Without the housings they connect perfectly, but the LCD's backdoors DON'T fit with the Hero 3's housing. This is probably a Go Pro's business (evil) strategy to get me to buy new housings. What alternatives do you think I have, other then trying to sell the LCD back?

Ive got the silver hero 3 camera, and although the LCD touch bac pac says compatible, the back touch screen CASE is not. It is smaller. SCreen works fine however the back case is too small.

OK, I have just checked and the screen CAN be removed from the GoPro Hero 3 and 3+ during recording without stopping the recording. You can just pull it off and stick it on again and the camera continues without a hitch. Thanks for the question - you have taught me something today, which can't be a bad thing! B
BUT .... You cannot use the LCD screen or the battery pack on the hero3+ UNLESS you have an older hero 3 CASE. I bought my first gopro camera which was a 3+ black edition only to find they haven't made deeper doors to fit the smaller 3+ cases to accommodate the screen or batterypack.
I just purchased the "special edition" LCD BacPac for the Hero 3+ and it came with the older Hero 3 case included, with the extended skeleton and touchscreen backdoors. You also get the "flat" skeleton and waterproof backdoors for using the Hero 3+ in the Hero 3 case without the BacPac attached to the camera.

I bought a 'Shoot' branded non-touch LCD display (from Amazon) for my Go Pro Hero 3+ and it came with a deeper section waterproof rear housing to allow for the thicker camera & display. Didn't fit at all. It was too big by at least 2mm, the hinge point was nowhere near where the original should be and it was too big to fit within the front housing so wouldn't close at all.

Sorry - the 3+ casing is not compatible with the back doors for the LCD Touch BacPac. If you buy the BacPac screen to use with a 3+, you'll need to get a spare housing for the original 3 as well so that all the doors will fit it.

+whufc08 - 40 meters is rating of the standard housing. If you are diving to 40 meters this is very limit of the standard housing, and I would recommend using the dive housing, this is good to 60 meters. Buy a deep dive now on amazon, these are out of stock on GoPro's site and rumors are they might be discontinued.

What is the latest firmware to run this lcd touch for GoPro Hero 3 black? I just have my new LCD but it's not working. It's making a sound but no video.
The screen operates based on the camera's own firmware.... different cameras display different buttons and menus on the screen, and have different functionality. It just acts as a screen for previewing, playback and settings and does what the camera tells it to do.
Yes it does. I have used it with the Hero 4 black, and it works fine. It has a different menu from the Hero 3 and 3+, which is appropriate for the extra features on the 4.

Good review, barring the omission that the case backs that come with the LCD BacPac which fit the Hero 3 case, WILL NOT fit on the Hero 3+ case.

YHD517L is only for Hero 2 and 3. Probably incompatible firmware, because this is non touch screen!
