I'm writing a paper on parasocial relationships within music for school and your video was so interesting and helpful! This needs to be talked about more and I'm glad that some people are :)
Omg Frances thank you so much 🥺 I love your content sm & this comment just made my whole day. I’m sure you’ve experienced some weird stuff with parasocial relationships with your platform over the years, even in the few months of small growth on here & TikTok I have ppl overstep boundaries. I also have a hard time setting those boundaries tho cuz I don’t wanna hurt anybodys feelings lmao 😭
This was such a relevant topic, and I have been waiting for someone to talk about this topic since it is such an important and real issue that affects many people of all ages today. I also think that this para social relationship not only applies to artists but people like RUclipsrs, streamers, etc. I know especially that young people in the dream smp community really need to hear this discussion because it is such a big part of people’s like. I’ve felt this way about artists for a long time and to see someone put it into such eloquent words really made a great deal to me!
It absolutely applies to RUclipsrs and generally anybody with a platform, I see the misunderstanding on social media 24/7. People making comments on other people’s bodies because they feel like they are entitled to for some reason, even though they aren’t. It can get scary really quick, for everyone involved. I appreciate you watching, and I’m glad you enjoyed the video and shared your thoughts/experiences!!
Thank you for watching! I felt it was important, too. Something I needed to check myself on as well, it’s easy to get sucked into everything and forget the situation lol.
I know Lana Del Rey is an artist that recently has changed/reevaluated the way she interacts with her fan base. She’s been stalked before, people breaking into her houses, stealing her cars, someone planning to kidnap her, ppl going on stage, etc
I noticed that about her & her fan base! I’m not a huge Lana fan so I don’t know a ton about the fan base but I remember her addressing it directly and she’s now removed from media and the public eye pretty much entirely. Lorde addressed this idea too in her Solar Power album, I forget which song but there’s a lyric about how she doesn’t owe anyone to be sad and write songs for them. It’s wild the range of behavior people will go through in order to feel closer to an artist, whether it be demanding music or demanding access to their homes or person. It’s gross, normal people don’t behave like that lol. At least not mature people, from teenagers sometimes I can understand and empathize because everyone needs time to learn but it’s when I see grown adults acting out I’m like … what is up with that … ? Lol.
I appreciate this comment tbh cuz I was scared to talk about this, I didn’t wanna get dragged 😭 but I have had to look at myself honestly and check my own behavior, and if I didn’t talk about this on the channel I started to open these conversations it would be pretty hypocritical lol. I get lost in the sauce of some of these artists as well, it’s easy lol. I’m fighting the feminine urge to attack Jake Gyllenhaal rn, but I know it’s not right 😭😭
I’m so glad you enjoyed it and took something away from the conversation! I learned a lot & reflected on my own behavior patterns while I was writing this up. It’s something I think is necessary for everyone as you grow and develop in the world, ya know?
Taylor swift is one of the worst fanbases out there her fans will attack you for no reason they attacked avril back in 2014 because they saw pictures where she wasn't next to a fan but that was when she was starting to get sick and I am a hard-core avril fan but if she fucked up I would want her to be held accountable I stopped like Carrie underwood after her political stuff starting coming and started spewing hate
I understand the perspective, but honestly I don’t think the swifties are any worse than other fandoms in the community. It’s not about the fandom itself, it’s about the type of people who are in fandoms who don’t understand the complexities of the relationship there. All artists should be held accountable for their actions, and I also don’t really support artists who’s views aren’t aligned with my own, but the responsibility of fan behavior falls onto the fans, including those who don’t actively participate in the culture. By not actively participating in one way or another, you are contributing in a way as well because your views are valid and should be shared. The reason many people feel like they can’t share or be apart of these communities is because of the mentality of an army, when it should just be like an after school club or something lol. I have definitely had my hand in some inappropriate fan behavior, it’s all about growing and learning and opening up these conversations to everyone. I really appreciate your input and taking the time to comment, I see your perspective!
