WOW, you make it look so easy. The reason its dying is because we live in a throw away society. Your art, is just like shoe repair. Im 51, i can apperciate your craftsmanship. I also worked at a Lincoln / Mercury new car dealership. I would always be back in the upolustry area. The work you artist do is amazing. I would watch these guys do repairs, to install vinyl tops on Town Cars and Grand Marquis. If i wasnt exposed to that atmosphere, i dont think i would apperciate what you do. Like you said, throw a seat cover on it and go. I had a simular repair done on my wifes Ford Focus a few years ago. She didnt understand ,why i would take it to be repaired. She picked the car up, and thought she had a new seat. She looked and looked. Flawless repair. Another great video. Happy New Year my friend.

I have found a hacksaw blade works just as well on sourdough bread as it does on foam. To get the perfect French stitch, you have to say things like chateau, cherie, and mon ami, otherwise, they looked perfect to me. Glad to see you're back to it, enjoy the freedom of no rent money burning away.

I think the secret in your French stitch is that your first stitch is through 2 layers of material and also 2 layers of foam with the bullet proof scrim backing. Strong sewing thread going through 2 layers of that will never pull apart.

After 43 years of doing your job, I know I am not telling you anything you don't know, but for the young guys, there is a tool that can be had for about $8.00 that pops those c-clips off super simple like. There are two sizes, the smaller one for that clip you did in this video and the larger clips used on window cranks. Some of the young guys may not have ever used a window crank.. LOL Love your work! If you keep making videos, I will keep watching them!

Richard you are completely right you can use a hack saw blade. Ive actually used a hack saw blade in a pinch. My personal preference is a band saw its quick and straight. I do this for a living and no matter how much I watch all the upholstery videos they never get old and i always seem to get more information out old videos ive watched. Thank you

Superb work and video. It's "symmetrical" as one side is the mirror image of the opposite side. "Asymmetrical" means that one side is not the mirror image of the other side (e.g. one cannot use use side to create the pattern for the opposite side. The prefix "a" before a word signifies that it is the antonym of the root word.)

Due to your great videos, I'm beginning to think I can make my own seat covers! I have several 70's cars that I'm going to need new seat upholstery, and it would probably cost a fortune to pay an auto upholstery shop to do them. The patterns on my seats are much simpler than that seat you just did, so I think it would be worth it to find a good used sewing machine and try it myself. I've installed seat covers and foam, headliners and door panels on 55-57 Chevys in my restoration work, so I have some experience installing. Now I'll try making them, thanks to you!

Rn im 7years into the trade as an apprentice. The maestro got me doing all the vehicles and helping him maintain his business upfloat doing orders amd calling customers to meeting other business owners. From 1920s to modern. Im well experienced. The only thing is i get so busy doing the other stuff that i cant seem to catch up to learn to sow at the shop itself or the man dont wanna teach me lowkey..deciding to just buy my own machine this year i dont wanna think bad but i do have a feeling if i learn i will end up putting my own maestro outta business cause i have more to offer than the man i also do deep detail, starlights, currently learning car wraps, restoration work etc....Everything with time.

Great content i just repaired my silverado seat and i gotta say pretty much the same thing and also nice French stitch my pops always did it like that and thats how i do it but if a customer wants to pay more sure i will do it there way lol but untill then im sure mine will hold up just fine thanks for the video have a good day Richard

I agree with classic vehicles like my 1967 C10 it has those clips in the door handle and window crank, from back when hu-manual windows were standard and power windows we options or not available. I have those two tools, too. They do have a defect the hook method seemed to avoid. When I press the special tool, as the in-structions say (the strange words and pictures 🤔), the little metal clips go flying. As VGG Derek likes to say, "I'll never see that again!" Lol. I learned to place my palm on the opposite side to block its' launch into obit. What way do you catch your crank handle lock clip? 🫣
Suggestion. 🫡 Have you done a demonstration of covering wood, metal, or plastic dash inserts and panels (even whole metal dashes 1913 to 1970s, mostly) in vinyl or leather? For example, in a situation where it was not made that way from the factory but would look better and a custom touch. Possibly match other upholstery like seats and door cards. Thanks.
Hello Steve, Thanks pal! As you may have seen in my video's, I usually glue the material to the scrim foam. In this case, I just decided not to. Wonderful video. When you reattach the C clip material to the new fabric do you use a "back up" stitch there because of the tension there? I couldn't tell because of the video speed. Kind Regards. Craig
Great tip about leaving the pieces attached. I wonder how many people sew for a living that tell you how to do upholstery?? If you ever get the chance, I would be super interested in seeing a video on reupholstering a Dodge Sebring bucket seat that has the seat belt assembly attached to the top of the seat back next to the headrest on the window side of the seat. That "tower" looks intricate. If you have experience with them, any things to look out for such as plastic parts breaking that are not obtainable or worse?

