    There's a great bit in HL:Alyx where you have to avoid an enemy that is also attracted by noise - and then you walk into a room FULL of glass bottles and things you could bump off the shelves. great concept in VR!

    That's what I loved about Thief the Dark Paroject. You couldn't stand up toe-to-toe with a guard. You could stealth kill or knock someone out, but if you engaged in melee with an unwounded guard, you were dead.

    A Queit Place has a game coming out next week. Someone stole your idea! A lot of the features you imagined are actually in it. You have to open doors quietly, open desks quietly, if you knock anything off you die. They throw in the fact that you are asthmatic so if you have to do strenuous things you have to be careful to not over exert yourself, which is sort of the equivalent of a stamina meter (except the punishment is you breathe too loud). You do get a sound meter quite early so you have to constantly watch the level you are making. There is no combat in the game though. They had the same reasoning as you, use a weapon its really loud. You also have things to distract them although in the game I think its standard survival horror in that its things you throw or flares you fire off.
    One cool feature of the game is that if you wear headphones with a microphone the game will react to you, or those around you, making noise. Make a gasp, your dead. Eat a snack too loud, you die. That is actually the feature i thought was coolest. Although living with a small child who might suddenly make noise on the baby monitor would probably rule it out.

    Project Zomboid has cool system for choosing negative and positive attributes. There are points, you get few for free, and you can get more for choosing bad attributes. You can pick slightly overweight or weak or lousy(louder looting) to get more stealth to avoid enemies better or to run faster or to have more room in backpacks and stuff like that. You can also spend them on "profession" which will give you initial points to skills.
    Seems like a game Tim would like, but he does not do reviews :-)

      7 Days to Die is still nothing like I Am Legend. I have often thought about gameplay based upon the process of clearing out areas during the day while gathering supplies, and the danger of entering dark buildings (This part taken from the 2007 movie). There would of course have to be some larger goal to work toward.

  • @lhfirex
    @lhfirex 2 дня назад

    It's not specifically tied to A Quiet Place, but having a scenario where monsters create strict gameplay restrictions like that would be interesting to have them adapt over time to a few of the tricks you do. Basically a way to prevent you from having one solution for all problems, because if you do it too much, they get wise to it and it doesn't work anymore. You could even have a further tier of it where they've adapted beyond "ignore this player tactic" to "pretend to fall for it and then use that behavior to bait the player into getting attacked." But a system like this would encourage players to use a variety of means to deal with the monsters, whatever they were. Otherwise, even in a survival horror game, the most efficient way of getting past obstacles is always going to be the one people choose.

    I like the idea of having charisma as a trait or something you can use a handful of times in unique situations in a campaign. This could be convincing someone to let you stay in their shelter while the night passes, which could make the next segment a bit easier by passing through the area in the day when there’s potentially less aliens. Could also use it to barber for extra supplies that help you remain stealthy or support your parkour etc. Not necessary but I always like small touches like that myself.

    "Project Zomboid: Sound of Silence"
    A lot of the mechanics you described reminded of Project Zomboid so I'm thinking something a Total Conversion mod might me cool. The possibility of being granted official permission to use A Quite Place IP seems very low. However, the idea of a TC mod for Zomboid with custom maps, mechanics, NPCs and expanded stealths seems doable. Might be a bit too ambitious for a single modder, maybe small mod team? I'd play it if it existed. Hey, all y'all modders out there, there's your next project!

    The setting proved to be unpopular based upon reviews and comments of The Quiet Place : The Road Ahead. While part of the critisism was directed at the heavily scripted AI, the underlying complaint was how tedious gameplay became due to the constant need to remain quiet.
    I suspect this is the same reason why the stealth genre has become so niche because the majority of gamers are just looking for a steady flow of dopamine and if they're not being constantly rewarded they lose interest. On the flipide you have the gamers that comprise those that were introduced to gaming through mobile titles which are looking for cosy games or something to relax with which again means stealth is a no-go.
    I feel the Quiet Place would need to be set up in such a way that players need a break from the tension. I'd wager the problem with The Road Ahead stems from the gameplay loop just never deviating from the constant pressure except for cut scenes where players become detatched from the experince. As such you'd probably need something like the Director/Actor AI dynamic from Alien Isolation where the Director manages the tdnsion to avoid emotional fatigue.

