  • The punch is one of the most important components in follicular unit excision (FUE) hair transplants. This tool is what extracts the hair grafts from the body. Although it may be small, the punch has more intricacies than patients may know. With all the different punch types, both patients and doctors can easily be confused by which punch to use.
In this video, Dr. Sanusi Umar, through animation, elaborates on the differences between punches. FUE Punches are broadly classified into two groups rotary and non-rotary. Furthermore, depending on the tip characteristic of the rotary punches, subclassification include, sharp, blunt and hybrid. Non rotary punches are classified into bi pronged and multi pronged.
Both groups can be accessoriezed, by slitting, widowing, rooming, texturing etc and all punches can be used manually or mechanically.
By understanding the different classifications of punch types, patients can know which one will be best for their specific hair and skin type.
