  • ‘O Lord, support us’ - David Briggs (2005) sung by the Choir of the Cathedral of St John the Divine, New York.
Last Sunday, 5th November, I had the huge pleasure of conducting and playing some of my pieces at Choral Evensong at Big John. Thinking about it, this is the first time I’ve conducted at Evensong for about a decade - in my former incarnations it was 5 times a week! I am very grateful indeed to Director of Cathedral Music, Kent Tritle, for affording me this lovely experience. The choir is really like driving a Rolls-Royce! Bryan Zaros (our Associate Director of Music and Choirmaster) filmed the anthem, ‘O Lord, support us’, which sounded so beautiful in our wondrous acoustic. I wrote it back in 2005 for Jeremy Bruns (the then Associate at St Thomas Fifth Avenue) as a birthday present for his wife, Cathy. It was first performed very memorably at ST5A in 2007, conducted by the late John Scott. I hope you enjoy it here - sorry that just the first chord is missing from the recording, but it’s a soft Db major chord, on the word ‘O’!

We need this sublime resonance now more than ever. Wonderful and moving.
