  • Nowadays Cade’s Cove is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. But before the park came into existence in 1934 it was a vibrant Appalachian community, with churches, schools, farms and, of course, moonshiners.
Today we tell the story of a run-in between a Primitive Baptist preacher and the biggest moonshiner in Cade’s Cove.

With John Oliver coming from carter county area it makes sense why I say burchfields, rogers, roberts, tiptons and Wilson's in the cemetery at that 2 nd church by rich mountain road.
Many of those same family names are also buried at the bumpus cove cemetery which is located just south of erwin,tn along the banks of the nolichuky river. My 3 rd great grandparents Philip Sheridan Yates and his wife Eliza Chase are buried in that Bumpus cove cemetery located by the embreeville community.

Back in the 70's and early 80's they had a bunch of old pics blown up on a big covered doohickey (for lack of a better word) that showed 3 pictures of 2 of my great uncles (Tom and Jerry Hearon)running a still there in the cove.My descendants were Myers,Borings and Whiteheads from the cove and another little community even farther back called Rasor or Razar. We were ran out in 1934 by the park service and moved into what is now the Happy Valley community.Great story!

Ah! I found another one of your videos, and I'm listening while fixing supper. Cades Cove, is a legendary settlement in the Eastern Tennessee Appalachian Mountains. I've heard some excellent interview content, with Mr. John McAlluey. The interview was reel to reel, taken in 1960, the year before he passed (1880-1961) I imagine you're very familiar with Mr. McCauley. Excellent man to listen to tell his story❤️🙂
