You are not taking business away from my local sharpening tech as I would never need one. My clippers are a couple of years old now, they get used once a month and now need sharpening. First up, love your work, Mate! Your family dynamics is a great example for all of us, & the music - icing on the cake. I have been (doughnut) flat sharpening clippers for many years and have excellent results. I can understand the push back from pro sharpeners was partly factual, but I suspect it was mostly the fact that you're cutting their grass'. I remember getting the same push back 20 years ago when I was trying to figure out how to do it myself. With trial & error, I stumbled across something similar to what you have shown in your previous clips. I shave my own head and beard every 2 weeks and I get about 3 years between sharpening an old school Wahl super taper. I have sharpened my friends blades as well & have been getting similar results. I settled on 400grit flat grinding, but I'm going to try your method. I think It's safe to say, this is your area of expertise. I'm wondering if a different hollow grinding jig might suit the in between (not a pro sharpener, but a remote barber shop) sharpeners? If you cut the teeth of an old handsaw so you end up with a long rectangle plate with bit of spring. You could gently spring up the centre by pushing from each end, between two blocks. This would give a much shallower curve that matches your pro convex sharpening disk. You could back fill the curve with some builders bog (two part polyester filler) to give you a hard plate with a relatively consistent arc. The longer length could be an advantage. Not that I wanted to add to your 'clippercide' demise, but I'm a firm believer that information should be shared freely. On that note, this will be the next project on my list. Great video man! Another tip to help us viewers follow along is to mark the area that is being sharpened with a red sharpie so once you do the demonstration us viewers could physically see the highlighted area being resurfaced more vividly!

Ive noticed that if you pick up a small bottle of alcohol ink from the craft store or art store it almost works like the ink used in blade making for this purpose. I forget what it's called but anyway the ink is usually used for scrapbooking. Get a dark blue. @vegatyme1

Appreciate the help videos. A little hint for those that are totally new at any sharpening and I use when I sharpen my wood lathe and saw blades. I take a black sharpie and paint the area to be sharpened and you can more easily see that you are sharpening evenly. Again I do appreciate now I can sharpen my clippers
I was recently asked to sharpen some clipper blades, and found this series of videos. Thank you...so much. The heads I have done all work flawlessly. More than one was really bad too. While the hand method is slow, it is also very easy to control pressure and amount of material removal. I will add that I did do one thing differently. I completely understand using the sanding block, and started trying to find another very slightly convexed surface. Many cars have this surface on their hoods or roofs. I have a spare hood scoop for my MINI...an absolutely perfect surface. Keep sharp man.
I have been getting a lot of calls about doing dog clippers. Your videos have helped me to open a whole new market. Did my first batch of clipper blades the other day, and my customer was very happy with the result. Her blades mostly needed cleaning (she does a lot of poodles, apparently), so it was a pretty easy job, but they came out great. I have an awful lot already invested in equipment, and the thought of springing 2 grand did not appeal to me at all. THANK YOU!!!!

I do have one question: Can any of these techniques be used to restore and sharpen "self-sharpening stainless steel blades" on beard trimmers/body groomers (like a phillips Norelco Bodygroomer or vacuum beard trimmer series 7000 ) or wahl stainless steel lithium ion trimmer?
I'm not wealthy but I decided to treat myself with a German Moser 1400. Not the best on the market but for me who never spent more than 30 bucks for a trimmer, getting a 75€ one was a big thing. And I love it, it's a monster and that clack sound, and kick it does when you turn it on is just music. Anyway, recently it started to pull my hair, so I cleanef it up and things got better, but I think it's time to sharpen it. As I said it was a lot of money for my pockets and I'm a bit scared to ruin it, bit I'm watching your videos and I'm starting to get more confident. Finger crossed. But if I lived in US, I'm not sure which state or city you live, you'd be my sharpener of choice, no doubt.
Hello, I have been sharpening for over 15 years. You have not created the hollow grind between the cutter and comb. Your theory is solid and I like the pencil trick. You need to rotate the blade 90 degrees to get the profile of the hollow grind on the cutter and comb. Sanding side to side to get the profile. Going the way you show is not getting the profile you have on the block. Put the 2 sanding blocks flat side together and you will see the way the cutter and comb make up the shape like you show with your hands. I have made this block many years ago. The problem I have found is the grind lines are not going the same direction as in the wheel and it does not cut well. If you have success with this method I am glad for you.

