I agree and get confused on what is indie, alternative, power pop, jangle pop, alt country, polka etc…ok maybe not polka. Regardless great picks. I have some of them in my collection and most of the others are definitely ones to obtain. I have a weak spot on 2000 to current bands and artists. Bonnie prince billie and the avalanche I have no clue on but will check out. R.E.M. best band of all time in my opinion. Great video!
R.E.M and The Flaming Lips enriched my life deeply. It doesn't matter when they didn't hit the spot for me.. because all the albums and songs and live performances that DID are seared into my life and heart.
Best American Band would make for a great video topic. My response to that question is always Los Lobos. They rarely get the buzz of others, but that is one of the most talented groups out there. “Kiko” is their best, but they have a bunch of really great albums. You really see the greatness when you see them live. They can literally play any style of music, and they excel at all of them. They haven’t sold as many albums as R.E.M., Wilco, or others, but they are my pick.

Silver jews are great. I have never heard of the Wrens before, will check them out. I have to admit that i really cannot appreciate the Strokes, their singer has such an annoying voice, so monotone. Early REM and Beck are great, no doubt. Wilco indie rock? I would have placed them in the country rock corner. And Slint is more math rock i guess, great record though. Ellioth Smith is also great. Flaming lips, not my piece of cake, too orchestrated to call it indie rock. My suggestion for an essential indie rock band would definitely be Sebadoh, especially their album Bubble & scrape, highly recommended!

Murmur is a perfect album and my favorite from REM
