Banning while walking would be a good idea too. Watched a pedestrian walk into the side of a car. @glen1534 just imagine how many more vehicle drivers would use their phones if it were not banned?
Same way that having identifiable markings on a car, make by far the majority change their behaviour on the road so as not to get prosecuted.

I ride a legal ebike. Without putting in any effort, they go up hills twice as fast and do 15mph+ with throttle. I recon they dont go above 15mph to not make it too obvious to police. What is odd though is that I never see them using lights at night, I asssume it is so they can go faster without it being obvious.

Yeah, they are the worst. I've seen them sail past me at over 30mph up a hill, not pedaling at all. They must be fun to ride but it's basically a motorcycle.

Throttle electric bikes and bikes which have much more powerful motors aren't actually illegal.
No more than any car or motorbike can be described as illegal if used recklessly and without a license.
What is illegal is people using them without an appropriate license and using them in ways that are illegal depending on the laws wherever you are.
I bought a 250 watt powered 25 kph maximum assisted speed e-bike a few months ago.
I could have bought instead for less money what is in reality a throttle powered moped or light motorcycle.
I have a license that would allow me to ride one of those perfectly legally.
But I didn't because I wanted an assisted bicycle.
I'm in Ireland and not the UK but I presume it's very similar legally?

    • @SKBKER

    • @igotes
      @igotes Месяц назад +3

@@SKBKER Hmm I don't agree with that logic. I don't think people ride those bikes because motor vehicles aren't restricted. They ride them because they can get away with it most of the time, as they don't have licence plates so nobody can identify them unless stopped by police, and I hardly ever see a copper in town. I'm all for reducing the amount of motor vehicles on the road but I think making cycling easier would be a better solution than making life harder for motorists.

This problem of people riding around at night with NO lights and NO high viz, often dressed in black as well, has exploded since these awful companies like Deliveroo and Uber Eats have come to priminence. In fact I would say about 80% of their riders either have no lighting or insufficient lighting. The way they are paid (per delivery) also encourages them to take risks with their riding. I live in Leeds and have had a few close calls with them in just the last 12 months alone.

I drive trams and go through a major city. The sheer amount of delivery cyclists who zip past roads or blind corners without even thinking to look or slow down in unbelievable. There's a particular blind corner where I have to have my hand hovering over the emergency brake because I know taxis and delivery cyclists love to do it there. They also simply adore leaving their bikes on the road while they go and pick up food because clearly the tracks and big double yellow lines mean there's nothing that needs to get past. On more than one occasion I've had to get out and move the bike myself because they simply never show up or only do so after several minutes and then they have the gall to wave at me like it was my pleasure to wait. I'm not sure how any of it can be fixed but I know one day there's going to be a fatality as its very hard to stop a 30 ton vehicle even with the brakes.

After lighting -up time you had to have a red light on the rear (as well as a red reflector) and a white light to the front. Lighting up times were published, but basically if the street lights were on, so should be your bike lights. It was enforced by the police.....

In my opinion and without stating the obvious if you don't have lights (switched on)on your bike at night you're an accident waiting to happen. Be seen be safe. You wouldn't drive a car on a public road without lights on at night so why do the same on a bike? If I know I'm going to be cycling at night I always make sure my rechargeable front light has plenty of charge and that my rear light has spare batteries. I also check that both work as they should before setting off. The police used to enforce having lights on bikes but these days where I live Cheshire police don't do anything about it.

@@christianb.1028 the main issue, is if a light is capable of emitting a steady light (i.e. not flashing), it must be marked as conforming to the British Standard BS6102/3 (or equivalent EC standard). Most lights that have a flashing mode, also have a steady light mode - but are not marked with the British Standard.
If you manage to find a light that flashes, but has no steady light mode. Then those flashes must be regular, with a frequency between 1 and 4 Hz. So any irregular flashing patterns or throbbing/pulsing lights don't meet the criteria. Almost all flashing lights you can buy are not legal to use as your only source of light.
You must also have yellow pedal reflectors fitted - but many 'clipless' pedals have no way of adding yellow reflectors! So, if you ride with proper cycling shoes and clipless pedals, it's difficult to comply.
The lights that do conform to the British Standard are really rubbish. Very dim and not much use. However, you can add additional lights, that don't comply and still be legal, as long as you have at least a front and rear light that meet the standard. So, I ended up putting BS lamps front and rear as 'back up' lights, to ensure I was legal, but using properly bright flashing lights front and rear to ensure I was actually visible and could see where I was going.

