Well done for knowing when to stop. Don't beat yourself up.🙈 Learn from your mistakes and move on. Looking forward to your next project. 👍.
Yes! Thank you!
A lot of these era car’s surprisingly are starting to rot which I thought would still be solid.
@@SavingSalvagesomeone else will get a good project to finish you've done so much work bruh understandable that you've had enough top marks for your honesty and humility 👍💯
Blessings to you and your family from Glasgow ✝️🙏🏴🇬🇧
@@SavingSalvage will u take 2k
Dean, the amount of work gone into this car is unreal. We've all been there and as you say nobody is perfect. Lets see the other projects that can be saved back on the channel 👍
Just don’t buy Seat’s
@@broken12367i have the same yr cupra.. Not a spot on it.. Just unlucky it's that bed..
And not the cerbera..😂
It takes courage to stop and re-evaluate your options. So big cheer to you! Appreciate your skills and honesty 👍
Love these videos shows the TRUTH about fixing cars it's not all as easy as some RUclipsrs make out love your work Dean
@@GreaseMonkeysGarage ain’t that the truth.
@@GreaseMonkeysGarage aches in muscles you never knew you had
@@GreaseMonkeysGarage Get some cutproof workgloves, they're cheap and they changed my life.
You can't put price on learning from your mistakes, at least this lesson was learnt on a relatively cheap car and not something in the tens of thousands! Keep up the good work Dean
I’ve been watching Deans content since the first Skoda wagon he bought & I had the same car, & I’m seriously impressed with the content, diversity, & success rate of the salvaged cars that have followed.
Sometimes you make a mistake & no amount of effort or money will get a satisfactory result. At least you’ve still got lots of good salvageable parts for other cars in the VW/Audi/Skoda/SEAT family & future projects.
Please continue with more cars like this, there is very little content that shows viewers everything the way you do. The ups & downs are so relatable for me, & it shows you’re human like the rest of us. Great little series on this anyway & I’ve learnt heaps. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺!
I like the old classic car ressurection videos saved from scraping you do like the golf before.i liked the series very well!one of the best you done on youtube!keep up the good work its a blast every time i see a new video👌🍻
Not only did you learn the hard way, but we all have now learn’t from your experience. This thanks to your honesty and courage to share your mistakes. Hopefully someone watching this can save same money in a similar situation.
Tough luck Dean and after all your hard work too. I'll keep everything crossed for you that you dont loose out too much on this one.
Love all your work and honesty, you are someone I would buy a used car from. Love the channel and good luck with the TT and Porsche, looking forward to the completion.
Back in the 1970s and 80s (I don’t remember before that) cars used to rust like that after just a few years. You were very lucky to get 10 years out of a car, and rust bubbles would often appear within three or four years.
Really did not expect to see it on a newer car though, even if exposed to seaside salt.
Enjoy your videos, though, always impressed with your skills, knowledge and sheer hard work.
Always on your side mate , that is a wise and professional decision. You missed it to start with thats that.
Lets see how well you can come out of it I think thats the game now. cheers and keep up the good work.
Hi Dean. My heart goes out to you. So much work and apart from knowledge for the future, no reward. Good luck selling what you can. Anyway, onward and upward, what's next for us to enjoy? Get a good nights sleep and put it all in the past. Cheers, Bob
Don't be too hard on yourself, the work you do in my opinion is first class and you have very high standards. I too have made that sort of mistake but also l have been very proud of other work l have done.
Keep going Dean as your channel is great.
Well done Dean as always enjoyed the series . As has already been said great thing about your stuff is you show it as it is and don't edit all the problems out. Thanks for the heads up on yfood as well those shakes are great and safe a lot of time.
Easy to say in hindsight but with the amount of rust found chances were probably pretty high for the front to be as bad. Loved the series anyway, think you made the right choice walking away before you get in deeper
Wow loved this set of videos your work is top job and you know your limits a very proud mechanic....spot on mate ..
