Thank you so much for uploading this Video. Great work! And a very good tutorial. I have made a few leather sheaths for knives, now (with your friendly help) i will try to make a pancake holster for a S&W J frame. Have a nice and peaceful Christmas, best wishes from Germany, Frank
Great job . I like how you glued 2 - 3 oz to the back of 5 - 6 oz instead of just using 6 - 9 oz like I see other people do. Makes the inside smooth so it don't rub the finish off the gun.
Wow! I just started making kydex holsters for myself but the thumbnail of this vid caught my attention because of how beautiful that holster looked. I am intrigued at how artistic you can be with leather while at the same time this does not seem to be above me skill level. I will be looking into leather working tools and supplies now! Excellent work! By the way, I didn't realize gun ownership was allowed in Hong Kong. Keep up the good work my friend!
Really nice work. Nice construction & saddle stitch. Instead of mink oil & the shoe cream, have you considered using Aussie? A lot of saddle makers use that with great results due to the leather conditioners & beeswax formula. Just an idea you might find worth looking into.
It is a decent job. Maybe a little more explaining what you are doing. Is that Barge cement? And the most important thing, where did you get the pattern to begin with?I always put the gun in a plastic bag rather than in the wet holster before boning.
Anytime I had to punch a Hole in some leather, such as adding an extra Hole on a Belt - I heated up an Awl on top of our Gas Kitchen Stove Top until it was turning all Red and Blue and then Pushed it thru the leather belt to Burn a Hole right thru it. Nice Burnt leather smell that way.
mx5ish belt slots are to big. Only need to be size of belt. 1.5 inches usually. To much oil it will soften as it soaks in. Usually Resoline or Mop and Glow. It is water resistant and high gloss. Boning is easier if not so wet. But not a bad go as I don't think holsters are his norm.
Very nice holster...learn a lot from your video! Just starting crafting leather. Your style is easier I think than others. However, I want to include oil based dye...would you dye your leather as a final step like in your video - or after the glue of both pieces before stiching? Thanks for sharing, Alex
Looks great, I like the "old school" look of that color. Have you ever seen any of the videos that Hank Strange did with Samuel Andrews Leather? Really awesome vids, and he uses very similar techniques. I learned a lot from his videos and now from yours. Keep it up brother, peace
Great looking holster! How long did you let the leather soak before you formed it? I'm going to try making me one here pretty quick. Looks like you didn't use to many tools, will help keep the cost down. Thanks!
+Bobshouse Thank you! the leather was only soaked for 10 seconds.Yep, not many tools were used, no fancy stuff, pretty straight forward and easy to do. the only catch is where you put the stitching line for better retention to the gun, not too tight and not too loose. Happy stitching!!!
Really beautiful job. I am a hobby leatherworker and have not tried a pancake holster. I will now. I had a question. What weight leather did you use for the lining and for the holster itself. Also, any thoughts about wrapping the gun with plastic wrap to protect it when wet-forming the holster. Thanks for posting this video!
+pjculbertson55 Thank you very much! The leather was something from 4 to 5 oz. the outside was 2mm thick, and the inside was about 1.5mm thick. I have seen someone wrap the pistol with a plastic wrap, and I have seen someone soak every thing with WD-40... I guess everyone are doing it differently. Best regards.
Nice work! May i ask that when you were giving the shape of the gun on the leather, is that water you were using? And how long have you wait until the next step? Thanks!
Nice holster! I’ve started dabbling in leather work and I would like to start making holsters like this. Did you make the pattern on your own? I’m looking for a basic pattern like this to give me a starting point.
+frankgon4 If you mean the stitching hole, that was an stitching awl! For the belt loop, that was a hole puncher, and a chisel! Yes, I used warm water!!!
This guy is an expert with all the fancy leather working tools. it is a nice video but you can't expect the average Joe to do something like this. it would be cheaper and better to order a Holster from a Holster Manufacturer on-line or purchase one at a Gun Shop.
44357514 his only "fancy" tool was an edger. They can be had for like $5. Any awl will work diamond shaped best for the angled saddle stitch. Again that tool can be had for $5.
People watch a video like this one because they want to know how its done and want to make their own. That's why you are here in the first place. Say what you want but you know it.
They were not killed for the mink oil. The mink oil is a by product. The minks were killed for their fur. That being the case it is good to use as much of the animal as we can. I don't condone killing of animals for their furs. There was a time this was necessary but that is no longer the case. But your idea that the minks are killed for the oil is misguided.
Hey David, I do have a video about making pattern: ruclips.net/video/MQ43KXNdHD8/видео.html and some of my other videos also mentioned something about patterns, please check them out if you have time. It might not be a big help, but hopefully you will find something useful!!! Happy stitching!! and Merry Christmas!!!
I admire the skill and talent that you put into building this holster. It's a real pleasure to watch an artist at work.
Thank you very much!!!
Excellent super beautiful craftsmanship...!!! Great job ...!!!👌🏼👍🏼
Thank you very much!
Such skillful craftsmanship right here. Well done, sir.
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! I love your videos and your work! Thank you!
I've got a Model 15 and a trio of 686 revolvers. I think I may try this for my first project. Very nice!
Well done Sir, beautiful hand craftsmanship.
Many many thanks
I had my doubts when you first started out but it really turned out nice. Good job!

