I have to hand it to Turner, he seemed to have a very genuine desire to make a difference and educate kids about the environment with this show and definitely went above and beyond what most executives would generally do to make it a reality
It's crazy that there are 100+ episodes. I watched it semi-regularly growing up and it seemed like I only saw the same 10-15 episodes over and over again lol
😂ikr i remember captain pollution. and few other episodes.
Remember that episode where Wheeler quits the Planeteers and wishes they never formed and goes back in time to steal away the ring from his past self? They only played it once a week every week till the end of time!
Carl Watkins LOL 😂
That's because for a long while production troubles meant there were only a handful of completed episodes ready for the premiere deadline, so they just kept showing those few episodes over and over until they had more to broadcast.
@@givmespace it was a perfect formula for hate
Who thinks there shouldve been a Captain Planet/Toxic Avengers crossover?
That would be cool, Voyager this is one of the series that fell victim to the Satanic panic. Turner never had relevancy, even than. He went loopy
✋
Toxic Crusaders was the animated one Toxic Avenger was the one who liked crushing criminal's skulls and dry cleaning elderly criminal lady
Time for the toxic crusaders theme song "we are the toxic crusaders and of that we are pretty sure of×5" lol with the sound of an accordion to make your ears bleed
The Toxic Avenger would clearly kick the living shit out of Captain Planet. Troma beats animation.
I THINK IN A COMIC OF TOXIE THEY MAKE A PARODY, WITH CORPORAL GLOBE AND THE GLOBETEERS
🎵Captain Planet! He's a hero! Gonna take pollution down to zero!🎵
You'll pay for this, Captain Planet!
HE FAILED.
🎵He's our powers magnified, And he's fighting on the planet's side.
🎵Captain Planet, he's our hero,

Because saving the planet

And now the German version (which i STILL remember)

When the theme song is the most memorable thing about a show, that's a bad sign.
Just want to voice my appreciation for the amount of research that goes into each of these episodes. I've been entertained and learned a lot by being subscribed to this channel. Keep up the great work!
The episodes that delved into Drug addiction In the form of a fictional drug called "Bliss" and the "Racism" episode that involved gang violence were possibly the most unflinchingly aplomb and left a lasting impression in my youth.
Also AIDS
I was gonna say this show covered alot and I think Whoopi had something to do with that.
Even if kinda dumb sometimes she's pretty outspoken about stuff she cares about at the time.
The one on animal experimentation broke me.
Man, I'll always always remember the episode when they saw Hitler. And Cap, just being near the guy, was overwhelmed and brought to his knees by Hitler's hatred. That had struck a chord with me and I began looking up info on WW2.
Overall, one of my favourite cartoon series. To this day I tell my friends (jokingly) don't litter "cause it'll piss off Gaia" (but I definitely know the show had an impact on my trash disposal habits). I really wish a series like this could work in this day and age, but regardless I am thankful for its impact on a generation.
I saw that episode as well, Geon. That was pretty intense. Cap getting weak by Hitler’s hatred and prejudice was rough.
That episode made me wonder what would’ve happened if it was Stalin in that episode buying the bomb. It would’ve been interesting concept considering one of the planeters is from the Soviet Union and even today Stalin is a mixed figure in the former Soviet States, so imagine the drama from that situation.
Very True, Braydon. Linka is from the Soviet Union. There definitely would have been drama right there if Stalin had that bomb.
When any dictator looks at you angrily you tend to wig out
Yeah that was a great one. Remember when Captain Planet turned into a dog and mauled those Helter Skelter Manson killers?
Part of the DIC era budget was because Exxon was legally obligated to create the show after a certain freighter leak.
Mostly because Ted Turner paid too many people off.
Exxon Valdez?
Ha.
So really it was a BS Public PR stunt? 😂
@@CommodoreFan64 Retribution in the form of star studded, diversity cast PSA's.
But... the show had a villain named Duke Nukem. Which one came first? 🤔
Technically the Captain Planet villain came first but apparently the production did not copyright his name so it was fine for 3D Realms.
@@stefanocampelli2694 well technically you don't need to copyright your work officially for it to be yours. You just have to prove you created it first. My guess is, it just wasn't something hanna barbera cared about
@@bern9642 the characters were unique. Since neither is derivative of the other, neither is infringing on any creative aspect.
Because of Captain Planet's Duke Nukem, the first Duke Nukem game from 1991 was in fact renamed "Duke Nukum" in an updated version. But when making the sequel, they found out that the name wasn't copyrighted, so Duke became Nukem again in 1993's Duke Nukem II
This is actually a stupid question
Anyone else remember the Captain Planet Marathon that would happen every Earth Day on Boomerang?
Yep did they stop doing that. The new boomerang has changed a lot.
jaggin 75 idk, but Cartoon Network made an abridged episode, it’s on there RUclips channel
@@nightwarper1760 Thanks for letting me know.

