    This is a meta-comment on several "half LDU" increment comments.
    First, as pointed out, if each layer is one LDU smaller, and you want it centered, then each layer cannot connect to the next layer up -- you have to connect to two layers up. This means you have essentially two separate towers, co-constructed, and they are not connected -- the second tower is not attached to the base, and only held by the "adjacency". It means that each layer needs smooth tops, as the studs cannot be connected. But all that is doable.
    It means that the insides have to have all the magic, and LOTS of space -- each tower layer needs to connect up two layers higher, and not disturb the other tower's internals.
    All of this is doable. And if the "hidden strangeness" is inside the layers, and half LDU per-side difference, you are nearly as smooth as the smooth obelisk. In fact, I want to know how you made the outside of that smooth obelisk without any visible steps even as you have to remove studs in the process -- you can probably do something similar to make the outside of this monstrosity smooth, even as smooth tops between layers does not actually attach anything.

    • @bricksculpt
      @bricksculpt  13 часов назад +3

      Lots of good info there to consider. If you want to see how the smooth Obelisk is made watch the Obelisk series it's all show in the videos.

  • @Blutzen
    @Blutzen 15 часов назад +7

    As "clean" as the smooth-faced obelisk is, I do definitely prefer the stepped version, personally; it just looks more 'Lego' to me, and that feels like the point of making an obelisk out of Lego in the first place, instead of just 3D-printing one with perfectly smooth sides or whatever.

  • @undercomposition

  • @davidfogas
    @davidfogas День назад +19

    Nah you should totally do this with a quarter plate difference (1 ldu on each side), I don't think it would be an impossible challenge, you definitely have the knowledge and skills imo. Even what you've already done on the obelisk project so far is crazy in my eyes.

    • @bricksculpt

    Cool video! Obelisk 1.0 definitely looks much more solid!
    Also in the video you say that if you make layers with a difference of 1 LDU, then the gradation on the obelisk will be 0.5 LDU. Yes, but then you will not be able to connect these layers as needed, using the "standard" types of connection, since we do not have elements that will allow us to go to the level of 0.5 LDU (by definition, 1 LDU is already the minimum)

    • @Pystro
      @Pystro День назад +1

      No, they won't be attached to the core or flush against the core. Best you could do is to center them using wedges and gravity. But they currently are also not attached, merely sitting flush against the core.

    • @Maeshup
      @Maeshup День назад +2

      It would probably have to be like this: Layer 1, 3, 5, 7 and so on are connected and layer 2, 4, 6, 8, and so on are connected separately. Maybe there is one layer where you could connect both steps (almost) perfectly together.

    • @bricksculpt
      @bricksculpt  13 часов назад +2

    The smooth-sided obelisk does look much nicer as an artistic creation, but I think the evened-out stairstep obelisk is a better "Build it yourself" model as the sections make for natural progression steps and it's much easier to assemble both from parts and if it gets knocked over and breaks.

    Here's a suggestion for a brick to focus on: part # 3386, Brick, Round 1 x 1 x 2/3 Half Circle Extended with Stud on Side. I'm honestly not sure WHY Lego made such a part but it can be useful in spite of how oddly specific it is in its differences from common bricks (SNOT, *partly* rounded AND only 2/3 tall? It's a very very odd combo). Seriously, this brick is the Lego equivalent of Mariner telling Boimler she was afraid he might have been trapped in a dystopian San Fransisco.

    I wonder if the central structure of a tiered-step obelisk could be strengthened by simply repeating those 1-20 LDU steps from the last video on all four sides of the obelisk. That might allow for a singular, solid core (with lots of goblets), but no more precarious connection points between tiers

      I love the idea. Corners will be a challenge.

  • @reddblackjack
    @reddblackjack День назад +1

    Amazing! I couldn't imagine the ½ LDU perimeter. It's not only a brain bend, it probably isn't as easy as it sounds. I like the quick fix to the old obelisk. Other than the obvious thing I usually say, I got another idea. Make the layers like you did here, but that each layer is a nice design. Like a simple short QR code for the bottom layer or a smiley face or an arrow or spiral two colors around or whatever you think looks cool and that you can pull off.
    So that it's 'just an obelisk ' (LoL) and comes apart to show a different design in each layer. Or even have the layers look like letters that spell something, such as BRICK SCULP IDK, I'm trying to help you amp it up even more.

    • @remus_lupin
      @remus_lupin День назад +1

      He can't. Every layer is already a complicated design, to get the taper & create a core to attach to. That's why he didn't finish the cores: he didn't have time to design them, fully, in time for the video. Each step requires a custom core.

    If this is as far as you can take the obelisk with something with discrete connection points like System (bricks, tiles, plates), I wonder how far you can take it with something with continuous connection points like Technic (beams, axels, pins) or Bionicle/Hero Factory/Mixels (ball joints).

  • @transponderings
    @transponderings День назад +5

    I presume layers with a 1 LDU increment would be impossible to centre, as otherwise you’d have a way of producing 0.5 LDU increments, which contradicts the definition of LDU.

    I don't know much about LDUs, and others have already mentioned subLDU increments. that said, if you could center a 1 LDU difference so it's a half LDU on each side, then that technique could be used to make half LDU differences anywhere. Really you should not be thinking of the total difference in width between levels but the difference in position between abutting segments.

    • @bricksculpt

    This just means that it IS possible to do 1 LDU differences in layers, and I'm wondering who will be crazy enough to try it out.
