I started learning Portuguese 11 years ago when I was 35 and now I'm fluent. Was it easy? No! But if you have passion for the language and a willingness to work at it and PRACTICE, you can learn any language. I will never be able to speak like a native Brazilian, but the purpose of learning a language is not to be perfect but to understand and be understood. Portuguese has opened so many doors for me so it was definitely worth it.
Todas essas línguas empregam tempos verbais quase exatamente da mesma forma (incluindo o subjuntivo). É bastante fácil para mim ler português, mas até aprender melhor o vocabulário português, é muito fácil escolher a palavra errada em francês, italiano ou espanhol.
@@ioanekirarahu951 I see what you’re saying but it is not easy for an English speaker to learn Portuguese. First, the grammar is totally different. English does not have conjugated verbs like the languages you just mentioned. Also, Portuguese has sounds that do not appear in English. Then there is the Brazilian slang which is an entirely different world all by itself.
@@djeanpierre You are right that English/American grammar and verb tenses are not like Portuguese.
But French, Italian, and Spanish verb tenses are indeed virtually identical to Portuguese verb tenses, in the overall way they are constructed. The grammar in general of these other Roman/Latin languages are also very similar, and predictable, once you are familiar with this family of languages in general. So if one is very familiar with these other languages, then Portuguese is therefore much easier to learn.
The question of vocabulary is always pretty much unique to the individual language and one's personal exposure, though there are still many similarities in Portuguese vocabulary to these other languages, though this is more of an advantage in understanding than it is in writing or speaking. So I guarantee you that if you know these other European Roman-Latin languages, Portuguese will be much easier for a gringo to learn.
I used to teach French at a university, and I also taught Polynesian dialects in a specialized language school. I also had a former wife who was French, and my oldest son (now 45) speaks French. He only heard French from me as well as from his mother until he was about five, when we got a call from his school teacher, so I then started to speak English to him, though his mother continued in French.
As far as sounds go, there is nothing that unusual in vocalizations in Portuguese that you don't meet also in these other languages. The French guttural "r" is found more or less in Portuguese in some words, as is also the Spanish rolled "r"-- a curious thing about spoken Brazilian Portuguese. French also has several nasal vowel sounds, similar, though not quite the same as in Portuguese.
Virginia's lessons are among the best as she teaches entirely in Brazilian Portuguese, so one has the opportunity to get used to hearing the vocal nuances of this beautiful language. She also enunciates very clearly. She is so pleasant to watch and listen to. I tip my hat to Virginia for her excellent teaching and format, which also includes much cultural exposure. So I am familiar with learning languages in general, and of the great value of immersion training.
Slang is a matter of exposure, and of feeling and using it/experiencing it naturally. Somehow, when you learn all the bad words or slang in one languages, it is not that hard also to learn it in another. In fact, some slang expressions in one language are virtually identical to the same slang expressions in another, though not all of course. Just remember when studying Brazilian culture, you had better know very well who Alberto Santos-Dumont is, and never argue about him. Besides, I have my Brazilian namorada to help me a lot with all that stuff, and to learn all the embarrassing words and expressions. Best to you.

Eu sou americano. Tenho setenta anos e estou aprendendo português. Mas é muito mais fácil quando você já fala francês, italiano e espanhol. Também é mais fácil quando você está namorando uma doce brasileira.
Tenho 65 anos e comecei a aprender o português há cinco anos. Aprendei na universidade e no seu canal. Hoje posso falar, enterder e ler romance. Sim, e possível mais me parecia muito difícil!

Thank you for this interesting video - and your enthusiasm which is infectious! I am 69 and just starting to learn Brazilian Portuguese - I notice a huge difference from my younger years in my capacity to retain what I learn! I prefer explicit learning, but have no opportunity to practise speaking, so implicit learning is also useful to reinforce the listening and pronunciation skills.
Great advice! I’ve been learning for 4 months both implicit and explicit. It really helps to know someone who is fluent who can help you. Watching Português language TV with Português subtitles is great. The key is practicing every day for 10-15 minutes. I’m 58 and finding it much more enjoyable than when I was in high school because I really want to learn.

I think people get way too hung up on the word fluent. Not even native speakers know every word or correct way to use them.. we are humans and mistakes happen. Relax and enjoy the ride people!

