I'm 20. Watching RUclips has been a part of my life since I was 12, so I've grown up falling in love with my favorite channels... In the beginning it was the Vlogbrothers, Wheezywaiter, Dan and Phil, Shane Dawson, you guys, etc. It felt like such a special place to be, we all sort of existed in this specific internet culture and it was definitely a safe space. Now in 2019 I still, STILL feel that community here, and right now my favorite corner to hang out in is GMM (and affiliated channels). It's such a gift to me. We all get happiness from different things, I know. It's a little sad to know you never experienced the silly joy of binge-watching your favorite youtubers all day, all by yourself, to the point where you almost feel like you know them. It's been such a wholesome part of my life. Seeing you guys grow as a channel and change over time is honestly kind of a blessing. I think mainly though, you two are the ones with your lives together, and I'm the one with three menial part-time jobs trying to produce 3x the $1400 rent in income of the 400 sq. ft. apartment I want to be qualified for and somehow ending up at a starbucks watching GMM for hours on my day off when I could be developing my career so really, I don't think you guys are the ones with the problem
I personally think that had a lot to do with helping out some friends and trying to create an atmosphere of “mythical generosity” in the community of creators they associate with. To kind of push creators to support each other rather than being divisive. Granted also I think a major part of it was a business opportunity- I’m certain Smosh could have eventually supported themselves, but R&L floating them offered extra income for GMM even though there was a large deposit made on that investment.
I don’t even know if y’all see these comments anymore but I’m exactly your age (class of ‘96, yo!) and whenever I want to watch something, RUclips is practically all I watch. I started watching it to educate myself because of the surprising amount of beneficial information on there. I’ve watched things about foraging wild edibles, creating and using herbal medicine, identifying beneficial mycological species, homesteading, various crafting tutorials like lampworking glass, sculpting with polymer clay, just whatever floats my boat. I’m huge into health and nutrition, too, so I’ve found and watched hours and hours and hours of science on that topic, too. I tend to find a channel and binge watch ALL of their videos. Then I happened to find y’all with your 1600+ episodes on GMM, then Good Mythical freaking MORE, then Ear Biscuits, then the old Rhett and Link music videos, Buddy System 1 and 2,...so I guess you’ve captured the next 4 years of my life as I gradually catch up (and watch whatever else you put out). I know this one is super old, but I’m relistening to past episodes to make sure I’ve heard them all. You mentioned long form content and documentaries. I watch a lot of historical documentaries on RUclips. Some of them are a few hours long, and most of them are parts of larger projects. I also love the new documentary style episodes Ask A Mortician is putting out. Additionally, I’ve been watching a lot of defunctland lately. I’m no critic by any means, but I feel like the production on both of these is pretty incredible for free content.
I love how Link goes into a twenty minute story of sorting mail and Rhett is totally along for the ride, and as soon as Rhett starts taking Link is like 'Did you learn that on RUclips?'
Endgame was 3 hours long, and it seemed to be a good length. I watched the play "Dracula" at my local theatre, and it was 4:30 long. That seemed a bit too much.
Dig the FoTC reference, but y'all are on a different level compared to them. I don't mean better or worse, just different. You two, Hamish and Andy (Aussie comedy duo) and FotC (NZ comedy duo) are some of my favourite duos from history of all media types. I'm subscribed to all of y'all btw, but only one of them wish me a good mythical morning everyday. But I would love to hope to see either of the duos on GMM at some point.