@@nightwarper1760 I saw it, it was funny. I'm just kind of puzzled a bit because I dont see a balance on cartoon network so this wasnt really unexpected or that intriguing.
But for Captain Planet I say it was good. I did laugh so I hope the superhero can make his big return soon. Also have you seen the lil dicky earth song and leonardo DiCaprio is making a live action movie of Captain planet
It was too subtle, I didn't think about the environment after each episode was over, I think it was more for adults to think they were making a difference.
Dr. Blight was a babe. *wolf whistle.* 😍💕💕
unfortunately while Blight was originally voiced by Meg Ryan, she was later voiced by Mark Kay Bergman of South Park fame who committed suicide RIP
The nineties was the decade of ridiculously sexy female cartoon characters. Almost every show had at LEAST one.
Oh thank god, i thought i was the only one who thought so..
They predicted the evil symbol that is the Karen haircut.
Dr. Blight to me was basically a female Harvey Dent
The Don Cheadle movie was pretty good
The thumbnails always turned me off. When i finally clicked on them i couldn't stop cracking up
You beat me to it.
Legit I really want a live action Captain Planet movie to star him as Captain Planet. Or if that is not possible, considering he nearly overheated to death in that makeup for the 2011 gag movie, Rhodey in the comics needs a power up that transforms him into a totally lawyer friendly equivalent of Captain Planet- he's dating Captain Marvel right now, let him be Captain Planet.
Next time on Death Battle, Captain Planet vs Swamp Thing.
I also enjoyed Hotel Rwanda
Wow! I started this video as mostly entertainment and nostalgia, but soon realized that I am learning WAY more than I expected about how monumental Captain Planet actually was. Phenomenal video! Highly educational.
A Captain Planet/Superman crossover wouldve worked as well cause it couldve revealed that the destruction of Krypton concerned the future of Earth. Plus Lex Luthor couldve joined forces with all the eco villains.
I loved this show, and while I'm pretty lazy about conservation, it definitely influenced the way I do little things in my everyday life.
Also, it was always frustrating that people made fun of heart, but even as a kid I realized that it was a great power, as the others could have been very destructive without it. :)
If Ma-ti was evil we are all dead >_<
its a safe bet he could also control Humans
I think it's because he always doubted himself and the rest of the team had to encourage him and give him a pep talk to get him to be brave,
Now that I'm an adult i totally get what the writers were doing there, it was a message to kids to say even though it might seem tough, it's worth doing. Which ultimately gets us as kids to act.
I work in conservation and land management now, and I can tell you, I feel like Ma'ti most days haha
there was that story arc (i think it was two episodes) with the spirit of mars, gaia's equal, coming to earth. he gave the planeteers gloves that greatly amplified their powers, though they had to take off the rings to put the gloves on. ma-ti refused. part of me always wanted to know what the power of heart dialed up to 11 would have been like :)
they actually recently had a captain planet parody character on rick and morty in the form of planetina who morty falls in love with and saves from her version of the planeteers by killing them when they were about to sell her to terrorists. planetina is a very sweet and honest god-like entity but she ends up going on a murderous rampage on everything she sees harming the planet (such as burning alive a bunch of oil workers) and the theory is that the reason she does this is because there was no heart (thus making her more a force of nature and fairly unstable). so ya,point is that i think people (at least those that watch rick and morty) are kind of now getting how important the heart is.XD
I always thought Richard Dean Anderson, with his naturally flowing mullet would be a great live action Captian Planet.
That would be too much majesty for a single film.
And yet Don Cheadle is the _true_ live-action Captain Planet
Theo Von for Captain Planet! lol
Not only that, but he would stop the evil corporation using a paper clip, peanut butter, a ball of navel lint, and a cosmetic mirror.
One unique thing about the series is how they aged the Planeteers in the final season. Wheeler, Linka and company went from around 13 years old to 16 by the end of the series and every Planeteer got a re-design where they were slightly older and looked more heroic. It was quite interesting and I wish they had done it sooner.
Remember the power is yours.
And knowing is half the battle!
Sounds a lot like, "remember, you are the real heroes"
@@TekkLuthor he means he is fictional so he can't reallystop pollution. Only real humans can. 😅
there is only one solution for earth's pollution: YOU!