I'm gutted for you mate, I know the feeling, had a FRTDI 170 one of these , put some work in it , couldn't get it through mot or get it running properly so ended up taking a big loss on it, sometimes you just accept the learning curve
Gutted for you mate, the car sounded amazing and you put a lot of hard graft into it. Looking forward to your next project.❤
Great learning curve right there.. well done for broadcasting it, lots will learn. Very brave of you. No shame... I'm in Suffolk, spend some time with me I'll point you in the right direction for welding and equipment needed with budget in mind. There's some great bits of welding kit out there for not much money.
Guarranteed someone else will buy it to do it up now with all the work you've done! Good decision on stopping now instead of continuing on to find more issues.
I do not want to sound negative but I saw on day 1 that the Cupra was a money pit and when you showed the underneath . how could the whole car not be rotten? great work as usual thou. love this channel. NO MORE MONEY PITS.
Mistakes are just life lessons on the road to success! Love the channel and keep up the good work 👏
Respect for going as far as you did. Your skills and time better spent on more viable projects.. we all have made similar mistakes but takes balls to admit defeat even if it costs you money still good watchable series 🤛
We live and learn, thanks for the open and honest content.
Keep going, bud! Always loved these cars! Always wanted one to! Hang in there.
If your local to Oxfordshire I have a welder you could borrow 👌
brave taking this on, good move to know when to stop. live and learn and move on!
Loving the videos. Have attempted a bit of everything myself on car's. You inspiring me to possibly take that step further. Have the space. Really want a cheap lift.....ny suggestions please. Keep up great work
My Automotech lift was cheap brand new! I think around £1800 or something silly cheap. That was 5 years ago though.
Tough call to make but it’s the right one. Sell whatever parts you can and move onto the next. This is actually a great series with this Cupra as it’s very relevant to many projects everyday people go through and shows it’s not all as easy as other RUclipsrs make out. You’re real and people respect that. You’ll learn from it chin up Dean 👊🏼
Lesson learned on that one unfortunately, we have all been there you are not alone. Stick to what you do best and stay away from rusty sh!T boxes. I was told years ago buy a clean car with a stuffed engine and not a rotten car with a good engine. Easier to replace the engine than try and rebuild a rusty shell. Keep up the good work Dean. 👍
Keep going buddy loving your work 😆Unfortunate lesson but a good one. 👍🏻
We live and learn mate…good on you for giving it a go..👏🏻 on this the next one.
Bad luck mate these things happen, was a bit worried what other secrets it was hiding when you first showed that rear end, it could’t have just been affected at the rear that bad. Onwards to the next build and hopefully you recover your cash from this one.
I’m hoping you get another Leon fr or cupra back on the channel throughly enjoyed this series 😊
Really feel for you Dean but put it down to experience and a big learning curve 😫👍
Absolutely
Good vid. No flam .no acting .just the truth ,Excellent
Enjoyed the video, you made the right decision. Can't believe its so rusty, mine is a 2008 had from new and no rust at all, SEAT Dealer tells me its spot on. i do pamper it FSH etc but even so. Subbed.
Exact reason i got rid of my leon, just had to draw a line and cut my losses, shame as i loved it. Great videos though keep it up!
I fully agree with pulling the plug with this one.
maybe invest in an inverter welder for any projects that need welding in the future, they are much better than gasless.
Remember, it's not how you fall...! Think you got it right, learn and move on. Every opportunity brings some risk. Ce la vie. At least you're trying. Keep up the great work 👍
You’ve done a good job to the car, good bit of work done to it already
It’s not that big of a job replacing that part of the chassi I’ve done a lot worse than that, I definitely wouldn’t be scrapping it after all that work done to it, it be worth more when it’s finished rather than scrapping it
Dean, I am the same as you. I learn from making Mistakes. At least you wont make the same mistake again. Im sure someone will want this car. On to the next one! Hows the camper? How was your Holiday? 👍
Can't win em all. You have taken on some massive challenges in the past and been successful so don't think you should beat yourself up with this one. Been some good content and you've added to your wide range of experience👍
Feel for you mate. Looking forward to more content keep it coming !
You have to do what you feel is best for you. It's a shame because I have an 06 Leon TFSI Sport which I've had from new, and was enjoying and learning from you taking the Cupra apart. Fortunately mine doesn't have the rust issues.