Great work!!! Congrats from Brazil!
Thank you very much!
Wow... what an awesome holster! Love the color!
Hi Gary
I’ve watched this twice now and it’s inspired me enough to make a holster and I don’t have a pistol!😀
Thanks for taking me in a new direction!
Thanks again David!!! we can make holsters for many different things, the concept is the same!!!
You make it look easy, but it seems straight forward enough that I might try to make one. First couple would probably be quite ugly. Haha.
Love your work, I was curious how this was done. I have tried kydex hybrid holsters and just find leather so much better.
Absolutely beautiful...
Thank you. Very interesting and answered a few leather works questions for me.
Thank you very much!!!
WOW.... That was COOL! thank you my friend!
Amazing... You Sir, have the patience of Jobe! "Well Done"
Thank you very much!!!
My compliments on your astoundingly beautiful work and your artistic craftsmanship. Absolutely superb. 👍
+Steven Mayes Thank you very much!!!
Fantastic craftsmanship sir! Your video was fun and interesting, gives one more appreciation for the crafting of fine leather-cheers!
Thank you very much!!!
Very cool video. Amazing piece of leather!
+James Finney Thank you very much!!!
Great job . I like how you glued 2 - 3 oz to the back of 5 - 6 oz instead of just using 6 - 9 oz like I see other people do. Makes the inside smooth so it don't rub the finish off the gun.
+webslinger67 Thank you!!! Yes, that's exactly my intention of gluing two pieces of leather together!!!
+garyipip would you mind making a video stepping us through your process of making the pattern for this, and your other holsters.?
+garyipip can I ask what kind of thread you used?
+webslinger67. I was wondering about the thread also
I think I am going to start looking for a S&W snubbie Mod 10 with a bull barrel. Good video. thanks
Thank you very much!!!
That's a lost art. Well done.
Thank you very much!!!

+JunkMailBoxStuff Thank you very much!!! I haven't try that yet, but that's an good idea, I am sure will try it!!! Best regards.
Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing this!!
+Donna Roberts Thank you!!!

Needing a holster for my Smith 36-2. And for a Smith model 457.
Nice craftsmanship!
Thank you very much!!!

Golden Items made from Golden Hands!
Nice work. A video on making a pattern for something like this would be nice. How do you decide the margins around a wet formed piece like this?
awesome work love it....
Thank you very much!!!
No basket weave? Nice work brother!
Nice work ✌
Really nice work
Thank you very much!!
Great work! How this gets 4 thumbs down I cannot understand. What the heck could they possibly dislike about this video?
Thank you very much!!!

However, I want to include oil based dye...would you dye your leather as a final step like in your video - or after the glue of both pieces before stiching? Thanks for sharing, Alex
+AlexG Thank you very much!!! I don't usually dye, but I do like to apply a few coatings of neatsfoot oil to give it a vintage look!!!
Great job sir!
May I ask where you got the leather?
Texture is so great.
Awesome vintage look !!! And do you do this for a living if so how much do you charge per holster ?
Do you have a video showing how you laid your pattern out
Good job
Thanks

+Steve Garcia Thank you! The thread is 201D (approx. 2mm thick) waxed polyester…Yep, Sam Andrews rocks!!! great video from Hank Strange!!!
@@garyipip can you make me one for a model 36 snub-nosed

Nice holster! I’ve started dabbling in leather work and I would like to start making holsters like this. Did you make the pattern on your own? I’m looking for a basic pattern like this to give me a starting point.
Good job! What kind of leather did you use?
Can I ask what size thread and needles? Total beginner here.
What is the pattern making process. Measurement wise ???
Where do you get the leather and tools
Ware do I go to by your holsters
Amazing work Gary
How did you measure the leather size required for the gun?
Thank you very much!!! I laid the gun on a piece of paper, and eyeball the size I need!!! Might took a few time before getting it right!!!
khsoust there are many tutorials online about laying out for holsters. Look for Al Stohlman books.
What was the tool you used to punch the holes ? Did you use warm water ?
+frankgon4 If you mean the stitching hole, that was an stitching awl! For the belt loop, that was a hole puncher, and a chisel! Yes, I used warm water!!!

How many Golden Minks had to be killed to get that container of Mink Oil???

Hi Gary
I was wondering, do you do you design your own templates?
Are you interested in selling one?
TIA
Thanks David. Yes, I do design my own templates, however, most of them were chucked or lost!!! Thanks anyway!!!
garyipip thanks Gary I’ll try learning to make one on my own.
Merry Christmas 🎄
Hey David, I do have a video about making pattern:

It might not be a big help, but hopefully you will find something useful!!!
Happy stitching!! and Merry Christmas!!!
Will this concept work for a semi auto pistol?
Yes, please refer to this:
ruclips.net/video/embHyIrWVd4/видео.html
