  • Widely Acclaimed ITV Lost Treasures Documentary on the Vikings in the North West of England & Isle of Man, produced by Phil Hirst and Tom Holden of Planet X TV. Widnes, Cuerdale, the Halton Viking Cross, Heysham Hogback, Tynwald & the Manx Viking Festival, Meols, West Kirby Hogback, Thingwall, Brunanburh/Bebington Heath and a possible Dingesmere (Heswall Point) location. Intrepid Archaeologist Mark Olly and Steve Harding go in search of Viking Treasure. 1st broadcast on ITV1, Thursday 1st September 2005 at 7.30pm (& later extensively repeated on the History Channel), it was recorded after the recent identification by Steve & his colleagues of Dingesmere = Things mere in the epic 10th century poem The Battle of Brunanburh. Bebington Heath is explored as the site of the battle. Includes excellent re-enactment by the warriors of the Wirhalh Skip Felagr and weapons demonstration/ battle tactics by Mike Loades.
The broadcast includes the Viking Hogback at West Kirby (dated to ~1000AD) and closes with music from the 8 - 9 string Hardingfele (Harding fiddle) - the National Instrument of Norway (played by the Hardingkvartetten)- and reference to the ongoing genetic survey of men from old Wirral and West Lancashire families.... and ends with a poignant reminder to Mark!.

Any documentary using a Nightwish song for its title music gets my approval.... I'm from Oldham, apparently the town was established by Vikings, don't know what they would think of it these days...

@Tommy Badman Thanks Tommy. Absolutely right about the Norman descent. In fact when I was a youngster in the 60's and early 70's there was a footballer Fred Molyneux who played for Southport and then played in Ron Yeats' Tranmere Rovers side. Possibly some relation? When we did the Wirral & West Lancashire Viking DNA project with Leicester based on the male Y-chromosome from men with surnames in the area prior to 1600 I dont think we had a Molyneux volunteer come forward from either area even though it was on our list (there was a Molyneuz paying taxes in Wirral in 1542) - the full list is in the Viking Mersey book.

Some viking kids as young as 12 had ships and men to command. -all free men if called to raid or war had to go serve their jarl or king. Even many slaves fought beside their master.

the guy in the robe wants to paint another picture of the vikings as integrators but they violently took possession of the land and enslaved people and the fact that they then were civil was only because you can't carry on like that or you'll be continually at war with the surrounding population who will probably at some stage overthrow you it was the same with the romans. The whole 'they were really nice guys because they were nice to their children or dogs or something doesnt absolve them from the attrocities.

does anyone know if the vikings that settled on the wirral and merseyside pre battle fought against the english? or were they neutral? it seems logical that they would never have been thankful for their lands or taken the safe option and most likely fought against the english.

what is the supposed purpose of studying Viking attacks and invasions? what were the significant advancements Vikings brought to the areas subject to their aggression? improved infrastructure? superior education opportunities? improved healthcare? an electrical grid? What did countries who were not subject to Viking aggression and imperialism miss out on? Viking treasure should be viewed the same as stolen Nazi Art.

The Vikings in NW England & Isle of Man was more of a peaceful settlement, co-existence and integration, and of course there were battles (Chester AD902 - see Lost Treasures III - , & as it seems from the film, also Brunanburh AD937). And sure, although Vikings had a bit of a bad press (a lot was Anglo-Saxon propaganda) they were great democrats with their Things or Assemblies - e.g, the Wirral & Isle of Man Things in the film - they were great craftsmen with their incredible clinker boats and ships, and women had a much more elevated position in Norse Society (e.g. in NW England, evidence of women landowners and Moneyers), and even the word Law is Norse in origin

@@nationalcentreformacromole5145 so it was all bad press? if the Vikings had a better PR firm their crimes would be dismissed because they built nice boats and allowed women some rights. Seriously? what rights did the women during Viking attacks have? or those who were made slaves or put into the sex trade? next you will tell me the Waffen SS were all just Volkswagen salesmen who behaved badly from time to time and got some bad write ups in the news.
