      I read the description of the black and it says it includes "a desktop HDD".
      Both of these drives have a max rpm of 5400 (the faster the better I heard)
      However, I read elsewhere that SSD is much better for external gaming storage.

      @@jonathanvillalba3214 HDD. It is very fast despite being 5400rpm. HDD will do everything ok. SSD is kinda luxury tbh. If you have spare cash and you want things to load fast, go with ssd. My advice, if your pc dont have a ssd, buy a ssd for it first (for OS) then use one you extract from the pc as extra storage. SSD will do a huge upgrade to your system.

      I didn’t test this drive that far yet but based on other HDDs in general it doesn’t dramatically reduce the speed that much but yeah it’s still a little slower reading and writing from the outer edges of the platter than the inner .

      @@Ben7seven7 Ok Thanks. Reason I asked this is nowadays, manufacturers are making SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) drives with poor performance.
      At the beginning people don't get to know since its empty drive. As drive starts filling up, SMR technology starts to read->rewrite old data->write new data... more and more which is when things starts to fall.. People have reported below 20 to 10 MBPS..
      Over the internet, I found what drive is inside P10 and some analysts are saying its an SMR drive.

    Great video. Just picked up the WD Black P10 for my XSX. Now I just need to find a list of games compatible to run off that HDD. Certain "optimized" games, which all are supposed to be SSD only are, in fact, not. One I know for sure is Halo MCC. Optimized for X/S and can be played on any HDD. Takes up over 100GB of space, so that will be the first game xfer'd over lol. Now I just need to find the rest that will work with that HDD.

    • @Ben7seven7
      @Ben7seven7  3 года назад +3

      I think you’ll be fine running anything off of it. Games will just load slower than they will off an SSD or certainly the X1X NVME but they’ll all load and run just fine. I’m currently using it in my regular X1S

    • @pleasuretokill
      @pleasuretokill 3 года назад +2

      @@Ben7seven7 No, for the XSX (not the X1X), there are, in fact, games that will not allow you to play at all off of anything except the internal SSD or the Seagate 1TB SSD aftermarket. (The X1X can play from any HDD.) Even other fast SSDs won't allow them to be read. Examples? AC: Valhalla and Borderlands 3. Those 2 games have to be read from one of those 2 sources, no exceptions.
      Curiously games like Division 2, Halo MCC and The Outer Worlds (which was just patched to full 4k/60/HDR) can be read off of any USB 3.0 drive. I've been going down this rabbit hole all day. There's no one out there that I know with a definitive list of what will and won't work. However when you go to "move" a game from the internal SSD to your external HDD a warning message will pop up in the lower right hand corner if it can only be played on the internal SSD.
      The simple answer that most people use is "if it's optimized for X/S and has that logo, you need to use the internal SSD." This is not true either as I've shown above. It is on a case by case basis and you just have to figure it out game by game. The only two games I own so far that I've found out 100% will not work w/ my new HDD are Borderlands 3 and AC: Valhalla. There may be more, but the 50 or so I've xfered so far all work on the HDD.

    Thanks for the video. I was looking at one of these drives and I always find it interesting to see other peoples "real experiences" of different products.
    That said I generally dislike these kinds of "prepackaged hard drives" as You (normally) don't know exactly what you are getting. And it annoys me that the manufacturers don't include the "Real Drive specifications", which means that they can (and have) switch the "internals" without "informing the consumers" in their "product info"...
    So Yea they can potentially be a "bargain" but unless You are really particular and meticulous You are pretty much "at the manufacturers mercy"...
    Best regards
    P.S. And the fact that they name this "external game drive" with it's "unspecified internals" after a "Top Tier internal drive", i.e. W.D.Black. further increases my annoyance regarding this particular product.

    • @Ben7seven7
      @Ben7seven7  3 года назад +4

      What you say is very true but depending on your needs and application it doesn’t matter too much what’s inside specifically as long as it’s known to be a reliable product. Other than that I do tend to prefer doing my own combinations of enclosure and hard drive or ssd if my choice. Like when I get a new NAS I am going for one without drives and I’ll be supplying my own.

    TL;DW (Too Long, Didn't Watch):
    The main points I took away are stated below:
    - The WD Black is slightly more expensive, trivial speed differences, although it has a more solid feel and design (aluminum I would assume, with rubber feet). This drive does NOT support drive encryption.
    - The My Passport on the other hand is, currently, $10 less for a 5TB external on Amazon (going for roughly $100), versus the $110 alternative of the WD Black 5TB external drive. As mentioned, the speeds are ever so slightly slower with the My Passport, but the real difference seems to lie in the build quality (the My Passport being all plastic, while the WD Black is metal with rubber feet). This drive DOES support drive encryption.
    Hope this helps!

      @@AndrewProTV The WD Black is only slightly faster than the passport and you loose password protecting the drive. Otherwise it has a Metal case vs plastic and little rubber feet for traction.

    Did you consider maybe editing out the long, boring parts so viewers don't have to sit through them? It's like watching paint dry.

    I got 4TB WD Passport (Color:Red) and 5TB WD_BLACK P10. Passport 7/24 running while P10 shutdown itself after a period of time (if its just sitting there doing nothing. It will start again once you just do something with it.). Passport vibrates like crazy, P10 vibrates minimum. Like its non existant. Both Data transfer rates are good.

      That’s a good point to make. Also probably why the WD black has rubber feet and the passport doesn’t.

    Don't get the Passport 5TB. It's SMR and painfully slow to the point of 1MB/s, or simply just stopped transferring. And after a few days from a 3-year warranty. It died. I don't trust Seagate, but my options were limited. It was on sale at a good price. I decided to try the One Touch with Password from Seagate. With formatted APFS and GUID partition. It works very well. The read and write speeds are very consistent and fast. When in use, it is closes to 100MB/s. I thought all SMR drives were the same. Then I tried WD Blue 4TB and WD My Book 6TB. They are SMR. So far, so good. Noting with the low performance yet. I also try the 3.5" 10TB Seagate One Touch Hub. Incredible to see the 200MB/s + from an HDD. I don't think it's SMR. I hope Seagate will last long despite all the consistent reports that they are the first brand to fail in many use cases.
    One thing to note is the Passport is significantly smaller than One Touch with Password. The Passport never gets very hot and has plastic closing. While the One Touch with Password has aluminum with plastic enclosure. I can feel the heat. I think the enclosure really helps dissipate the heat away. The Seagate seems to act as a normal HDD should.