I began learning - from zero - Spanish at the age of 36, some thirty-two years ago, now. At 51 I moved to Spain and, after sixteen years there, (and during which I often forgot in which of my two languages I was communicating) I've recently settled in Colombia. My study of Spanish has been greatly helped by working as a translator of fiction into English, this particularly in respect of broadening my vocabulary; everyday conversation with Spanish speakers tends to be quite repetitive (as daily conversation is in any language) and uses a generally restricted vocabulary.
I've just begun studying Portuguese, having always wondered whether a 'third' language would be easier to learn now I have the experience of understanding the size and shape of 'the forest' I met when setting out with Spanish. As someone else mentions below, a good knowledge of Spanish certainly helps with the learning of grammar in Portuguese, and because of this knowledge, I've quickly begun reading original Portuguese texts daily. Fiction is always the most difficult, I find, of written materials, because of fundamental element in normals is the use of ambiguity. (Nevertheless, the beautiful simplicity of a novel such as 'Vidas secas', by Graciliano Ramos, is already providing useful in deepening my vocabulary study.)
What works best for me is reading articles in Portuguese-language newspapers, which can be read in five or ten minutes and therefore don't test the powers of concentration (of this 'old dog') for too long; watching videos posted on RUclips by DW Brasil, for example, many of which are 5 to 10 minutes in length, is another excellent resource for exposure to 'naturally spoken' Brazilian Portuguese.
And at the end of the year I'm going to spend three months in Brazil in order to get some intensive practice in receiving and producing the spoken language.

You have a great channel for teaching Portuguese. I think it is a language people can learn at any age, and probably one of the easier languages to learn for anyone, and especially with any Latin grammar or Latin vocabulary (like English) background. I enjoy learning from your channel, too. It would be cool to add some song lyrics from Pagode, Forro, and Sertanejo. Brasil has a lot of music, and it could add another aspect. When I started Portuguese grammar in college, it was interesting to learn from poetry.
Eu li em algum lugar que a aprendizagem de uma língua estrangeira adia, por cerca de cinco anos, a manifestação da doença de Alzheimer, o pesadelo da minha geração da terceira idade.
Já assustado com a possível visita do respeitado senhor Alzheimer, decidi tomar umas rápidas e sérias medidas a fim de começar a aprender uma língua estrangeira. Seguindo as recomendações da informação sobre a melhoria da aprendizagem duma língua estrangeira, decidi que o tema da minha aventura linguística devia ser uma língua difícil e complicada, como o Português, por exemplo.
Anunciei a minha decisão revolucionária à minha querida esposa, esperando o seu firme apoio. “Não quero debater sobre a tua saúde mental” disse, “mas acho que seria melhor passares mais tempo com o nosso aspirador de pó, do que com o teu computador”. Continuou a picar cebolas e eu saí para a livraria para comprar um dicionário e gramática de português.
A minha linda filha disse-me que a minha decisão era muito interessante. No entanto, eu tinha a impressão de que ela estava a pensar mais sobre a possibilidade de comprar uns novos sapatos do que sobre o meu progresso intelectual. (Meu Deus. Ela tem tantos sapatos como seja uma centopeia).
Os meus amigos no clube de pensionistas pararam o seu jogo de cartas e silenciosamente estiveram a ouvir todos os detalhes sobre a minha decisão, olhando para mim como que eu fizesse xixi. Então vieram os comentários: porquê português, (ninguém o fala), porquê não chines, ou, digamos francês? Os chineses já conquistaram o mundo com a sua roupa e francês é tão “sexy” (O francês mencionou uma simpática senhora da minha idade e deu-me uma olhadela significativa).
Apesar de todos os cometários da minha amada família e dos meus queridos amigos, eu comecei a aprender português. Porém, tive que aprender sozinho, pois não há escolas ou cursos de português na nossa cidade, nem o português é ensinado em nossa universidade. Aprendi escrevendo pequenos textos e implorando aos nativos que os corrigissem para mim. Já tenho algumas centenas deles. Também escrevi sobre o idioma e então se você não os acha chatos, eu os enviarte-ei. E,sim! Tenho agora 81 anos e ainda distingo os verbos ser e estar. 🧐

Muito obrigado. Agora tenho 74 anos e estou aprendendo o português. Mas antes de começar a estudar português já falava espanhol italiano francês catalão e latim. Acho que há muitas semelhanças entre catalão e português. Além passei umos dias no Portugal e comecei a falar depois de um ou dois dias. Agora estou nos Estados Unidos e preciso adaptar ao português do Brasil

I very much enjoy your channel and have taken advantage of the many videos you share on You Tube. Thank you! I am a 64 year old English speaker and have gained an intermediate level of fluency in German and Russian over the years working and living in Russia and Switzerland. I retired now to the interior of Ceara and studying Portuguese using Rosetta Stone and other online programs. (A challenge here in the rural Ceara is the 'Cearese dialect' which is what I hear all around me. It is a very unusual Portuguese and not much help in immersion!) It has been proven that language learning is a great way to keep your brain active and to help ward off cognitive degeneration with aging.... another good reason to learn a language as an adult. I look forward to Portuguese Week!!

Talvez seja mais facil para um jovem memorizar e lembrar vocabulário e seus vários usos no idioma. Meu idioma nativo é espanhol, eu aprendi inglês nos EUA quando tinha 23 anos e agora que estou aposentado estou aprendendo o português. Não acredito que você vá falar como um nativo brasileiro, mas eu posso me comunicar agora de um jeito bastante bom. Obrigado pela sua ajuda.

Thank you for this video. I've been inconsistent with my learning because of a busy life schedule but I really do want to learn Portuguese for a close friend and I'm trying to find better habits to just learn the language even if I do it slowly.

