- "Lofsöngur" ("Hymn"), also known as "Ó Guð vors lands" ("O, God of Our Land"), is the national anthem of the Republic of Iceland ( Lýðveldið Ísland). The lyrics are by Matthías Jochumsson and the music by Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson. It was adopted in 1944.
In Iceland, nation-wide celebrations were held throughout 1874 to mark the 1000th anniversary of the first Norse settlement of the island. (This is the “Iceland’s thousand years” that are referenced in the anthem.) To mark the occassion, the Bishop of Iceland decreed that church services on August 2 of that year were to be held based on the anniversary, and the text to be presented was Psalm 90. The Rev. Matthías Jochumsson then decided to write a poem based on the Biblical text and the millennial anniversary. While abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland, he met up with Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson, who Jochumsson asked to compose music for his poem.
While popular, it was not considered a national anthem. Icelandic independence was still over 40 years away. At the time that “Ó, Guð vors lands” (O, God of Our Land) was written, Icelanders usually sung “Eldgamla Ísafold” by Bjarni Thorarensen as a national anthem. However, that song had anti-Danish (the colonial power) lyrics and was set to the tune of the British national anthem. Therefore “Ó, Guð vors lands” (O, God of Our Land) was played as the national anthem when soverignity was proclaimed in 1918. The anthem has three verses, but the first is usually the one sung. - Видеоклипы
Lovely anthem for a wonderful country. I never regret having studied Old Icelandic at university!
If you are a Brit, how did you feel about that "game" in 2016? Lol.

The text of this anthem is not only poetic and modest, the melody is very sentimental and harmonic. I think, that types of church melodies are characteristic for all norse-germanic-lutheran nations of Europe.
The sound of the Icelandic national anthem has been described as sounding like angels at the gates of heaven. People have said that it's what Stefán Karl Stefánsson (an Icelandic actor, who died from cancer in 2018) will hear.

Áfram Ísland! 🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸 the biggest "little country" in the world!
Icelandic is very similar to Old Norse.
Yes, all North Germanic languages are ultimately derived from Old Norse, but Icelandic is one of the two that have remained closest to Old Norse, the other being Faroese. This is because Iceland and the Faroe Islands are relatively isolated, compared to Scandinavia. And so Icelandic retains many features of Old Norse, as well as some letters that are no longer used in other Germanic languages.
The writing in icelandic is the same as old norse just with new letters instead of the more simple runes
@@petercdowney Icelandic is West Germanic like English is
@@bruhz_089 no, that is wrong..Icelandic is North Germanic. Not West. Where do you even get that from?.
@@northernskow3443 I got it from Wikipedia it's probably both North and West but it doesn't matter anyways

Actually they’re celebrating becoming a republic on that day in 1944. They’d become independent in December 1918, but sharing the king with Denmark. From 1940 they had to have a Regent, as for obvious reasons King Christian couldn’t leave Denmark, and in 1944 they voted to become a republic, and the Regent was elected the first President by the Althing.
good one
Would it be too much to request for the "state" anthems of the Mariana Islands and Guam?
There are parts of this anthem that fits the English translation lyrics why?

I must say I'm a little surprised that among the Nordic countries, it's only the Danish national anthem that references the old Norse roots with a mention of 'Freja'. But it makes sense when you think about the songs being written and composed around a time when Christianity was very strong in all the countries. Although the Swedish is cool as it is a “Song to the North”. Even though all the song are beautiful and have that Christian feel over them, I still can't believe that Norway and especially Iceland, have such Christian influences, because Icelandic is the closest language to the Norse of old and would have thought they wanted to celebrate their heritage, but apparently they were already massively converted to Christian, when they had to choose their anthem.

Since so many Icelanders have been inculcated into atheism these days, I bet many of them refuse to sing this these days.
not true, i don't know anyone who does not sing it because of religious reasons.
@@einargauti7534 Well you've tonnes of atheists now, and your capitalist class has imported thousands of Muslims in the last generation, so I expect someone will complain.
@@anonb4632 You are very stupid, yes many are atheist, we have not imported thousands of Muslims, most immigrants are Polish and therefore Catholic. Get your facts right, don't be that guy/woman who blames it on Muslims and atheists. Just because our national anthem is the way it is does not mean people complain about it for religious reasons, we respect our heritage and understand it, even if many don't believe in God, that does not matter when it comes to our national anthem.
@@einargauti7534 thanks for your explanation but I would like to understand how a religious hymn is still so popular among a nation where apparently many are not religious anymore. Were there never any attempts for an alternative text ? For me as a Christian believer of course I like the text but I wonder about how non-believers like this text ? Or is it more the melody itself which seems to come directly from heaven ? If I would be Icelandic I would be very proud - at least I have relatives there so I feel very close to Iceland .
It's hilarious how pissy you people get when people have different beliefs than you. Christians are so pathetic. 😂