Producing tons of plastic figurines wrapped in even more plastic sounds like a great way to save the planet! Thank you TED TURNER! XD
Idk about pollution but I knew then that color changing action figures we're and still are awesome
It caused polution to make them
Really loved the recentish OKKO crossover with Captain Planet, it was a bit on the nose but it was incredibly funny.
OK KO is a great show and the Captain Planet episode's probably one of the best ones.
I think it's kinda telling about the modern history of environmentalism that the "punchline" to that ep was how Captain Planet failed at stopping the climatepocalypse.
Again, I blame the neoliberal* emphasis on "personal responsibility" over the actual massive societal changes needed to fix stuff combined with the ideological trends currently lumped under "degrowth" that created a perception of environmentally sound living as societally mandated aceticism/austerity.
This is why I'm a fully-automated luxury socialist people, read Leigh Alexander y'all!

I still catch myself humming the theme song every once and a while....
Well this documentary didn't help that much. I need to listen to the Duck Tales theme on repeat for a few hours to bleach my mind of this tripe.
Linka's from Eastern Europe huh....we'll ignore her red star belt buckle I guess....
Tony Jackson Well, I think Linka being from Eastern Europe shows that even people from combative societies can work together for a common cause. Not necessarily a bad message.
It was just a joke man.
@@tonyjackson1636 In Soviet Russia, jokes on you!!!!!
There had always been an interesting thought in me about Linka when it came to that episode where they go back in time to World war 2 with Hitler buying a nuke from Dr. Blight. It would’ve been interesting concept considering Linka is from the Soviet Union and even today Stalin is a mixed figure in the former Soviet States, so imagine the drama from that situation.
Great video. I once wrote a d&d campaign based on Captain Planet. It was set during the industrial revolution and the planeteers were basically the top five agents in a secret organization. Captain Planet was the combined essence of the original five founding agents resurrected by Gaia into an element avatar for her power. Each planeteer did have a ring, but tapping into those energies was dangerous and only for emergencies. All the villains were reworked for the time period. It was a lot of fun.
RLY? Did you? I LUV this premise!!! Victorian/Steampunk Captain Planet...
@@sandradermark8463 Yep. It was super fun. I should pitch it to Adi Shankur. He does the Bootleg Universe stuff and Castlevania on Netflix.