Much cognitive research has focused on the role of physiological stimulation in forming strong nerve cell linkages. Think of the studies that force college students into a “pretend-dangerous” situation-like walking together or separately over a rickety bridge versus a control group that sits on couches. The students are given various post-event tasks to test cognitive skills (adding some numbers) or asked about likelihood of asking the peer on a date. Invariably, the quote/unquote “scary” event produces better cognition and more exchanged phone numbers (IG handles nowadays, lol?) Putting this into practice, I listen to “Cafe de Manha” or “CNN/Brazil” on Spotify-or maybe one of your audio podcasts on I-Tunes while I am doing my wind-sprints on the bicycle. I am 63 and I guess that is when the *MOST* blood is flowing to the brain! I think music has the same effect and for this reason I’ve been working on some Brazilian karaoke. Sadly, while my wife is OK with “Mania de Voce,” I am not sure how many more renditions of Melody’s “Barbie De Chapeu” or Azzy and Choices “Buzz Lightyear” she is going to tolerate before divorcing me! BTW, I have *just* started Part II of “O Bom Ditador.” Book I took me one year to read; let’s hope Book II goes faster! Ha!

Eu acho que esse aspecto da idade é muito importante, principalmente se a pessoa tem uma idade com as habilidades neurológicas que favorecem absorver coisas, memorizar e ser eficiente para comunicar. Para mim eu notei que as pessoas que estavam jovem como os adolescentes a adultos (16-50) parecem mais receptivos ao aprendizado de línguas. Mas, eu tenho certeza de que há exceções. Além disso, eu diria que o aprendizado explícito é a melhor maneira de desenvolver a sua compreensão, porque você está consciente e disposto a aprender e fazer os esforços necessários: ler, falar, ouvir, assistir a programas e viajar para o país que lhe interessa...

Aprendo muitas coisas quando cozinhando comida ou ouvindo música de país estrangeiro.
I, a German national, lived in the UK for several years. Was I fluent in English? Yes. Did I sound like a native? Hell no, I just had to say `hello` and everybody knew I was German.
Now I learn Portuguese because I want to move to Brazil next year. Will I fluent one day? I sure hope so. Near-native? Not feasible. But who cares? As long as I will be able to understand and participate in normal conversations, in natural speed and with all the common slangs, that is all that I will need.
Sure, I will never win a price for `over the top correctness in pronunciation and theoretical grammar`, but most native speakers (of any language) would not achieve that either :)

Me lembro quando eu era adolescente e comecei aprender o português e após outras línguas como o francês, o italiano ou o catalão. Com o passar do tempo achei que ia ter preguiça no aprendizado de outras línguas, por um lado deu certo, por outro necessitei de muita motivação para aprender outras línguas além das outras que eu ja mencionei. Agora estou aprendendo o alemão e estou aperfeiçoando meu francês e meu português. Não perço a esperança de aprender uma ou duas línguas mais. Levo mais de 30 anos aprendendo línguas (o inglês foi a premeira língua que eu aprendi após do espanhol que é a minha língua materna). Agora tenho 38 anos. Saudações do México.

Para te dizer a verdade, Virgínia querida, prefiro o aprendizado implícito. Tem a vantagem de permitir a adquisição de conhecimentos da língua através de uma metodologia que pode ser inventada pelo aluno. E por outro lado, é o jeito informal de aprender uma língua, resultando assim mais eficiente do que a adquisição de conhecimentos da língua do jeito explícito.

I wish I could actually talk with You. (or email) I moved to Curitiba, August 2 2022. ( actually came for 90 days with a return ticket and I am still here. ( now in Apucarana, Pr. : bought a Home/house, and deal with renewing my Federal ID every 2 years). I have no family here, not even one friend when I came, solely an ex-wife family who treated me really special. I studied at Tuiuti University for 15 months, with Professora Angela Zatti. She tells me daily how much I am improving and feels I am basically fluent. I feel like I am Not, even if I do speak somewhat fair at times. I come from a 3rd generation Spanish ( Spain) family, where Spanish was the only language spoken in my home/family life till I went to catholic school at 5. yet I do not speak Spanish fluently in any manner, just phrases and words. My son (1of 3), tells me Till I can fully think in Portuguese I will never be fluent ?? Sorry to have rambled.. Julio Rafael Villareal Júnior

.. from my experience i belive that the children till 12-13 years old can achive a level compared to natives, not before. I met a lot of guys after 13 years old talking with his mother accent eglish,
compared to the younger ones... and so on. It is just my opinion.

43 aqui e aprendendo. I’ve been fluent in 2 languages I’ve since forgotten. I think people get hung up on “fluency.” I think accent and flow are more important, but I’ve been surrounded by people who speak several languages and learn some of them late in life, for my whole life.
Is it harder? Yes. I believe it’s because we translate too much in our heads and kids don’t. Is it impossible? Not at all.