So i am going to take everything you have said into consideration and look it over. The one thing that has helped me over the years as a sharpener is that i am a licensed working barber. I was able to test everything ive tried over the years on real hair and make adjustments accordingly. I never had to use rabbits fur. So before i give out any information ive tested myself for 6 months to a yr. All these videos are proven and tested info from me as a barber and sharpener. @@keepitsharp357 I am not a sharpener. I am a mom of 2 boys and a husband and couldn't find any professional sharpeners to sharpen my Wahl blades. The one lady I found did it but it didn't work so I got another Wahl. Now in covid I really can't find anyone. I am so blessed by these videos - you and your family are priceless and so darn cool!!! So I am NOT a sharpener but the above comment made sense to my pictoral mind. On the machine, the blade is 90 degrees to cone angle and the machine wheel spins right to left as you pull the blade from the center of the machine out to the edge and then back to the center, perpendicular to the machine spin direction. I think to duplicate this same direction and flow you need to turn the blade 90 degrees so it pulls across the width of the block, not the length. If you set the short side of the block against your belly and and the length direction goes out away from your stomach, you would move the block , as it were, right hip to left hip and start the blade at the left hip corner and move it straight out away from you as you move the block right to left across it. When you run out of block, then you put the blade in the top left corner of the block as far away from you as you can go and pull toward you as you move the block right hip to left hip across it. I have no idea if these directions make sense, but if I could draw it I think it is correct to duplicate the arc of the sanding machine and the direction it moves as you move the blade back and forth across it. You have tried your method though so even though in my mind it seems like the direction and angle is wrong somehow it works. I would be so curious if you tried my method ("if" you can understand it) if it would sharpen even better. Regardless I am trying your method till you test out Allen Marshall's idea that I riffed on. If you change your method and make a new video, I will learn from that one. Again thank you so much from my amateur family barber heart!!! Your whole family made my day today!

In sharpening there is no one way. And my way i teach is not the only way. Its just a way that worked and im sharing. @@owenmccann8926 I think you are correct about turning the blade 90 degrees and the first part of your explanation is clear, but when you got to the left hip and right hip my eyes glazed over trying to visualize it. 😳 I haven’t heard if he ever tried this method but I doubt it because he apparently has success with his. However, I can’t believe both methods would work because they would produce two different grinds. Have you tried it out yourself? I sure would like to get to the bottom of this before I start sharpening.