Who else can recite the theme song by HEART?
"Looting and polluting, is not the way. Hear what Captain Planet, has to say."
"The power, is YOURS!" * buh bam bamp *
O.o for the most part, I can hear the instrumentals once the summon for the cap starts...and then it falls into place. That's how catchy it was back then.
If LaVar Burton isn’t the best person to ever walk this Earth. That man is a global treasure.
I agree, hearing his voice as Kwame(spelling) was one of the reasons that I tuned into to watch this show. Also I really enjoyed the environmental message of the show. It got me into recycling and being more aware of my actions related to the environment. I had a few of the action figures and even an issue of the Marvel comic book, during my childhood. My fingers are crossed that someday soon the whole series comes out on DVD, especially since their are episodes from the final two seasons that I have never seen.
I still, till this day, have tremendous respect for Levar, for always being such a positive role model & for not playing racially stereotypical roles. Loved him in Captain Planet & he made me love reading with Reading Rainbow.
Bob Ross?
LeVar Burton was also in a fun horror movie called The Midnight Hour (1985)
I agree 100%! He was a huge influence on me since I pretty much watched everything hes been in since childhood! (Albiet mostly just coincidence). I would have to say that Reading Rainbow was one of my favorite shows as a small kid, and it taught me I wasnt American(😆) since I wanted to visit the places the program would showcase. I want my nephew to grow up to this once he grows up a bit. LeVar must be a real positive dude to be around!
Curiously, " OK, K.O.! Let's be Heroes" did a crossover episode that expanded on the CP lore. Kwame showed up in an episode and gave out the elemental rings to the cast so they could summon Captain Planet in order to stop Dr. Blights evil plans.
Then Captain Planet breaks the bad news to K.O., and the audience, about how he and the Planeteers tried saving the planet years ago only to result in a fruitless victory. Things didn't get better like they had hoped because the effects of climate change became irreversible.
Ouch.
Though Captain Planet was an interesting show, there were episodes in which it suggested that not everything was as straight forward as it seemed. I remember, in particular, an episode in which Doctor Blight had created a machine for time travel, and yet it was Gaia who ordered Blight's AI assistant to send Wheeler into the future. Also, there were times when the show bordered on planet worship and would become rather "preachy". There were also times in which the episode's ending was such that I could not help but wonder if the Planeteers themselves hadn't actually done more harm than good, plus it often seemed as if the "villains" weren't simply set up as a gimmick, as their actions never really made any sense. To that end, I could live without a live-action movie ever being made, especially given all the pollution that is generated from making a movie.
The show was excessively preachy, but I guess that's the problem when you create a cartoon to be essentially be a 22-minute animated PSA instead of for entertainment.
Really did enjoy this show as a kid. I remember the toys, but never bought one. Now that I know that some of the proceeds went to the Captain Planet Foundation, I wish I had.
I had Kwame, Wheeler, Linka, Mahti, Captain Planet and that giant Rat dude. Getting Gi to complete the team would have been amazing. I read later that she was an exclusive to (Kmart?) Or something like that.
I Hear Ya If I also Knew I would have had my Parents and Grandparents Buy me More when I was a Kid
i was either just a little too young at the time this show was a thing or they just didn't show it enough in canada to make a impact (a impact from the show: i'm still a BIG believer in saving the planet and such) but i wish i'd have known more about all this because i for sure would have gotten the toys (coming from the same chick that was donating to the world wildlife fund way back in elementary school. at least until around the time they sent me a empty toilet paper roll in the mail as a prop to explain what exotic bird traders use to hold birds: that just depressed me and i kinda said fuck it at that point cause my innocent mind was too young to be hearing about all of that). oh well.
We need a new cartoon for kids today,
Remember the POWER IS YOURS
It's not my power, its belong to Electric Company, they won't give me any, I have to paid deposit. That's not fair. ;)
Captain Propaganda?
I rooted for the villains as a kid. The glow in the dark Nukem figure was awesome!
That voice acting list is...surprising
It's quite amazing to hear how much of a positive impact this had! Being in Scotland I had the Megadrive game and boy, it was hard!!
I used to have a Captain Planet watch that was water powered. It was a pretty cool concept but kind of annoying that every couple hours I had to go to the restroom and run my hand under water just to tell the time.
Captain Planet was a cheesy creation of the Can-Do Optimism of the 90s but damn if I don't still somewhat enjoy it in ways even now. I had no idea that a percentage of the profits made off the series went to environmental charity and that it's still going on today - that actually really improves my perspective on it all, good that they were putting their money to work instead of just platitudes and moralizing.
can do optimism of the 90's? lol
@@bongojones2027 To be fair, Captain Planet first appeared in late 1990, so the many of the attitudes and ideas were still firmly entrenched in the 1980s, which was decidedly more "upbeat" and "positive." The mid-to-late 90s was when we saw the proliferation of the whole "gritty, so-called realistic, grimdark" motif.
@@MikeTXBC It was optimism that came in part from Baby Boomers' nostalgia revolving around the twentieth anniversary of Woodstock and Earth Day. They still thought that they could change the world if they just threw enough good vibrations at it.
My whole adult life I assumed this was just exploiting the fad of environmentalism for profit, I didn't realize what an honestly positive project this was.
Also, Don Cheadle NEEDS to be in the movie.
"hahahah, everyones a tree......"

