Important to note: All of these (without exceptions) are in their conscript service - meaning, they're not professional - they've done this for a maximum of like 9 months before they start competing in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

I had a friend who was in Garden in the 80s. He told us that it was extremely high discipline and errors was not acceptable.
Many of them are elite sportsmen/youth and are used to drill/train hard.

@@bjornjensen3382 Yeah, most people seem to think that the HMKG is the easiest service in the Norwegian military and they get a ton of shit for being "lazy". Be that as it may, but the 3rd Company doesn't at all fit into such a world view.
As a former guard in HMKG, i can tell you that its a lot of hours practising. The 3rd company is just drill and music.
When i was on duty it was 1st company was Sniper/rangers
2nd VIP transport and recon.
3rd was drill and music
4th is a tribute company for the fallen guards that fell under WWII at Midtskogen (Elverum) priventing the nazis to capture the king when he escaped to sweden and then to England
5th company was transport and commando staff.
The colored flags that they have on there rifles under the show is the company flags
They've gained legend status in Scotland, and won best tattoo several times. saw them when I was a wee romper.
Hahaha! Funny to watch myself performing! I was in the signalplatoon and playing the fielddrums at the front with white bandoliers. This was performed in Oslo Spektrum in Norway september 2004 and was our last performance before we ended our one year military service. The banners or flags you see on the garand rifles represent each of the eight guard companies.
Eight companies? It was 5 when I was in HMKG (2001)
@@feonor26 If i recall correctly, 6. Gardekompani = Gardeskolen, 7 Gardekompani = Befalselever ved HMKG. I can't recall what nr. 8 was.
@@feonor26I had to check with someone who knows HMKG history. It seems that 8 gardekompani, was envisioned as a mortar platoon in the 50ties, but it never materialized. Later it was envisioned as a tank platoon in the 70ties, but then again, it didi not materialize. However, the standard was created. I guess i learned something new today as well. xD

Major General Sir Nils Olav III, Baron of the Bouvet Islands is a king penguin who resides in Edinburgh Zoo, Scotland. He is the mascot and colonel-in-chief of the Norwegian King's Guard
This is the Oslo Spectrum, at the annual Norwegian Military Tattoo. I have been there a couple of times, and witnessing the skills of the Royal Kings Guard never ceases to amaze me.
Norway has a strong tradition of marching band music. The way we celebrate Constitution/National Day, 17 May, with children's parades has contributed to many children in the country starting to play in marching bands from an early age. In the very first year they are part of the band, they take part in the parade on 17 May (without playing their instrument) but like the others they have to practice marching. Most of the people who are accepted into the King's Guard probably have a past as marching musicians from an early age, and they have all known the chafing wounds after taking part in several events, from morning to night, on Constitution Day. They therefore offer an advantage that other countries do not have to the same extent.
That was a fun rewatch 😂 almost 20 years ago now 😮
As has been said, the venue is Oslo Spektrum. The bayonet-mounted "flags" are fendels, representing the 8 original companies of the kings guard. Today there ate only 5, the 3rd being the music and drill company that performs both domestically and abroad.
I play the bells here, but if memory serves, this was the last perfomance of the tattoo, meaning that less then 24 hours later, the lot of us were back to being civilians .
There is 6 companies if you count the recruit company :) I was in the 4th in 2018

Ahh, Gammel Jegermarsj at the end there... As someone who used to play in band as a teen my feet instinctively start hurting when that song starts playing.

And the bayonettes are very real and very sharp as well.
I believe this is from Oslo Spektrum, the large, multi-purpose arena in Oslo, with a backdrop depicting Akershus Fortress in Oslo.
The _really_ impressive thing about these guys is that they are all one-year conscripts. The event is typically towards the end of April, and they started their basic training just 8-9 months prior.
A fun little detail about the HMK Guard parade uniform is that it is a mix of different uniforms. If you get a closer look, you see that the jackets are a deep blue/indigo with red trim, and the pants are black with white trim. This is said to be a throwback to when the regiment formed in the mid-19th century, when you "use what you have/get from others" instead of creating a brand new cohesive uniform. I.e. the bowler hats are a copy of the Italian Bersaglieri Troops' hat.
Another fun detail: The regiment's mascot is a (live) penguin: The current one is Major General Sir Nils Olav III, who lives in Edinburgh Zoo. :D
The piece they end with, Gammel Jegermarsj ("Old Commando's March"), is considered the regiment's trademark, and is "always" performed at events like this. They typically have a "funny" piece as well, having covered everything from Lady Gaga, to Moment for Marricone here.
I was with the guard performing at Edinburgh last august. Our goal to achieve "best in show" was constant effort of professionalism and showmanship. We're trained from the moment we are conscripted on focusing on details, precision and excellence, all in the span of a year