Feel sorry for you Dean, but you did an awesome job for your subscribers to be honest - was great to see the work etc, but clearly theres a lesson to check the structural stuff next time. Hopefully you can sell the bits you bought to recoup some of the money. Great video series, but hey sometimes it is what it is and some cars are just destined for the scrapheap. Look forward to the next one mate!
Good call !! i know it must have been a difficult decision, but you defiantly made the right choice Dean
Proffesional judgment here, proper genuine mechanic
Feel bad for you dude. I hope the great content is a bit of a consolation.
Onwards and upwards 👍🏻.
Nice job buddy, it just sad it turned that way, but unfortunately that’s how we learn as you say. What can you do? Chin up and move on bud 💩 happens as we all know, some day we win some day we lose.
Keep up the good work and don’t let this one take away you passion to cars.
All the best to you and you family bud!
Right decision , we all make mistakes with the best intentions and as you say it is also the way we learn to avoid making them again .
Failure is the best teacher! I can guarantee that you'll never make that mistake again. Lesson learned and a great journey. 👍
Yep. And when We fall the Ground is always there to Catch Us 😂😂
Been there mate know how you feel. Better to jump ship than go further down the rabbit hole. Good content tho. 👍🏼
Wow it turned out a right rustbucket !!! think you done the right thing to stop ! as you say where does it end !!!
Massive respect for knowing when to throw the towel in, I'm sure someone will take it off you,
I just about to follow through on my commitment a d get myself a teeners worth of S3 (£9:95) to be precise i hope you haven’t offered cash alternative you done qhat everyone wanted and put it through again but think most asked for no cash alternative
You bugger just seen you have 8k alternative....... you should have listened to us 😮
Don't give up, I would like to see more content on it Please
I found on my old gas-less wielder it was too powerful running of the mains but running it off a small generator worked much better. I ended up getting a gas one as a replacement :)
working at a second hand car site when a car comes in that the reg starts with an 's' the first thing we do is stick it in the air, and even thou you do get the odd one (usually the ones that headed south early) they tend to pretty much all look like that, lol
Gud Jerb Dean. I feel bad for you, especially as i was one of those that said fix it when you first got it. Onwards and upwards mate.
Aww man gutted for you, Great content never the less.
Have more of an investigation in future, ive suscribed im loving it.
With doing restoration work. It's always twice as bad as it looks sometimes much worse. With modern car's of today you have to be careful not to compromise the crumple zones with over welding and use a proper spot welding machine as much as possible be they are made to brake on impact where welding is so much stronger.
Feel for you Dean. Don't beat yourself up over it, if you haven't made a mistake you haven't lived and belive me mate I've done a lot of living 😅 💯👍
Gutted mate thats the way it goes sometimes hope you have better luck with the next one respect to you
thankyou Dean,,you shouldnt be critisized at all for this project everyday is a school day,,
ive followed you for a very very long time and im 100% sure this is the 1st time youve made this choice,,
you could of done all that work and you can bet the mot fella would of found something else.
so head up and onto the next one mate,,👌👍💪
Your good at what you do mate👌🏽 im sure u can fix it... personaly after all the money put in to it🤔 projects a project💪🏽
Totally gutted, loved this Leon. Such a shame. Hopefully someone takes it on and repairs it. Wish I could.
Gutted Dean! Great job on the bits that you had done, better getting stripping the good parts!!
You've done the best thing Dean, you just don't know what else you're going to find.👍
I’ve seen UK 2008 VAG vehicles not far off this when abused, lesson learnt stay clear in the future dean and stick to the later stuff.
Hey Dean do what you did to the T6 bus. buy a front quarter and get the welder to do the welding
Sorry about the cupra bro
.. but the amount of work you've put in to it I'm sure someone will want to finish it 👍👍
Hi mate. Fully stripping and inspecting cars before you start anything is number one.
The road salt in Scotland is a stronger mixture than the rest of the UK uses because Scotland gets harsher winters. It could be a seaside car, but the stronger salt mixture won't have helped.
