Bro
Orion is for 150v plus bms
They are expensive and u cant connect in series regular bms it won't work
Im 66, AND TRYING TO BUILD OUT MY RIG ! and your videos are so helpful to me !!! and your beginner's book also !! AND like I said last video , I would enjoy any video you do EVEN about the PHONE BOOK !! HA !
I have a Daly BMS Li-ion the low temp disconnect was set to - 40 deg C adjusted and it works you need software to adjust the setting
Did you request low temp disconnect specifically when you ordered it or it came standard with it?
@@wraymedia3324 Gday Will
No it came with it it is set to -40 by default
It is in the configuration software
I tested mine at 17 deg on the bench and it worked
If intrested l can send screen shot of configuration page
@@johnonlyonknobbies Thanks for confirming! Yes please send a screenshot if you have a chance
Thanks Will👍 “5 different answers” is standard with some sellers! That’s why you’ve become a major Go to guy for honesty. Never change sell out or stop being you. ✌️
Thank goodness your now doing BMS's ... as always excellent video - and no small animals got hurt ... as for BMS I would think that it would require an EXTERNAL Temperature probe to do it right ...
Exactly!! And attached to the cells. And multiple sensors. I agree!
DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse are you saying there is no port to connect a temp sensor to on those BMS’s?
@@tjenkens There is NOT. These Dalys and 99% of all BMS is using a throwback design for Lead Acid and AGM batteries. They are NOT programmed or designed with temperature in mind at all. BUT if someone does come out with a Temperature controlled variant then it SHOULD be controlled and monitored with a EXTERNAL temp probe since the BMS itself will - due to its very design - stay probably 10 degrees warmer from pushing all the electrodes ...
Chk my reasoning for me. I have a Victron 150/85 and a BMV712. I’ve built my own battery with balancers 8 cells 4/pairs of 2 for 200AH my plans for battery protection are low voltage disconnect module with 12V 200amp solenoid and thermostatically controlled heating pad with temp sensor for alarms in the monitor My Victron should protect against overcharging so as long as I keep my temp sensor connected to the smart monitor will compensate for temp changes. Am I good?
I'd like to suggest when you do order their BMS, order it under an assumed/different name, so you can be sure you're getting a normal/standard production model.
Fröhliche Weihnachten
He's the best.
Good thinkin 👍
Yup - been having the same thoughts 👍
Thanks William its great to have a true advocate out here who cares about the little guy trying to make life work for themselves on a small budget.
Much appreciated buddy.
This young man is a very good educator. Thank you Will.
Like most of your viewers I will not trust the supplier but I will trust you. Thanks again for your hard work
Thank you for your dedication, the information you gather is extremely valuable, not only to Mr Everyday Joe, but to the licensed professional like myself.
Man, u are the best. A yt channel u can really rely on, u are professional, express urself clearly and give awesome interesting content. Fuckin love u , keep it up. U inspire me to keep building electrical systems.
Hoping that you will someday do a "DIY BMS FROM SCRATCH" tutorial.
Hey Will, the Daly BMS actually has low-temp cutoff, but u have to set it in the app to the correct temperature
out of the box it comes setup at -40°C which as u way too low for Lifepo4
hope this helps
Do ALL Daly bms have bluetooth? I bought a 250a bms and there's only a port for the balance cables. there's no ports on the side for anything else to connect into it?
As usual, a great unbiased opinion strictly out of the desire to do the right thing.
If I am ever back out at Nellis, I will buy you lunch.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks man I would have never thought to not believe it if it's written on paper but thanks a lot
The lack of low temperature disconnects has been my only complaint with an otherwise rather nice BMS. This is a real issue when using them in solar powered out buildings in winter. I'm eager to hear the results of the new purchases (before I buy again!). Thanks for another great video.
Thanks William. We’ll have to call you the Battery Bobby for all the sterling work you do protecting us from electrickery.
Hi Will, your videos are awesome
My bad for not checking before I bought their 200ah BMS. Thank you for confirming.
I use a 4S 12v 80A Daly BMS all works as Will said, but I have looked everywhere for the fault I have. The app installed ok, but after x mins (30-60) I get a message "Device disconnecting" and an OK button. I reconnect sometimes works, but if I leave it for a while the App can no longer see the Daly BMS.
If I now disconnect the batt harness for 10 secs and reconnect the app displays the daly bluetooth ID and works again for a while.
So all works well, until when I want to check later the app can not see the Daly ID.
Nice channel Will.