@@howdyimvictoria okay i get that that makes sense and I will admit I've been bad about it to now I just pretty much ignore the negative comments on things because I don't have the time to focus on the lol
@@erikkoski6129 Sometimes it’s not worth the fight, usually if someone is just being unhinged you aren’t gonna go anywhere. But if there is a point to me made and there is an opportunity to open a line of communication to actually just have a normal conversation, I’ve found that both parties can usually learn something from it. I try and be honest and lead with something like, “listen genuinely just want to ask…” or “ok I can understand where you’re coming from, I’d like to offer a different perspective as well…” It’s fun to talk about music like that, but it’s hard to know when you can or can’t ask. It doesn’t hurt though!
I mean no disrespect but with the parasocial you were talking about that that is what helped free Britney so your basically saying that as fans we have to be their strictly for music and not to help with stuff like that Britney had her human rights stripped away again I mean no disrespect just generously curious on that
Really good topic to bring up in this conversation! The relationship is still parasocial, but the difference there was that even Britney herself was not controlling her image. The forced idea of Britney that was created by her family/team during her conservatorship was so beyond parasocial that it was alarming, which in my opinion was one of the catalysts for the Free Britney movement. You can still care deeply about artists and their well beings, fight for their rights like people did for Britney and like how people stood up for Taylor Swift with getting her music back. It’s about you knowing the personal boundary and recognizing you are apart of a larger effort there. I also think it’s going to take a long time for people to re-frame their perceptions of these relationships because honestly, it’s hard. When you pass one of your friends pictures on Instagram and it’s followed up by an artist you love, it can get blurry quickly. I’m curious to see how Britney develops her own relationship with her fan base as she continues in life, however she chooses too. I do think she does a really good job of setting those boundaries for herself now, like she talks pretty directly to her fan base on social media about leaving her alone when it gets to be too much. Thank you for bringing this up, I think this is one we could probably talk about in a lot more depth. It’s hard to word all this correctly in this little comment section lol.
@@erikkoski6129 honestly you got me curious too, I’m gonna keep thinking about this 🧐 Honestly I’m just so happy for Britney rn too I hope she sues her family for all that mess
Hi, I think its fucking disgusting what happened at astro world. But thats not want i wanna talk about. I dont just wanna keep this a music thing. Its more than this. Im a guy. A autistic one. I watch a lot of youtube and twitch. Im mostly left leaning. But ive brought youtube merch twice in my life. And its because i really wanted to clothes cause i liked them. Never have i subbed to a patreon never have i been influnced enough to buy a sponsored product, not even gamer sups. I dont sit on twich all day and simp. I dont think the i know the people i watch daily. I dont pry into their life unlees theyve done something activly terrible i cant accept or support with a view. And more than anything if anything i respect a funni youtuber or a person who can make me activly legitimately laugh after all ive been through. And thats it. So i wanna bring up some double standards. Girls are the original simps. You have alwaye been pathetic in this regaurd. The most important wemon in my life. Swoon over a shitty bleach blond rapper, who uses his shitty ""music"" as a public journal. A idiotk who thought it would be a good carreer move, to swich genre's and then spit on its culture and its fan and elders. Like he belonged and was there the whole time. And then started making shitty bastardized covers of classics, and making more journal entrys in the form of even more darivitive music. And i had to hear about him daily, for half of highschool collage to this day at 27 i see my sister once a fucking year she gate keeps visits, and i have to listen about her parasocial relationship. I have to watch her and realize 100000billion + girls not just my sister are buying out this guys shows and even buying at 4x the price from a scammer following him everywhere. You dont even know him. And then i think. Its always been this way. If not him the Eminem Bieber Britany Taylor justin and the boys, insync BTS the list is really infinite. You look on youtube and online anywhere else. Theres no talk, barly ever has been. So you create these double standards But you guys get to gate keep sex, belittle us for wanted sex, or likeing natural things. Girls who are sick of guys who like boobs, they will wear low cut tops unpurpose as a fuckin test, then have the audacity to be like, how much you make, how tall are you, girth and or length upfront please, you get angry at us for having simple happinesses, for being confused, for not knowing up from down.