Would you glue the scrim to the fabric or vinyl you’re using for the seat? I noticed you don’t glue it, is there a reason why? I’ve been working on my Honda Ridgeline seats, but the drivers seat needs foam work in the seat and back bolster areas and I’m not sure what density of foam I should use. I really enjoy your talent. I usually use a higher density foam for seat repairs to help hold a better shape. Or medium density as you see here of the seat insert areas for comfort. @@MalcolmProductions1 Hello Malcom, When a car has airbags in the seats, I never unplug that yellow air bag wire. I do all the work inside the car without removing the seats. I never wanted to put my paying customer through the pain of getting their air bags reset. Some say that you just undo the battery, but that's not 100%. I need it to be 100% for a happy customer. WOW, you make it look so easy. The reason its dying is because we live in a throw away society. Your art, is just like shoe repair. Im 51, i can apperciate your craftsmanship. I also worked at a Lincoln / Mercury new car dealership. I would always be back in the upolustry area. The work you artist do is amazing. I would watch these guys do repairs, to install vinyl tops on Town Cars and Grand Marquis. If i wasnt exposed to that atmosphere, i dont think i would apperciate what you do. Like you said, throw a seat cover on it and go. I had a simular repair done on my wifes Ford Focus a few years ago. She didnt understand ,why i would take it to be repaired. She picked the car up, and thought she had a new seat. She looked and looked. Flawless repair. Another great video. Happy New Year my friend.

I have found a hacksaw blade works just as well on sourdough bread as it does on foam. To get the perfect French stitch, you have to say things like chateau, cherie, and mon ami, otherwise, they looked perfect to me. Glad to see you're back to it, enjoy the freedom of no rent money burning away.

I think the secret in your French stitch is that your first stitch is through 2 layers of material and also 2 layers of foam with the bullet proof scrim backing. Strong sewing thread going through 2 layers of that will never pull apart.

After 43 years of doing your job, I know I am not telling you anything you don't know, but for the young guys, there is a tool that can be had for about $8.00 that pops those c-clips off super simple like. There are two sizes, the smaller one for that clip you did in this video and the larger clips used on window cranks. Some of the young guys may not have ever used a window crank.. LOL Love your work! If you keep making videos, I will keep watching them!

Richard you are completely right you can use a hack saw blade. Ive actually used a hack saw blade in a pinch. My personal preference is a band saw its quick and straight. I do this for a living and no matter how much I watch all the upholstery videos they never get old and i always seem to get more information out old videos ive watched. Thank you

Superb work and video. It's "symmetrical" as one side is the mirror image of the opposite side. "Asymmetrical" means that one side is not the mirror image of the other side (e.g. one cannot use use side to create the pattern for the opposite side. The prefix "a" before a word signifies that it is the antonym of the root word.)

Due to your great videos, I'm beginning to think I can make my own seat covers! I have several 70's cars that I'm going to need new seat upholstery, and it would probably cost a fortune to pay an auto upholstery shop to do them. The patterns on my seats are much simpler than that seat you just did, so I think it would be worth it to find a good used sewing machine and try it myself. I've installed seat covers and foam, headliners and door panels on 55-57 Chevys in my restoration work, so I have some experience installing. Now I'll try making them, thanks to you!

Rn im 7years into the trade as an apprentice. The maestro got me doing all the vehicles and helping him maintain his business upfloat doing orders amd calling customers to meeting other business owners. From 1920s to modern. Im well experienced. The only thing is i get so busy doing the other stuff that i cant seem to catch up to learn to sow at the shop itself or the man dont wanna teach me lowkey..deciding to just buy my own machine this year i dont wanna think bad but i do have a feeling if i learn i will end up putting my own maestro outta business cause i have more to offer than the man i also do deep detail, starlights, currently learning car wraps, restoration work etc....Everything with time.

Great content i just repaired my silverado seat and i gotta say pretty much the same thing and also nice French stitch my pops always did it like that and thats how i do it but if a customer wants to pay more sure i will do it there way lol but untill then im sure mine will hold up just fine thanks for the video have a good day Richard

I agree with classic vehicles like my 1967 C10 it has those clips in the door handle and window crank, from back when hu-manual windows were standard and power windows we options or not available. I have those two tools, too. They do have a defect the hook method seemed to avoid. When I press the special tool, as the in-structions say (the strange words and pictures 🤔), the little metal clips go flying. As VGG Derek likes to say, "I'll never see that again!" Lol. I learned to place my palm on the opposite side to block its' launch into obit. What way do you catch your crank handle lock clip? 🫣

Suggestion. 🫡 Have you done a demonstration of covering wood, metal, or plastic dash inserts and panels (even whole metal dashes 1913 to 1970s, mostly) in vinyl or leather?
For example, in a situation where it was not made that way from the factory but would look better and a custom touch. Possibly match other upholstery like seats and door cards. Thanks.

Hello Steve, Thanks pal! As you may have seen in my video's, I usually glue the material to the scrim foam. In this case, I just decided not to. Great tip about leaving the pieces attached. I wonder how many people sew for a living that tell you how to do upholstery?? If you ever get the chance, I would be super interested in seeing a video on reupholstering a Dodge Sebring bucket seat that has the seat belt assembly attached to the top of the seat back next to the headrest on the window side of the seat. That "tower" looks intricate. If you have experience with them, any things to look out for such as plastic parts breaking that are not obtainable or worse?

I’ve been working on my Honda Ridgeline seats, but the drivers seat needs foam work in the seat and back bolster areas and I’m not sure what density of foam I should use. I really enjoy your talent. I used to reupholster wheel chairs for handicap peoples 40 yrs ago.

Hello Malcom, Thank you so much for saying so. My thing is, I never unplug the yellow seat air bag wire when working on my customer vehicles. Some commenters do not agree with this. @@MalcolmProductions1 Hello Malcom, When a car has airbags in the seats, I never unplug that yellow air bag wire. I do all the work inside the car without removing the seats. I never wanted to put my paying customer through the pain of getting their air bags reset. Some say that you just undo the battery, but that's not 100%. I need it to be 100% for a happy customer.