Bravo!!!! Ur the best. U ask the best questions that we want to asks. ty for teaching me everything about everything I want to know about energy.
I am definitely following your advise and adding a separate low temp disconnect. Thx!
Dont you have to connect an external ntc sensor for that function to work?
Does this video have a followup?
Any update on the 24v low temp status?
Thank you Will.
I just received my Daly 100-amp common port BMS and it does not have low temperature cut off. In the overview & specs it says it does. I emailed them and they responded with that yes it's in the specs but you have to request one with that option. Should last price with & without.
Great can't wait to see if it is so, merry Christmas, happy holidays
Thanks for information about lithium in cold temperatures. It’s -30 Celsius here right now. Seriously. It sucks, and someday having an electric snowmobile would be cool.
LTO, my dude.
" how confusing it is for me" - Will, welcome to the world of online shopping.
Welcome to AliXpress World and their products....They only 'make product' and 'sell cheap' but don't know how to sell....that job belongs to Amazon.
A 3:58 video doesn't give you much time to cut anything apart. Love your videos,,,, even when something isn't destroyed!
Nice video on this. My guess would be the older model doesn't have the low temperature cut off but the newer models do. The problem is that the vendors are buying in such bulk that the newer model with this feature might not be available until the older models are sold through at each particular vendor. So some might have the newer model sooner than others depending on their sell through volume. This might be when they change the data sheet. Some vendors may say it looks the same and not update their data sheets too. Broken English is a real good indicator that some item details could be different not out of malice but plain ignorance. Keep up the good work.
Great video and attitude. Thanks for making these, they are super informative
I know this video was posted a long time ago, but was there a follow up video when the one he ordered came in? And isn't there a temperature sensor that has to be plugged in? It's the cell temperature that matters, not the BMS temperature, so I'm not surprised that chilling the BMS had no effect. The plugged in temperature sensor on the cells has to get cold. Or so I would assume. I don't have a Daly BMS, yet.
Of course even if low temperature cutoff was supported that doesn't excuse the poor communication and documentation.
You may not get the newest BMS,I am quite clear about the low-temperature function, they developed the function due to our requirement ,we placed the 100 units at one time,so they took two months to develop, and the protection temperature is -5 degree.
Hi William, perhaps one way to protect from charging in low temperature is to connect an external low temperature cutoff switch on the positive signal cable connected between a Daly BMS and Cell 4. If the contact between the BMS and cell4 breaks, charging stops.
As someone mentioned earlier, maybe a Kemet TRS3-0MCR01 for 0 ° C can be connected as a cutoff switch.
Another video idea is how to protect LifePO4 batteries from being over charged, can we trust a cheap Daly BMS?
I just got a new one of these and it went down to 0C / 32F last night and this morning I went out to find... 0 voltage coming through from my solar array! Totally freaked me out at first, then I realized what must be going on because my inverter was showing 24.8V (and I confirmed this at the battery terminals with my multimeter) from running a small heater overnight. So I knew the batteries were fine, but the negative (black) on the BMS was showing 0V. That's when I remembered the low-temp disconnect feature that was listed on eBay when I bought this module... I do believe it's working as intended. When it warms up a little I'll know for sure.
And this is how you test it!!!! keep up the great work.
Will, do you know if there is a manual for the bluetooth app on a daly smart bms.
I understand most of the features but not all.
Eric
Will! Have you been able to test this on the Daly SMART BMS? In the documentation for the rs485 protocol I at least found a reference to a “charging temperature to low alarm”
Will. I watch your video after I had order the Daly BMS and with battery cells already installed , just like you have. I used the bluetooth app to check if stop charging when the thermisitor was inside of iced glass water and mine shows it stop charging. I don't know when you buy the daly BMS by itself has the parameters need to to stop charging when it reaches a certain temperature. These are custom set. Have you check the preset factory parameters? Thanks
If it has temp protection at that price level, that would be a game changer
It's hard for me to believe that it would be so hard to add, either for the manufacturer or for a hobbyist with a BMS lacking the feature. All these BMSes have cutoff for high-temperature via a -reed switch- bimetallic spring, so...what the fuck?
Hi Will, awesome videos! Just wondering if there was any update on the daly bms with the low temp cut off? If not is there another 12v 4s4p 300amp bms you would recommend?
Hi. What can you say about balancing process on Daly? Is it working properly? I just order it , and while waiting to receive it, I saw some not nice reviews about Daly balancing process. Thanks for any advice.