This is great, one suggestion though. If you run a black marker on the blade before you start to sharpen, you will be able to better show the camera the advancement of the ground line. +1 for involving your kids, both good looking and talented!
2 questions. 1. Do you have any videos of you sharpening with the machine and 2. Do you have any videos of you sharpening t-outliner blades with the machine?
@@keepitsharp357 yes. I have 4 machines, but I keep running into the same issues with all 4 machines. I have a 16in Nebraska, Lazer 10in, perfecto 10in (which needs a new wheel), and a foley 14in. But no matter which one I use, I always have the a hard time getting sharp the 1 1/2, 2, 3, and t-outliner trimmer blades. They always pull after I sharpen them and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I keep the wheel laced with grit every 4th blade. I keep my strokes in a consistent up and down motion. I always sharpen until both teeth and brace is shiny and has a consistent mirror finish to it with no inconsistencies. And I always demagnetize and clean the blades after sharpening. All this and I still have issues with the same types of blades in my list. Every blade outside of that list I get perfect. Please help me to understand what I'm doing wrong?
But why would you need to use the convex sharpening? Your example seems logic because it makes a difference between the base and the tip. However, If I'm not mistaken, the curvature is 90 degrees off with respect to the wheel in your in your example. If the curvature of the wheel starts at the top, the lower part of the blade would be asymmetrically sharpened and it's the same if the curvature starts at the lower part of the disc. If the curvature starts at the middle part of the disc and goes down in both directions, then there is no purpose to move the blade up and down when the disc is moving, because the moving would make the shaperning as if it were done on flat stone. I don't believe that's needed the disc nor the convex sand paper. I think a flat stone is the only thing needed.
I agree, the method in part 1 is all that is needed the vast majority of the time. You notice the blades are recessed so that only the front and back are touching anyway, lapping flat will produce a longer lasting, sharper cutting blade. Hollow grinding will only make for less material to remove if you lap it next time? The professional rotary sharpener would have to be a part of a sphere to sharpen the blade symmetrically, and then the sides of the blades would have more pressure and there'd be a gap in the middle, not sure if that's the case or not. I like a diamond stone with soapy water, cuts so easy and fine at the same time.
Super late on these videos (loving them by the way) , dog groomer here, which grit is used for the curved side, and which grit is used for the flat side of the block??
I think the video shows he has two curved sandpaper holders, I don't believe you use the bottom side. Lower number grit takes more material since it is coarser, higher number grit smooths any burrs since it is finer. I think the bottom side is there to make it multi-purpose without switching out the sandpaper for different sanding surfaces not in relation to sharpening.
I am a little "thick" headed sir. After having purchased a new blade, and then it becoming dull, can I continue "flat" sharpening it for many times...? Or is the "flat" sharpening just the short fix...? And then I have to go thru this "hollow" ground process...? Thank you sir.

You use the same ratio for sharpening? I believe you said it was 1:2 in your first video. For every 1 stroke you do on the round side you do double on the flat side, right?

@@jerryvargas9839 all those detachable clipper blades are hollow ground. The thing is if they are not really that bad you can sharpen them slightly flat and get the sharp edges back on the blade and be back in business. However i always recommend practicing on a old blade or two to be sure your skills are working before you do any of your good blades. Now as for hollow ground method practice that as well on and old blade or two. Get your skill down then check that tje blades are sharp and cutting. Yes they are hollow ground. Hope i helped you.
@@keepitsharp357 Thanks for the info. I do have some broken blades that dogs accidentally kicked off the table I can practice on. Keep up the good videos I will be a fan even if it doesn't have to with dog grooming. But if you know anything about k9 blow dryers I would love to learn on the regular maintenance and repair for them because once they get older they always need something. I have 3 of them, I use 2 on the regular and 1 for backup when 1 of the 2 goes down. If not I love to see a family getting involved and working together to create something good that looks like their having a good time when they are doing it . I'm a father and love spending time with my boys on projects and working together. Just want to say i think you're videos are good because they have an authentic original content that comes out of a family working together. I dropped my clippers and chipped one of the cutting blade teeth and they started to make loud noise is this due to the chipped tooth or something inside because I've taken them apart nothing is broken or out of place plus when fully open or in half the sound fine but when fully closed they get loud any ideas would help alot love the videos keep them coming

@@cesar-jd9go is there a way you can send a pic or the way they sound to me direct message on Instagram @keep_it_sharp. If the a power screw on the side it might just nee a slight adjustment or the magnetic motor slid over and just need to be slid back in place. Not a big issue at all but if you just want a new clipper the cordless one do have pretty good power.
Be sure the cleaning process is done well. Also though there a clean shine dont always means everything is even and balanced. You have to be sure of that as well
How come everywhere I look professionally you're supposed to be using 3,000 grit sandpaper and 8,000 to polish any type of sharpening knife or tool.. Why are you using 220 isn't that way too rough?
Polishing and sharpening are 2 different things. Most clipper blades machines use 220 grit. But remember im not dogmatic about what i teach. To each is his own. Try it if those work for you great

As long as they are the traditional blade of a comb blade and a cutter moving blade it should work

I'm not wealthy but I decided to treat myself with a German Moser 1400. Not the best on the market but for me who never spent more than 30 bucks for a trimmer, getting a 75€ one was a big thing. And I love it, it's a monster and that clack sound, and kick it does when you turn it on is just music. Anyway, recently it started to pull my hair, so I cleanef it up and things got better, but I think it's time to sharpen it. As I said it was a lot of money for my pockets and I'm a bit scared to ruin it, bit I'm watching your videos and I'm starting to get more confident. Finger crossed.
But if I lived in US, I'm not sure which state or city you live, you'd be my sharpener of choice, no doubt.

