I've made a few knife sheaths, so I'm not a complete novice, and I'd like to make a holster like this for an old Dan Wesson .357 mag. Should I use veg tanned leather, and if so, what weight? Yours looks a lot heavier than anything I've used in the past. Recommendations will be much appreciated.
I use veg-tanned leather for holsters... I have heard from several sources (I cannot confirm) that chrome tanned leather will damage finishes on metal. For larger guns I use 5-6 or 7-9 ounce leather (depends what I have and just how heavy the guns is). I try to place the hardware so that it doesn't touch the metal... you can line the leather after applying hardware as well... some people worry quite a bit about hurting the finish... especially on collectibles. I have used 3-4 ounce leather for one of those tiny 22 cal revolvers. Test out different weights of leather for whatever you're making and decide what you like... if you trust to hold up... go with it.

A little oil on the edges before burnishing works wonders. Not too much though. Then you'll have to wait a day or so for the leather to absorb it.
I've never tried oil for burnishing.... I'll have to give that a shot... Thanks!

@@GPWoodworks This ia a pretty heavy piece with a 6" barrel, and I have some 9oz veg tanned, so I'm going to start with that. Thanks for the insight.