You called this one correctly, there is a learning package here for most to benefit from. Rust is the enemy of almost every car on the road. Clearly with hindsight, the rust on the wings was a pointer to trouble, the state of the rear suspension amplified the 'rotten' message. This is one for the great motorway in the sky, or more simply, the scrapyard. If you try to recover the value of the parts that you installed, how buoyant is the market for a one 'man breaker' business?
Looking forward to a tutorial on how to strip a car for parts. What parts are worth the hassle etc.
Shed a tear for you there Dean! 😢 Part it out and try to recoup some funds. Great video!
Such a shame, you'd done such a good job on the rear subframe etc, it was looking like it'd turn into a great result. Onwards and upwards!
If I were you, I’d park it up and see if there’s a decent cheap shell in any auctions then when time permits, swap everything over. Like you say the good bits on it are very good.
The analogy.....all frills and no knickers....comes to mind !
Learning by doing is the best way 👍🏻. As you say lesson learned.
Sunk Cost Fallacy: the phenomenon whereby a person is reluctant to abandon a strategy or course of action because they have invested heavily in it, even when it is clear that abandonment would be more beneficial.
The amount of time you have invested in something shouldn't be a deciding factor in calling it quits. It can be a hard pill to swallow, but we've all been there! Onto the next one mate :)
That’s speaking sense. You did the right thing Dean.
10:28 😂lol I feel your pain bro, unlucky on this one 😢😢😢at least it’s halfway way there.
Knew it was a dog from day 1..seaside rust
My Volkswagen Golf 4 had a few rust bubbles on the front left wing. After returning from a seaside vacation I noticed that all the rust bubbles transformed into rust holes and many other rust bubbles formed. I was hoping to get another year out of that wing but now I have to replace it.
All that hard work sorry it turned out bad for you. Hope you get your money back from the vehicle great video
We all come across these types of errors in work. Good learning lesson, next time if it's rusty, strip it back further and assess before starting.
Dean sometimes things don’t go to plan just dust yourself down and on to the next great content as usual as you can see from the comments everyone is behind you and so grateful for your videos keep it up
Ohh Dean what a shame! Lesson learned though and investigate projects more thoroughly before committing to parts & labour. Good content for the channel all the same & I’m sure you won’t fall down that hole again. You win some & lose some I guess
Dean, that really sucks. The best case scenario would be to get it finished to get as much money back as possible to minimize your losses. Maybe your welder guy could sort it out for you. I don't see it being any different to repairing accident damage. It seems a shame to get rid after all the work and parts you've put into it but I won't think any less of you whatever you decide to do.
So at the end the "Mistakes " are not really a bad thing, it teach you a lesson for another project in the future , but i can understand the frustration at the end when you have to put your tools on the floor because on a totally rusted car like this one. Sell maybe for parts and make at least some money off it.Never the less still like this project and looking forward for the next video !
Yeah it’s more frustration at the work I put into the rear end that the most annoying 😂
Gutted for you mate. The same happened to me restoring a ford puma. I spent loads of money and time but the car was too far gone structurally.
You win some and you will loose some , best to know when to stop and cut your losses and move on to the next, mistakes are there to be made and you learn from them. I think you made the right decision to abort project, someone will either repair it and put it on the road of it will be an ideal parts car
Great video and good call mate
I live in scotland....at the seaside! So what i tend to do is slap waxoil underneath, every couple of years. Slows things down a bit.....but yh, sobering.
20:20 hindsight - if the rear sub-frame was that bad, presumably the rest of the underneath had experienced the same rust-inducing conditions. Just have to put it behind you.
Can't win them all mate, was still good content regardless! Fair play for knowing when to pull the handle.
At least it was yellow. All the rust would have been a lot harder to spot in dark colour........
But when I saw the rear end underneath I did think it looked bad before you opened up the front chassis leg.
Love the thumbnail though lol.
Get yourself a gas welder, weldequip seem to be pretty good for small scale like you. if you only weld now and again get hobby weld 5 gas its rent free keep as long as you like. a nice co2/argon mix is what you want.
Break it for parts id love to see a mini series where you total up how much you can make on a car in parts
Good try, but sometimes everything doesn't go according to plan! I personally wouldn't have touched a car that looked like that underneath, but that's more because I just hate fixing rust... 😊
Hope you at least get the £2.5k! 👍
