    Great idea to change the fuel filter and not use the nasty old fuel.

      thanks eric. that fuel was horrible smelling! im not sure if it was just getting algae build up or if someone added some "concoction" like atf and fuel additive to the tanks. it was bad!

    I've driven A LOT of engine/transmission combinations that have been put in heavy commercial trucks over the last 40 years and the 3406 mechanical with either a 13 or 18 speed are THE MOST POWERFUL trucks I even had the pleasure to drive. If given the option, I would take a Cat 3406 engine from 1987 over a brand new X15 605 Cummins in a heartbeat, hands down, no question!

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  4 года назад +11

      i totally agree with all of that. simple is reliable...todays engines are so sensitive. they can have catastrophic failures for the smallest problem

      Last year I dropped an 3406-B into my 06 T600,bought the truck new in 07 with the C 15 Acert, ran the thing for 1.5 million miles before it literally BLEW UP,CAT wanted 30 for an exchange reman.Had an old 93 3406-B at the house, so my 85 yo father and myself re-did the old bitch ,plugged it in and I cant be more happier! ...........Got the memories from back in the day!.........Hammer down and keep the shiny side up.

    Kenworths with Cats are a match made in Heaven. I drive a t401 with a c12 in Australia. It's got 1.4 million km on it or 870,000 miles without having an in chassis done to it yet, still running great. Mind you that's mostly local work too, don't get to do much highway stuff. Out pulls a lot of the newer Euro stuff too on the hills fully loaded with at least a 100hp deficit. You've got a new subscriber here, I'll be following this project for sure.

    No DEF, No EGR, No E-logs, what's not to like? It makes sense to put that old truck back on the road. I live in Virginia and I know a guy with a farm out in the Blue Ridge Mountains who pulled an old R model Mack around the same age out of a barn. It's going back to work for next year's harvest. With all the things I mentioned and the price of new trucks today, it makes sense sometimes.

    If you're doing a bunch of old starts, consider a pump sprayer for your fuel tank. We just take the sprayer valve off, have some adapters to go to the fuel line. Fill the pump pot with diesel, pump it up until fuel comes out the return and once it fires open the vent on the pot. Small supply, but there's usually enough reserve in the filters for a decent run out

Pre-emissions, no DEF. all mechanical, that truck could run another 500,000 miles easy with a little maintenance. Trucks like that are worth money these days. You can’t get that kind of life out of newer ones with all the emissions stuff. I’ll bet cleaned up, a new paint job, that truck would sell for over $50k.

    Always a wonder to me why some of these trucks are just parked/put out to pasture as it were.,. What happened--even though most of the time you never hear the true story.
    Love the knowledge here-

    Morning JC. Good job well done 👍🏻 Love the sound of the CAT 🤣 It’s like an old British Gardner Diesel engine 😄 Its an education watching you get things going as you’ve a fantastic technique of explaining things that keep my attention. Take care buddy until the next time 👍🏻 Cheers Stevie 😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

    Great project JC & Lady, another good truck saved. Good one to work on as there is NO drive by wire electronics or computers to sort out. Usually any truck you buy has 3 options as to which way you will go with it, I am eager to see what you choose to do with this one, one thing for sure it will be cost effective ! Thanks for great content JC & Lady.
