He sounds like your average man that's just been stabbed in the intestines. Guttural and raw.
@DavidDecapitation i got my hopes up.. major letdown...
Besides the guitarists vocals (I know some people like Brent's live vocals but I don't), this is just incredible. One of my favourite songs.
Do I hear black metal in this?
I mean mastodon are just a big mix of a ton of influences so I wouldn't be surprised
Where exactly do you hear black metal I’m curious? (not sarcasm)
Yes black metal and Lynyrd Skynyrd
@DeadlyDictator You must not have been listening to the Justice or Ride the Lightning albums, because the drumming there was phenomenal.
@DuringCreation I'm about to hit three of them... at the same time.
Did Troy actually drool at 4:04?
I'm surprised he didn't spouts some water like a bloody whale, after that performance
Fucking Berserk!
Viking metal at its finest!
Uh wot
Shrums r the hell of a drug