Hi Will quick question. 1 Battle born or two 230 APH golf cart batteries. No new charger. I will be using this one, it’s a 3 stage charger WF-8735 it’s the one that came with the travel trailer. You are doing awesome thank you keep kicking ass and taking names.
I'm not Will, but I don't think you can charge LiFePO4 batteries with a charger designed for AGM/flooded lead acid batteries. Progressive Dynamics makes a wfco module replacement for LiFePO4 batteries that supposed can drop in to your power center.
vibrolax Thank you for the information I really appreciate it. But I thought battle born said it can be a drop in replacement even with existing three stage charger, it just would not charge fully or something like that.
@@mrsmith324 Yes, your information is correct. The existing charger will work, but the LiFePO4 battery will not be fully charged.
@@vibrolax thank you.
Quick question, was your NTC thermistor connected to the bms? I have no experience with daly, but the newer models I see on Aliexpress have a port marked NTC.
Thank you Will for great info.
nice information to know thanks for testing stuff and sharing with us
Hello, it was a very useful video. I hope you can help me. I have a similar BMS, but with a fan design. All I have to worry about is that the installation doesn't work and now I keep feeling that I'm measuring with 37 Amps, while nothing is connected to the batteries, if I connect something, I can do it if I charge or discharge, the 37 Amps will remain. Can you help with 0 Amper callibration?
Hurray for doing the legwork for us
Please do a DIY BUILD TUTORIAL!!!
I ordered the 100A 12 V on November 29th and it just came today. Once I wire it up i can test it out, fingers crossed! Low temp cutoff would be great
Update: mine does not appear to have a temp cutoff. I hooked up the BMS and tested it warm and then put it in the deep freeze for an hour, it continued to charge
how does it work? does daly BMS 2port can solar charge and battery discharge at the same time?
Did the new one work? I can't find the test video?
Do I have to use all the wires? IF I purchased a 14S bms. will it also work on 12S?
Sorry for such a dumb question.
I have 2 12S batteries and looking for a great BMS to charge quickly. I plan on discharging quickly with a Battery Protect. Viton brand?
Hi Will, Thanks again for another excellent and informative video. I hope the new Daly BMS DOES have low temp cut off, but if not or until then, what do you think of either either a low temp cut off or low temp heater mat circuit?
Great advice
Thank you so much for all your information. Have you investigated Tesla Powerwall?
hi, can i use a 16s 250 lifepo4 daly bms too build a 4s Setup? only Software change too 4s over bluetooth?
have you tested the latest model yet
Did you ever test a new version?
Did you get the supposedly temp controlled one and test it?
Do you recommend to also use a dependent balancer?
Daly most definitely does have low temperature protection, but the temperature has to be below the temperature cutoff you set in the program. What did you set the cutoff as? If you did not change it, many times, depending on firmware it is set well below 0 C
Have you tested Cheap BMS on Ebay Apex 4s 12v 100A? I do not think they can handle 100A as the terminals are too small and PCB traces too small. If you have a good BMS do you need a Charge Controller for Solar?
Annething new about this? And is Daly really a good and relliable bms? Have seen some comments that says it only last like a half year.. My goal is to hopfully make the ebike batteri last 8-10years
Hey Will, have you seen anything to suggest that the blue-wrapped Aluminum rectangular case LiFePO4 cells (like in your video here) are not good quality? Just curious if your recommendation for them still stands? Everything I've seen so far indicates they do conform to spec.
So far they are great. I don't like the bus bars or mounting options in my previous tests of those cells, but besides that they work well
I was looking at the current model LIFePO4 24V 100A BMS, and the temperature protection on the data sheet doesn't make sense now... they list it as "Charge: -20~55C Discharge: -40~75C". I have no idea if this means at certain low temperatures it wont charge/discharge at all, or if it means that it will charge it. Google tells me that I shouldn't charge LiFePO4 at or under 0C. 🤷♂
Any update on the new Daly model, does it have low temp diconnect?
Yes, but it will only work when the temperature is less than the cutoff temperature. Default setting many times depending on firmware is less than 0C. Will listen to the company!!! ;)
hello can a daly li-ion BMS be programmed to use on lifepo4 cells ?
Guess you never got around to testing the new one?
THANK YOU WILL. TAKE CARE
Is this low temperature charge problem only for LiFePO or also for other Li-ion chemistry? And it is only for charging, not for drawing amps, right? If you have the battery stationary at home in the cellar or where ever i dont see a problem with low temp, if you dont live in alaska or the artic area...