The secret is IT REALLY IS WHAT YOU INITIALLY ASSUMED. That's why nobody likes Ted Turner because hes a con artist and the foundation isn't really all that it's cracked up to be either, which is why i busted my gut laughing at that point in the video. There Captain Planet Foundation is worse than the DARE program was and the salvation army scam, due to its emotionally manipulative practices.

I expected the origin of the show to be more cynical than it appears that it really was. As much respect as I had for the show when I thought it was more cynical, it’s truly impressive that the motivation appears to have been much more earnest than one could probably reasonably expect. That’s probably why it worked.
I'm surprised this hasn't been made into a live-action movie yet

Great stuff as usual. I remember the cartoon well but don't recall anyone picking up the toys...and I'm also shocked there were 100+ eps. Wow!

It seems that Levar Burton was a very big in the 90s, but not on screen Hollywood celebrity big, but more behind the scenes big. . . His role on Star Trek TNG seemed so small, Yet he was doing so many other things. . . Captain Planet, Reading Rainbow, And who knows what else?
When I was in school, this was the cartoon no one really liked, but watched anyway because it was sandwiched between better cartoons. Admitting you liked Captain Planet and the Planeteers was sort of akin to wearing a "kick me" sign.
I know people look back on it more fondly nowadays because of the early 90s cheese, the stories that were basically moralizing PSA's, the outdated stereotypes (of course the North American kid had to be an impulsive, selfish jerk), Captain Planet's mullet, the awful theme song, and the fact that the kid who got the power of Heart got seriously shafted, but are there any actual Captain Planet and the Planeteers fans that like the show unironically?
there is no advantage to liking this show ironically: it just took people a while to realize the show was right.
I loved this show, might have a toy or two. Great message, something maybe we need a refreshment of nowadays.
You know, as flawed as this series was, I'm glad it existed. I also wish there was some sort of modern spiritual successor today, one that was more scientifically accurate (ie. Nuclear power is actual good when used properly, GMOs are good and organic is mostly bad, more effective ways to be environmentally friendly, etc).
You need to be on Netflix! The quality of each episode is superb.
My friends still make fun of the "heart" power ring 🤣

I will never get used to Levar Burton's eyes. Big beautiful orbs that are totally normal size and for some reason look totally out of place unless covered by a hair band. But the man has some very good points in this video. He is a legend in his own time, which is pretty admirable.
If the Soviet Union no longer existed, and Linka was from the Soviet Union, is it really a retcon to place her in Eastern Europe, which, by the way, the majority of which was part of the Soviet Union? OR, maybe it's updating her region of origin for geographical and sociopolitical accuracy and people misuse the term "retcon" to explain any clarification of vague origins, rather than it's intended purpose of changing origins retroactively. Linka is from the same region of the world, it just wasn't the USSR, anymore.