I have been sharpening for over 15 years. You have not created the hollow grind between the cutter and comb. Your theory is solid and I like the pencil trick. You need to rotate the blade 90 degrees to get the profile of the hollow grind on the cutter and comb. Sanding side to side to get the profile. Going the way you show is not getting the profile you have on the block. Put the 2 sanding blocks flat side together and you will see the way the cutter and comb make up the shape like you show with your hands. I have made this block many years ago. The problem I have found is the grind lines are not going the same direction as in the wheel and it does not cut well. If you have success with this method I am glad for you.

So i am going to take everything you have said into consideration and look it over. The one thing that has helped me over the years as a sharpener is that i am a licensed working barber. I was able to test everything ive tried over the years on real hair and make adjustments accordingly. I never had to use rabbits fur. So before i give out any information ive tested myself for 6 months to a yr. All these videos are proven and tested info from me as a barber and sharpener. @@keepitsharp357 I am not a sharpener. I am a mom of 2 boys and a husband and couldn't find any professional sharpeners to sharpen my Wahl blades. The one lady I found did it but it didn't work so I got another Wahl. Now in covid I really can't find anyone. I am so blessed by these videos - you and your family are priceless and so darn cool!!! So I am NOT a sharpener but the above comment made sense to my pictoral mind. On the machine, the blade is 90 degrees to cone angle and the machine wheel spins right to left as you pull the blade from the center of the machine out to the edge and then back to the center, perpendicular to the machine spin direction. I think to duplicate this same direction and flow you need to turn the blade 90 degrees so it pulls across the width of the block, not the length. If you set the short side of the block against your belly and and the length direction goes out away from your stomach, you would move the block , as it were, right hip to left hip and start the blade at the left hip corner and move it straight out away from you as you move the block right to left across it. When you run out of block, then you put the blade in the top left corner of the block as far away from you as you can go and pull toward you as you move the block right hip to left hip across it. I have no idea if these directions make sense, but if I could draw it I think it is correct to duplicate the arc of the sanding machine and the direction it moves as you move the blade back and forth across it. You have tried your method though so even though in my mind it seems like the direction and angle is wrong somehow it works. I would be so curious if you tried my method ("if" you can understand it) if it would sharpen even better. Regardless I am trying your method till you test out Allen Marshall's idea that I riffed on. If you change your method and make a new video, I will learn from that one. Again thank you so much from my amateur family barber heart!!! Your whole family made my day today!

In sharpening there is no one way. And my way i teach is not the only way. Its just a way that worked and im sharing. I haven’t heard if he ever tried this method but I doubt it because he apparently has success with his. However, I can’t believe both methods would work because they would produce two different grinds. Have you tried it out yourself? I sure would like to get to the bottom of this before I start sharpening.

This is great, one suggestion though. If you run a black marker on the blade before you start to sharpen, you will be able to better show the camera the advancement of the ground line. +1 for involving your kids, both good looking and talented!

@@keepitsharp357 yes. I have 4 machines, but I keep running into the same issues with all 4 machines. I have a 16in Nebraska, Lazer 10in, perfecto 10in (which needs a new wheel), and a foley 14in. But no matter which one I use, I always have the a hard time getting sharp the 1 1/2, 2, 3, and t-outliner trimmer blades. They always pull after I sharpen them and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I keep the wheel laced with grit every 4th blade. I keep my strokes in a consistent up and down motion. I always sharpen until both teeth and brace is shiny and has a consistent mirror finish to it with no inconsistencies. And I always demagnetize and clean the blades after sharpening. All this and I still have issues with the same types of blades in my list. Every blade outside of that list I get perfect. Please help me to understand what I'm doing wrong?