If you have two 100ah batteries with a bms and connect them in parallel, does the max current then double? If they both have a 100A bms and are in parallel to make a 200ah bank, could you draw 200A and it would split it between the 2 bms units and not cause issues?
how can make an absorption with Daly smart BMS pls. ??voltage dropped after bms switching off due to reaching cut off preset voltage !!
How would the low-temp cutout work on the hybrid combined setups? If the battery disconnected itself under low-temp and full solar, how would the load cope etc? Is the hybrid controller left to manage the low-temp situation?
In your opinion what is the most reliable/best 1000w pure sine wave inverter?12v system 300ah bats 320w of solar.goin to use on lights, TV,phone chargers and electric blanket occasionally when needed on camping scenarios(not often but modified sine wave wont run blanket)
Have you ever tested for over current protection? I’ve seen you many times not use a fuse and say it’s fine because of the BMS. I tested 2 Daly BMS units today and neither seemed to have over protection. One 60amp BMS I pulled 72amps continuous, never shut off. I short circuited a 120amp BMS and it let the smoke out. I accidentally shorted out a 5 Battleborn battery bank with a wrench, all 5 instantly shut off.
72 amps "continuous" for how long? If it's rated for 60 continuous, it's probably something like 90A for 10 minutes, and 120A for 30 seconds. The numbers are just a guess, but the point is that it's not a hard cut-off at 60A on _any_ (non-programmable) BMS. Hope that helps.
Is it possible to purchase a cutoff switch to cut power to the battery when the temp is < 32F?
I'm looking to set a 3.2v cell system but I'm having a hard time getting a BMS with all the features it needs to run without keeping an constant eye on it....do u have any recommendations?I just bought ur book and waiting for it to be delivered
Does that new one have temp cut off?
Hi, I'm looking for a BMS with bluetooth with separate ports and I can't find it, can you recommend one? Thanks ..
Very insightful, thanks for sharing!
Have you received and tested the newer model?
can u do a cold weather solar/solar+wind setup for constant -20c weather? something with heating pads / wind energy dump load that heats the battery compartment?
Hi will, please do a video on Make Sky blue & powermr solar charge controller.
Hello Will, just a question: Kevin at Daly keeps saying that the low-T protection can be added upon request. But it is set to -7C? That is way too low, no?
Hi!
Can you help me with the choice of BMS. 14S 48V 100 - 150 amps with bluetooth monitoring. Need complete package with BMS and Bluetooth module
Regards
Petter
Wouldn't a BMS need an external temperature sensor for low-temp charging protection? As the BMS itself will get warm and stay warm if it's charging batteries?
Absolutely
Have you, or will you test the newer "Smart BMS" with bluetooth?
Does the daly bms‘s have a overload Protection and a Deepcycle Protection ?
So you haven’t seen a Daly smart BMS. Looking for decent wire, where do you get most of yours.
Not only LTO can be charged below 0. LiFeYPO4 Yellow Winston prismatic cells can be charged as low as -45 degree celsius datasheet says. Also LG INR18650-M29 2850mAh can be charged as low as -10 degree celsius.
I don't think he said "only" LTO. Also, has anyone actually used those Winston cells? Seems like a scam to me...
I ordered a Daly BMS and asked for low temp cut off, they said I could specify a cut off temp between -7°C and 0°C. Did you specify a temp? I wonder if the one you tested was set to -7°?
Have you considered reviewing/testing the PomCube iCan?
Hi i would like to ask what is the difference between separate and common port?? What should i use? i am planning to build a 48v 200ah lifepo4 battery (32 pcs of lifepo4 prismatic 100ah 3.2v) system, i have must mppt 80amp charger and 5000 watt inverter.. thank you in advance for the answer
I just get my 100 ah daly bms today, testing it and cant find my mistake. Battery is at 13,3 volt, same battery you use but eve 280ah. But at p- it shows 10,5 volt. I check the wireing and resistance for each line. I connect the blutoth adapor but no respond. I even dont know if its on.
Thanks for your awesomeness. You rock.
Great info!!
I have built a 4s battery 280AH/12v with a Daly BMS. The BMS JBD replaced with Daly 200A 4s are plaguing me. Daly passes gas for minutes, almost long enough to make a cup of coffee. I am using a 2500 W invert. Seems Voltage drops off below 10,V then 45 seconds later, restarts, and repeats the cycle. Seems there needs to be 1 authority on BMS (Daly, etc..) software. Admittedly, I am not a software people. Help? You got me interested in this, interesting challenge. thank you.
I looked at bms that look just like the ones you show, and on the ali express site they tell you the low temp protect is optional. but i did not ask how much they charge to add it.