    I began a recent playthrough on the zombie game "Project Zomboid" with custom settings that resembled Tim's game idea from the video.
    I made the zombies with random strength, vision, hearing (including pinpoint hearing, from a long distance), intelligence (some zombies try to break door and windows, others can simply open them) and speed (from crawlers to sprinters).
    Just to equilibrate a little bit, I enabled the option to make zomboid more active during night (which makes them all slow shamblers during day, but you will certainly will meet too many sprints to handle at night).
    I also began the game with the lowest strength and endurance possible, as if I was playing a surviving becoming stronger and stronger as he survives one more day in this apocalypse, and after some months, I'm aiming for a nomad experience, traveling through all of the game's map.
    It has been a highly intense playthrough, with a lot of stealth, hiding at night and taking care to not draw attentions from too many zombies, especially a little before night arrives.
    Really fun. Recommend the experience to everyone.

    Converting a movie or TV show into a game? I recently had that thought. I was watching the TV show Narcos. I have played many Grand Theft Auto (GTA) games. While watching Narcos, I thought that that world would make a good RPG. I know that GTA is not an RPG, but GTA created the context by which to understand that Narcos could transfer into the game world. Within Narcos, the "factions" are pre-loaded: there are various cartels and various law enforcement agencies. Also, there is no shortage of maps and travel modes. So, you start as a low-level farmer re-directed into weed due to economic necessity, and you begin to move up the ranks to building an empire.

    It's funny you mention A Quiet Place game, as one just got released a couple days ago. It seems to have taken some inspiration from Alien Isolation, and stealth games. Sadly, it doesn't look that good, a common theme with converting a game, from another medium. Honestly, I'd much prefer playing your version, though I can imagine that the costs would spiral. Game Idea reminds me of Alien Isolation but if you removed the Aliens ability to see. One thing you didnt bring up which I think would be cool is adding NPC's maybe you have to fight them as queitly as possible or even barter and trade. Silent fights would be so interesting as well as takedowns. You are fighting a guy and he knows hes about to die or lose so he screams and you have to choose if you will kill and finish them off quickly as possible, or just run away and see him get attacked by the monster.

    But the idea of using flaws as some sort of custom difficulty level is innovative. There is no easy, standard and hard difficulty level, but a player can choose flaws to increase difficulty. The idea about flaws has to much potential. I'm still not sure how to implement it, but I'll figure it out. In my case space ships would have to have the "flaws", not people, and I assume they'd have to be both positive and negative. Maybe they are acquired when fighting and taking damage, causing things like "deformed hull." I am also torn between giving players agency to prevent them (and allow them to rotate through until they get what they want) or to force them to take what they get. Making it choosable could also be a viable solution... just how?

    You often talk about loosing the GURPS license during the development of Fallout. I wonder why you didn't foresee this during development? You often talk about it as if it was a sudden event.

    5:50 No, i don't like respawning aliens coming outside of the map. It's unfair. It may be true to the film, but it is also unfair. I want to be able to eliminate all the aliens within the map and then have peace and quiet. That would be possible with an island.

    • @Sauvva_
      @Sauvva_ 2 дня назад

      it is not unfair, it is caused by player actions, and could just as well reduce the danger level of a nearby area, so you can do it on purpose, there are too many aliens in map A ? go to map B and make a lot of noise

      @@Sauvva_ By map I mean the entire game world. You can't leave it. Sectors are something completely different.

      @@loach- If this is the only thread in your game, you are doing something wrong. Respawning enemies out of nowhere is usually a bad idea. It breaks the idea of clearing the map.

    Have you ever thought about games that use disabilities as mechanics?
    Like a game about daredevil where the screen is only populated as the environment/enemies make sound?

    • @CainOnGames
      @CainOnGames  2 дня назад +2

      The closest I have gotten to using disabilities in games were flaws in The Outer Worlds, although traits in Fallout and backgrounds in Arcanum can provide disabilities too, as well as any low attributes in most of my games.

    A quiet place is a world for bobby traps, mines and drones. Thus it is possible to win as long as you don't run out of mines, booby traps and drones. It's actually pretty easy. You need a 500 kg bomb, a noisemaker that makes as much noise as possible and a remote detonator, and you've destroyed 50 of these aliens. This is what it would look like in reality.