    Did you notice:
    - 4:31: the lack of lights on a delivery rider, and also the lack of reflectors on the wheels. I wonder if that food delivery company has any rules about lights. A bit later, note the motion conveyed by the reflectors on the pedals. Spoke reflectors also convey motion, and I would get some even if I have the reflective white rings on my tyres.
    - 5:28: the van on the shared path. A bit further ahead the blue car halfway on the pavement. I still wouldn’t do wheelies on the road, but you also can’t go to cyclists and tell them to please stay on the path.
    - 5:50: the apartments. (also, the townhouses in the previous clip). A lot of people living there are going to have very little to no private outdoor space. So, as long as we’re not on an arterial type road, I’m on the fence about this - on one hand cyclists should look after themselves, but on the other hand, people in these homes should have some outdoor space around their homes where they can just… *be*, and not having to concentrate on being a “road user”.
    - 6:38: credit where credit is due - both people would have averted an accident if the other one would not have stopped. Although, yes, that was uncomfortably high stakes for that cyclist.

Bad as these examples are, I still think the overall standard of cycling in the UK is pretty good. I spent some time in the Netherlands recently and if their highway code were based on my observations, then the priority is:
    1) Cyclists
    2) Lights
    3) Anyone else
Several times a day, I saw pedestrians having to jump back when they had a green light to cross because the cyclists were not going to stop until they reached their destination, red lights or not.

Rule 60 of the Highway Code is backed up by law and it states ‘At night your cycle MUST have white front and red rear lights lit. It MUST also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85). White front reflectors and spoke reflectors will also help you to be seen. Flashing lights are permitted but it is recommended that cyclists who are riding in areas without street lighting use a steady front lamp.’

Sadly the new highway code rules appear to have had the opposite effect on those it was supposed to protect. Pedestrians now wander with zero self awareness or even self preservation, now seem to think it is everyone elses responsibility to look out for them and they can do whatever they like. Same goes for cyclists, especially in London, where the rules of the road appear only to apply to motorists. Same goes for cycling on the pavement, I'm all for having segregated cycling or shared access but where that's not possible, that doesn't mean you can go bombing down the pavement and expect pedestrians to get out of your way.

I've also got lots of footage of cyclists riding like zombies! And yes Ive also cycled for deliveroo around battersea and Chelsea... I've never been hit by another car why? Because I have basic common sense and I'm also a car driver. I think its a common trend to cycle with no lights on with dark clothes on around London... Mainly uber and deliveroo cyclists. When I was at deliveroo my bike had led strip under the frame creating a big glow of light! And a note to cyclist with lights... Make sure they are flashing lights as that will be noticed more by a driver than a non flashing light... Just think 10 feet beyond your self for a change... The level of cycling skills have dropped the last 15 years, I think your right when u said "cyclists mates say cyclists have priority so cycle as you like".

It's nothing new - 20 years ago a kid on a bike came out of a side road on the wrong side and onto the bonnet of my car, I barely had time to react. He was lucky to get away with only a broken finger; my windscreen was smashed and the kid's parents didn't even offer to cover the excess on my insurance 🤬
As for lights, I just don't understand why some people don't use them - I turn mine on even when I'm cycling in broad daylight because I WANT TO BE SEEN

6:10 many cyclists feel they don't have too? no I would say a few. Remember there are bad road users using every type of vehicle.

Kids on scooters in Derby are very bad. Don't look when moving out into the road. Wrong way around round abouts. And no lights at night. You can't see them until your nearly on top of them.

1:36 Ashley calling out for a bad road user before the bad road user is even in view. that's grade A-1 observation.

Another excellent video, but I think you were a little harsh about the cyclist at 6:09.
He may well have been forced across the give way markings by the line of cars coming up behind him. In this situation it must be glaringly obvious that the cyclist isn't turning left, and will be crossing back onto the chosen route. And if a following driver is, for any reason, expecting a hand signal at this point, would the driver be expecting a left turn signal, or a right turn signal?
Any signal given might cause confusion so, in this case, it is more sensible to just rejoin the main route without a signal, and for drivers to pay attention to the fact that this scenario, where a cyclist takes advantage of a "safety space', for self preservation, is very common.

I always thought it was a legal requirement to have lights on a bicycle when it’s dark or in poor visibility.