I will here try to give an in-depth description of the drill program itself.
In fact, there are almost no commands given in the drill program. Usually it is only a commander in front of the band who gives the signal to march forward, then the outermost man in the last row shouts LOUDLY "Forward", and then "MARCH". The drill contingent then marches into the arena, usually from the left short side and makes a 90' degree break towards the middle of the long side where they do a hold, similar to the drill we see here from Oslo Spektrum.
The commanding officer salutes the VIP (He commands: "Presenter err") The band and the drill squad will then stand facing the long side of the arena. After the salute has been given, the drum major and the drill commander will remain here. They then command ("on axle err") the drill squad takes the rifle on axle, while the band picks up sticks and horns and at the same time starts playing a movement part to music and they then march back and end up in the middle of the arena with the front facing the opposite way from where they entered the arena. Then the drill program runs its course with the bands "own part", the rifle troop's "own part to music", the rifle troop's "silent part", The Drum Stunt, a joint drillpart with music and rifle troop, which then transitions into The Old Hunter's March, where you end up midwayin the march with a "twisting" of the whole drill squad, which ends up with the drill squad facing the VIP, exactly back in place facing front of the commanders, who has stood in the same place throughout the whole drill program.
Then comes the "tappenstrek", stitched together with a calm piece of music (it is often here that the whole band and rifle squad sing). Then the commander says again "present err" and "on axis err". Then the band again picks up sticks and horns, and they then start with a familiar march and go directly in "turn" row by row and march towards the middle of the arena where they make a 90' turn to the right and then march out of the arena.
The whole drill program with music and movements is actually something you learn in advance (we train every day for several months), and in the end it sticks so well in your head that in "theory" you don't need to think about how or what you do. (This was how it was for me). I went through the drill show with a strange feeling that I just "pressed" a "switch", then the drill program automatically went "into me" and it didn't stop until we were out of the arena.
An important factor to keep in mind when watching the drill program is that the music troupe learns the drill program by connecting all of the movements to the music. (Like this: From THAT specific note in the melody, you have to turn to the left, further in the melody you have to take three steps forward, then you take a holdt, then you turn COMPLETELY around and then stand still for 5 measures...) The rifle squad learns the drill program by counting. So they know that when they get to the number 656 they have to do exactly THAT movement e.g. This again means that EVERYONE must count EXACTLY the same, otherwise you can easily see if someone counts too quickly or too slowly. But they know that at the start of that march they must be on THAT spesific number. So they have opportunities to catch up along the way.
I was in the guard in 2005. I played the clarinet, and here you can see a filming of the 2005 contingent's very last drill demonstration in the guard camp in Oslo on the 14. of June 2005. This was just before we went to Edinburgh to participate in the Edinburgh military tattoo. This drill program is filmed with 5 cameras. We call this drill the OLA drill. This is because it is usually only carried out in Norway and in terms of time it takes close to half an hour to complete. I myself attend the recording.

What really impresses me is that they are young conscripts soldiers,, and at the time of the norwegian tatoo they only had about 6/ 7 months of training.
They have a extremly well drilled program that train a new company each year, with girls and boys in their late teens. Impressive that they are consistent at this high level of precision each year
I went to see them one year at the last performance of the year at Huseby camp, where they reside for their service period, and that was an absolutly amazing experience.
They have also visited the town I live in on many occasions and they are impressive to see live.
The flags represent the different companies in the Kings Guard. I was in the second company and our flag was green !
I've seen them many times on Constitution Day. Also, my school marching band had marching training with representatives from Garden, and because of this connection we also had the new police horses come to our march trainings to get marching band exposure before Constitution Day. It was quite an experience.

I was in the kings guard here in Norway but as a soldier. And i can tell you, these guys stod outside in 30+ degrees doing this all day, everyday.
They are all conscripts by the way. 19/20 year olds.

Believe it or not. The hardest parts for us (drill) was lining up properly at 5:37 and the cross at 6:10. It was quite visible for several of our performances throughout the year. But we were pretty happy about the "silent drill" part from 2:50 :) Good times!
If I'm not mistaken, there was previously a height requirement to be part of the King's Guard. At least that's what we were told by men who served. I personally know two who have been either in the guard squad or in the band. Everyone had to be within 5 cm of height, and it was very special to see the drill squad in action when everyone was the same height.
Today, the requirement has fallen away, presumably after women were given compulsory service in the armed forces. There is still a requirement that you must be at least 170 cm tall due to the length of the weapon, and those who keep watch in front of the castle at the same time must be approximately the same height.
I belive the reason for the similar height requirement is that people with similar length usually have the same length legs, and step length. Makes it easier to coordinate when marching.
Maynly one year recruits performing. I think the Edinburg Tattoo is the highlight for the recruits. Greetings from Norway !
I served in the drill unit back in 2015 (the guys with the rifles). Sadly we did not get to go to Edinburgh that year, but there's a few videos out there from our visit to the Royal Nova Scotia Tattoo in Canada.

It's real bayonets btw... Those things are sharp. And note one: No one's shouting commands. They do all of this by heart. And they are all around 18-20 years old on their mandatory year of service.
I think this was in Oslo on a show jubileum veterans celebration Balkan service in the 90's . We did the same thing 40 year Un celebration in lebanon
The flags are a relatively new adition. When I was there, they only had 4, 1 representing each company. They have since made the drill and music platoons their own "company", the 3rd, while 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th is the ones we had when I was there, the drill/music platoons where part of the 1st company.
I was there 50 years ago, and we used the flags in our drill performance. But as the guard dates back to 1856, you may still call it relatively new ...
When they do the Rifle toss, remember one thing; that's a real bayonet affixed to the barrel.

Well, Norway´s HMK has a standing invitation to the Edinburgh Tattoo Show, so when ever they do not partisipate, there must be some reel out of the ordinary reason.

Norway drill team is only serving for 11 months.
If you want to see them live, they travel to scotland every four years or so. Next preformance in Edinburgh will be around 2027

I saw a RUclips video of them competing against an American band in the US. They won!
They also performed at Windsor for our late Queen Elizabeth II at the beginning of her platinum jubilee celebrations. It was a very short performance so they didn't really have a chance to do anything very impressive, unlike here.

I'm from Norway. But these boys and girls have a year in the military. The first three at the recruit school. So they only have 9 months in HMKG. They are incredible