@@str8jaber first are the plate you are sharpening with old and need to be resurfaced or they have a fairly decent surface
But why would you need to use the convex sharpening?
Your example seems logic because it makes a difference between the base and the tip. However, If I'm not mistaken, the curvature is 90 degrees off with respect to the wheel in your in your example.
If the curvature of the wheel starts at the top, the lower part of the blade would be asymmetrically sharpened and it's the same if the curvature starts at the lower part of the disc.
If the curvature starts at the middle part of the disc and goes down in both directions, then there is no purpose to move the blade up and down when the disc is moving, because the moving would make the shaperning as if it were done on flat stone.
I don't believe that's needed the disc nor the convex sand paper.
I think a flat stone is the only thing needed.
I agree, the method in part 1 is all that is needed the vast majority of the time. You notice the blades are recessed so that only the front and back are touching anyway, lapping flat will produce a longer lasting, sharper cutting blade. Hollow grinding will only make for less material to remove if you lap it next time? The professional rotary sharpener would have to be a part of a sphere to sharpen the blade symmetrically, and then the sides of the blades would have more pressure and there'd be a gap in the middle, not sure if that's the case or not.
I like a diamond stone with soapy water, cuts so easy and fine at the same time.
@rodfreess6019 what I think it could be a good alternative, is to put some diamond paste and turn the clippers on.

Super late on these videos (loving them by the way) , dog groomer here, which grit is used for the curved side, and which grit is used for the flat side of the block??
I think the video shows he has two curved sandpaper holders, I don't believe you use the bottom side. Lower number grit takes more material since it is coarser, higher number grit smooths any burrs since it is finer. I think the bottom side is there to make it multi-purpose without switching out the sandpaper for different sanding surfaces not in relation to sharpening.

I am a little "thick" headed sir. After having purchased a new blade, and then it becoming dull, can I continue "flat" sharpening it for many times...? Or is the "flat" sharpening just the short fix...? And then I have to go thru this "hollow" ground process...?

You use the same ratio for sharpening? I believe you said it was 1:2 in your first video. For every 1 stroke you do on the round side you do double on the flat side, right?
No sir. Just enough to smooth it out. And get the burrs off. But not to much because you will flatten the hollow ground out

@@jerryvargas9839 all those detachable clipper blades are hollow ground. The thing is if they are not really that bad you can sharpen them slightly flat and get the sharp edges back on the blade and be back in business. However i always recommend practicing on a old blade or two to be sure your skills are working before you do any of your good blades. Now as for hollow ground method practice that as well on and old blade or two. Get your skill down then check that tje blades are sharp and cutting. Yes they are hollow ground. Hope i helped you.
@@keepitsharp357 Thanks for the info. I do have some broken blades that dogs accidentally kicked off the table I can practice on. Keep up the good videos I will be a fan even if it doesn't have to with dog grooming. But if you know anything about k9 blow dryers I would love to learn on the regular maintenance and repair for them because once they get older they always need something. I have 3 of them, I use 2 on the regular and 1 for backup when 1 of the 2 goes down. If not I love to see a family getting involved and working together to create something good that looks like their having a good time when they are doing it . I'm a father and love spending time with my boys on projects and working together. I dropped my clippers and chipped one of the cutting blade teeth and they started to make loud noise is this due to the chipped tooth or something inside because I've taken them apart nothing is broken or out of place plus when fully open or in half the sound fine but when fully closed they get loud any ideas would help alot love the videos keep them coming

If the a power screw on the side it might just nee a slight adjustment or the magnetic motor slid over and just need to be slid back in place. Not a big issue at all but if you just want a new clipper the cordless one do have pretty good power.

Blades are shine clean and sharped but still dont cut,what is priblem
Be sure the cleaning process is done well. Also though there a clean shine dont always means everything is even and balanced. You have to be sure of that as well

Why are you using 220 isn't that way too rough?
Polishing and sharpening are 2 different things. Most clipper blades machines use 220 grit. But remember im not dogmatic about what i teach. To each is his own. Try it if those work for you great
