    Two things to comment on.
    1) I'm happy that there was not another Acela incident.
    2) I think that you could get the controller to work with any 18v or less wall-wart. You would just need to connect the DC output from a usable wall-wart to the input of the controller.
    Good luck with the set and I'm looking forward to your modifications.

      Mehano I just looked up wasnt ever in the US technically only sold stuff through International Hobby Corp. Which made presidents choice train sets for Loblaws in Canada. I know IHC is only around til all stock in texas is sold off . other then that ihc is gone and mehano is just in competition with fleischmann,roco, hornby/rivarossi as well as Dapol etc. Only way id go for a mehano is the president choice ones or maybe see what is available but thats all id say about that.

    Again Harrison ,, I'd say its planned obscellance where id say that you and only a handful of peopie would be the only ones to pull a brand new set down and add some lubricant to them bits that are dry and will ware out quickly..Good to see you got it running good and they do bed in quite good after running them in.
    I once bought a Flying Scotsman brand new in the box and to my horror it was a tender driven loco and no where on the box said it was a tender driven loco. It did go like the clappers but every now and then the loco wheels would stop and be a tad hesitant but i was certainly dissapointed with hornby the makers and sold a year later and got $50 more than i paid for it.
    Again an awesome video so thanks heaps for sharing your knowledge with us. So thankyou.
    Cheers from John in Australia.

    As a person who lives in Europe, the first mehano I saw was a Thalys. And it was gloss plastic, meaning it’s cheap and not greatly detailed to expected levels in the world of today. (From my experience with modern model trains)
    And yes, I do have a lot of old stuff but they are, well old… and details were less back in the old days.
    So I don’t recommend buying modern day mehano trains but for starters it’s great!
    I’ve also heard that some are better than others so plz check before committing to a purchase.

    Bought the same one at the same price - the lack of gearing between the drive worm and the wheels seems to result in a bit of binding for me and it is noisy too.
    The locomotive doesn't start smoothly and roars off suddenly as you increase the power - again gearing would help. Okay for £40 in the UK but this set has since peaked at over £110 on Amazon!
    Apparently the derailing issue is also caused by third car body end fouling on tight curves -, check out the Sam's Trains review for details...

    $38 holy cow. I dont think you would see that anywhere. The fact they didnt oil it is not good But then again it is $38 train set. I never understood what them resistors for since ive never seen them on my locomotives except my proto 1000 because it has a LED. I think the wobble is from as you pointed out the screw studs that are rubbing against the drive system or the fact its not a good balance. I agree needs to be heavier.

    Oh, with that controller, you actually don't need to use the included wall wart. Any 16v 500mA AC output transformer with a compatible plug will work. Wall warts aren't proprietary.

  • @VestedUTuber
    @VestedUTuber 3 года назад +3

    Regarding cross-compatibility for HO scale, pretty sure that Marklin is _the only_ exception to that since their equipment is 3-rail. But even then it's not too hard to convert an older analog Marklin model to 2-rail since they run DC anyway (you're out of luck for the new stuff, though, since they pretty much went 100% digital for their main brand).

    • @dutch_gamer76
      @dutch_gamer76 3 года назад +2

      Actually, Märklin runs on AC, with the outer tracks not being insulated. I think you're referring to the old Trix Express which used 3-rail DC.

    After bwing away from train models for long enough, my Father decided to re-entry the hobby with some mehano gear. One of the controller (exactly like the one you shown) blow, just under normal use. It is just a poorly heatsinked LM317 !!!. Here train hobby shops have almost disseared and you have few option online with prices that make no sense at all making this crap an horrible choice because it is overpriced and less-than-a-toy quality. When he got some DCC targeted stuff and moved into DCC, the quality got a bit better (the bucks did too). On the other hand we had many troubles with DCC on the same layout we had no issued under normal DC use. In a second area we had dedicated cabling every 30cm or so to satisfy controller requirements, still pretty glitchy. Im not teling DCC is bad ... but we couldnt get used to it. Yes we clean the track, loco pickpups, wheels etc. It did improve and after short start to fail again.

  • @Petemonster62
    @Petemonster62 3 года назад +6

    SMT - With all those electric locomotives, you have Ontario's equivalent of the Northeast Corridor! The " wall wart " was made for 220 volts A.C. input, so connecting 120 volts A.C. to the European power plug would probably produce half the rated D.C. voltage output to the set's controller. Does the locomotive have a working headlight? Maybe you should consider making a short video of how you weighted the dummy locomotive, for others who own this set, so they can make that same modification and get better operation!

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  3 года назад +2

      Yeah, the Mehano starter sets are pretty rough, but I think they are mostly aimed at children. Many of their starter sets also contains a layout printed on paper with some accessories like carton buildings. Sam's Trains reviewed a couple of them. Mehano also has a hobby-line of mostly European diesel engines which are pretty decent from what I've heard.

      For 38 bucks though? This thing is a good value even with its flaws. Sure, it would be better if it ran out of the box without needing a bit of work and the gearing is pretty tall (though that's to be expected of a high speed train), but does everything have to be a super-precise rivet counter's wet dream?

      Small disclaimer before you go searching: These sets aren't as cheap as the starter sets. Usually going for 199-220 euros (294-325cad/236-261usd), but reasonably so because they're built so much better; they're DCC Ready, have directional lighting and coach interiors.
      And now your search methods.
      www.mehano.si/en/products/mehano-hobby
      Click on Mehano Hobby and then scroll down until you find the TGV based sets (unfortunately, as I was typing and copying links, I noticed they sold out, AGAIN!). A small disclaimer, the Expansion packs say AC, but to my knowledge, they don't have any ceter rail pads that AC trains have, so they're presumably DC compatible.
      Your other option is to go on ebay and search "Ho scale Mehano TGV."
      The way to differentiate between train line and hobby line is the box style. The Train line has a much bigger box with track, the Hobby Line only has the 4 unit train.
