  • Maranello Pur-sang Ep8 - Classic, Vintage, Veteran and RADwood car restorations and repairs from the vantage point of the mechanics, auto body mechanics and paint technicians that work to keep our motoring heritage on the road.
In this episode I have compiled the work done to an Alfa Romeo Montreal that i regularly see on the streets of Melbourne's northern suburbs. It was in the garage for some time as various bits and pieces needed doing but eventually it was returned to its owner in fine fettle.
Twice weekly visits to classic auto garages featuring cars from 1886 to 1999 & including car restoration, rebuilds, repairs and restomods to anything from Aussie V8s, American muscle cars, Euro exotics, JDM, your coveted everyday runabout and more. If it's built before the turn of the century, there's every chance I'll film it.
I simply love old cars and visiting garages to chat to the people working on them. Added to that, I devour car content on youtube so I thought I'd join in and make some myself.
Hopefully you might like to come along for the journey as well.

This takes me back to the early 70's when I took my apprenticeship with Alfa Romeo (GB) Ltd at Staples Corner London NW2. We all developed skills in parking in tight spaces every night, too.

The work performed by the entity that conducted the restoration on the dash is sub-standard to say the least. Before they disassembled the dash's semi-circular instrument brackets they failed to check if there were any differences between the brackets, and there are, as well as establish their original location. The end result was a dash that was assembled with the instrument brackets swapped over - i.e. speedo bracket positioned on the right and tacho bracket on the left. The aforesaid is most likely the underlying reason why the reattchment of the brackets resulted in an obvious misalignment of the brackets with respect to the dash pad - especially if they used some of the existing original rivit holes and the increased difficulty in fitting the speedo cluster to the bracket.
The insturment bracket located to the left of the dash is designed to accommodate the speedo cluster, and to do this, it has a deliberate cutout on the bottom edge to allow sufficient clearance for the red wiring connector that juts out of the rear (lower edge) of the speedo cluster. Fitting the speedo cluster to the bracket designed for the tacho is possible (at a push) - although there would be insufficient clearance for the connector which will likely give rise to undesirable 'rubbing and squeaks' whilst driving the car.
To remedy the situation, it would have been preferable to 'swap over' the cluster brackets - which appears to be an oversight by the technician, although I do appreciate that time is a finite resource in a busy workshop. One posiitive note is that the restored dash pad did look reasonable.

Always thought the Montreal was a stunning piece of 70s Italian design
