- Flower of Scotland is a Scottish song, used frequently at special occasions and sporting events. Although there is no official national anthem of Scotland, Flower of Scotland is one of a number of songs which fulfil this role, along with the older Scots Wha Hae, and Scotland the Brave, amongst others. It was written by Roy Williamson of the folk group the Corries, and presented in 1967, and refers to the victory of the Scots, led by Robert the Bruce, over England's Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
In 2004, lawyers for the devolved Scottish Parliament advised that it was within the legal competence of the Scottish Parliament to choose a national anthem for Scotland, countering the suggestion that it would be a matter reserved to the Parliament of the United Kingdom. This ruling prompted some interest in the idea, and a petition to the Scottish Parliament's petitions committee supported by the Scottish Green Party was referred without recommendation to the Scottish Executive who chose to take no action, considering the issue not to be a political priority. There have been subsequent attempts to re-open the debate on a national anthem for Scotland.

Cristian Conde Muñoz my great great grandparents from my dads side are from Scotland, they moved to Argentina had children who then had children themselves and then moved back to Britain but to England now, that’s how I was born. My mum’s family is English so if granny stayed in Argentine or moved to Scotland I wouldn’t be here
I'm brazilian and have no scottish ancestry, but when my scottish friend sang me this anthem I almost cried and I didnt even understand the meaning. Now I do and it's even more beautiful. Freedom for Scotland 🏴
For those who don't know, the proud Edward being talked about can either be Edward I or Edward II (alternatively, it's both), kings of England who William Wallace, Robert Bruce, and Andrew Moray led the charges of the Scottish clans against. The song has underlying themes of the bravery of the Scots during the Scottish Wars of Independence.
I feel like the lines "O'er land that is lost now, Which those so dearly held" are referring to the eventual loss of the wars and Scotland joining with England. Or something along those lines.
I was born and have lived in Scotland my entire life, there's nothing quite like our wee nation and I'm proud of that.

It’s also ironic because historically Scotland has been feared for their military. In ww1 the British army would choose Scottish soldiers before anyone else because they were intimidating. In Ancient Rome, when the romans tried to take Scotland, the warriors would throw themselves on the spears of the romans to give another warrior the chance to take the soldier from behind.

Very hard to not shed a tear or two when hearing the Scottish national song. All the emotions from the pain and suffering by the hands of the English is well woven into the song, as well as the Scottish tenacity to endure it all and grow stronger.. into immortality. Its very funny and crazy, how someone from a small village in Kenya, east Africa can just fall in love with a country he has never been to...I first learnt of Scotland through the song" the mull of kentyre" the bag pipes played skillfully, beautifully and amazingly. Then later I learnt that that's not the national anthem of Scotland, I searched and came across this rich history telling national anthem, so emotional and too personal...then i watched so many documentaries about the Scotland highlands, the mull of kintyre itself, the culture, education system especially the university of Dundee. Through years I have just loved Scotland, I hope one day I walk on those bare hills, those beautiful romantic valleys, during the winter I walk...this is my dream, I hope it come true, I hope...
