- When Dimitry was a child, he was surrounded by homophobia. He was called a “masisi,” a homophobic word for “gay” and was poked with sticks at recess by peers. And his father hurled condoms at him while telling him to “be a man” and have sex with women. After moving to Miami, he saw a young gay man from the Bahamas who was kicked out of his home for being gay. In short, Dimitry had little incentive to come out. But he found the strength to do so anyway, and in the process, built a stronger relationship with his mother and learned an invaluable lesson: “We have to have that patience to teach them how to love us.”

And people consistently ask why "coming out" is such a big deal. It's heartbreaking and sometimes dangerous for people to be who they are, surrounded by generational bigotry.
I so appreciate that his mother at least tried to understand.
You can't be serious! Using that term "Generational Bigotry" as blk man who's Gr8 Gandfather lived it n watched it 3 generations B4 him n It took blk ppl 400 mthrfkn yrs of torture to get the Civil Rights Soapbox the LBGTQ community comfortably stands on today.Yours is a sexual fetish not a Nationality or Religion I am not homophobic I'm stating imperial facts as s actively hunted blk man by Racist groups Police and "GENERATIONS" of Systemic bigotry
This story is so real. I'm glad that the consequences of coming out to family was not even more dire for him. And yes, parents and family often need time to come to terms with us being LGBTQ, especially if they have learned to hate that (without even understanding it). When I was younger I knew many who were thrown out, disowned by their parents/family, often after having experienced abuse from them. I'm glad that Dimitry is able to tell his story and be OK with who he is!
I am Haitian and I really don't understand why people are so close minded in the country.
Born and raised there, my mom thought me how to accept everyone for who they truly are and want to be.
The diaspora of people of color have been disconnected from the embrace of the divine masculine and feminine indisciminately assigned to a human being, only to follow this patriarchal ideology that men need to be and act like men (whatever that is), and women need to "act like women." It's the constant enforcement of heteronormativity that is being perpetuated, even if it doesn't fit the person. It's very damaging.
Its an island people mentality.
🤦🏾
Girl bye!
@CEO DON a very open minded goofy!
Dimitry, you are a brave, intelligent, kind young man. Your mum can be proud of you!
@CEO DON You should be disgusted when you look in the mirror.

I'm Haitian and the homophobia is real!! My childhood bestfriend whose a male and Haitian came out to me at 7yrs old. His father used to beat him because he wouldn't play football with the boys, he would always play Barbies with me. When I became I joined the Army, I came home to visit my family and was also looking for my childhood bestfriend. No one has seen him since we graduated highschool. I praying that he found peace.
I'm from Haiti. My best friend came out to his very conservative Haitian parents when he was 30. When he told me about his plans, I wished him luck, and I was very pessimistic about the outcome of that conversation. He also expected scorn and the classic “ You’re no longer our son!” from his parents. When he told them he was gay, they said that they loved him and supported him. He was shocked and could not stop sobbing. (His mom also added “Yeah. I’m your mom; I already knew!” lol)
Amen Dimitry! I can't say too much because I still live in a very homophobic country but your story resonates deeply with me especially the relationship with your mother. I appreciate your final submission about giving loved ones time to learn how to love us the way we need to be loved. I hope you find that balance between loving yourself wholly and unapologetically, and loving those who don't fully understand your sexuality but are making an effort.
This is a good story and he is a good storyteller
Dimitri, I identify totally with your story here. The only difference is that like your mother, I grew up learning to hate gay men. I myself am gay and it took me so long to accept myself. So, now I have a serious boyfriend and I need always to ask him for patience in understanding some of my words and actions which are throwbacks from my early learning. In that way, I am the same as your mother dealing with you, Thank you, Dimitri for sharing.........love you..........Ray
I love your mom for being a fierce defender of you at the school after that bullying episode!
I'm sorry you went through that Dimitry. If you ever read this, you're a strong dude. Thank you for sharing your story. I was also suicidal as a child and teen, and while my ADHD, depression and potential autism was the main reason, not being able to be open about my sexuality and gender identity was also a big factor. I lacked parental support for these things, so I just got good at 'masking'. These days I live openly and am growing every day. It's much healthier.
I admire his bravery bc for many this is a difficult task to muster when you are ready to have "the talk"
Insightful, sensitive & loving!

We're so glad you liked it. ❤️
A beautiful story. God bless you and thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing, your story felt very genuine. You're going to have an amazing relationship with your mom, not because you came out to her,but because you're going to get to know her all over again. Not as the person that gave birth to you, but the woman that's building a relationship with the son she truly loves. ❤️💫 🇭🇹
This was close to home for me. Thank you for sharing
Now this was really good, powerful ending he is exactly right 👏🏾❤️

Thank you for sharing such a moving, inspiring story.
Such insights and wisdom from this wonderful young man are extraordinary. As is his ability to articulate his feelings and experience in a way I could relate to and fully understand. Now this is a masterclass in relationships and love
I'm deeply moved by your story. 🙏
I feel myself connecting with his spirit. He has a very friendly face.
Imagine telling someone to stop being themself because their mother can’t take it.
And worse to shame and try to make him feel guilty because his mother chose to numb herself
@ᴀꜱᴜᴋᴀ ᴀꜱᴜᴋᴀ that’s unfortunately fairly common in many cultures
Such a beautifully perfect story. THANK YOU

You are a very powerful person, thank you, for your conservation and coming out you are one of 1.5 billion gays people all around the world. Dr. James Hadnott.
Thank God for friends who pull us from off the edge. That's love. If I can pull someone from the edge, I will have not lived in vain. Love 2 U! Stay Brave and Carry on. Gregg Oreo long Beach Ca
I don't know why do I have tell anyone that I am gay. The straight guy doesn't have to tell anyone that he is gay.
If I had a child that was gay, the only thing I'd be worried about is someone trying to hurt, bully or murder him/her.
Wow. Good point!
Much love to him!
I looooove youuuu Didi Etienne ❤️❤️❤️
No es que los padres sean malos, sino que ellos así fueron educados.
Great story,
Georgiouse guy. Difficult yet good history 😊
Culture is all very well but we humans simply have to stop handing hatred down from generation to generation.

@Guerlinebeauty 7 After hearing his story that's what stuck in your mind, you took 10 mins outta yo day to say this, wow you are a sad & pathetic individual sis. Who or what gives you the right to judge what he's doing bc I don't recall reading where God said that you can judge what others or doing & that you have the authority to put someone in Heaven or Hell, so calm down & check yoself bc you sound like them racist republican idiots right now. He's bedroom/bf/body count should be of no concern to you. So you might want to do some soul searching on why you're being so judgmental, & showing hatred towards someone you don't even know. Also, keep in mind that karma has a way of coming back around quick these days & tend to hit home harder than you think. Learn how to care & love more instead of being so judgmental & idk what bruh down there is laughing at bc what you said wasn't even funny, it was deplorable 🤷🏿♂️
@ Guerline... He said 2 of my boy friends, meaning 2 of my guy friends but of course, your twisted mind had to see it the other way around.
I hope you co worker see you comment so they fired you at you job you to ignorant to know America have law
