    Excellent, excellent summary. "Strazzaria" has its origin in "strazzi" or (contemporary Italian) "stracci", literally "rags." Famously, the Jews of Rome were limited to this particular profession, thus it is not surprising that it was also the norm in Venice. Of course in real life things are always more lax than in the letter of the law, thus slowly Jews became dealers of used items in general, and this tied in perfectly with the profession of small money lenders. They were basically running pawn shops. The institution of "Monte di Pieta" described in the video were institutional pawn shop. directly under the aegis of the various local city governments, where poor people could turn in their valuables for cash, and eventually redeem the items for a small interest. Jewish money lenders were complementary to this segment of the economy.
    In Rome in particular, for the longest time, Jews, who started as 'stracciaioli' (same as strazzari) expanded the business and became "rigattiere" (sing. form), i.e. used stuff dealers with permanent stable shops. The most entrepreneurial refined their market and specialized in "antichita'", especially jewelry and art.

    I'm sorry, you can't keep putting out these very interesting videos without getting some feedback. Expanding on how Jews were able to maneuver within the restrictions of being only money-lenders or second hand salesmen....basic information...fascinating details. Their ability to survive: admirable to say the least. Their ability to circumvent: does my freedom loving heart good lol. Once again you get a second hand star (gotta support people surviving oppression)!

      Something to consider. Nations come and go along with their ethnic religion. Consider present day China. Buddhism lives but not as its nation's religion. It's considered backwards to modernity just as Hinduism.

    I stayed in the Ghetto of Venice and found it to be absolutely charming.
    Such a different atmosphere to the rest of accommodation in Venice.
    Much quieter and I loved watching families strolling around in this area. More authentic and less touristy.

    I watched an interesting historical drama called Cathedral by the Sea, demonstrated corruption of laws in medieval Barcelona area and counterbalancing legal silver linings- and introduced me to a new term-- cambistry, (which the cambist did learn essentially through a Jew, Chasdai Crescas) which I guess is also money lending, but also apparently involved real percentage purity of coinage speculation, based on 'these coins equal these coins' equivocations from ever-new potential royal coinage decrees. Im wondering if cambistry was maybe also connected to the Jews being servi camerai [sic] sometimes having monopolies on rarer precious metals as you've mentioned on occasion.

      Did this include or was this the practice of shaving fine amounts of silver and gold coins? Each coin had a legal weight and very incredible weight instruments were that sensitive back then.

    • @davidsavage6324
      @davidsavage6324 2 года назад

      @@debrapaulino918 I think I was describing de facto fraud whereas shaving would constitute bona fide de jure fraud. A king declares his silver marks are worth a foreign mark even though his mark is only 70 percent silver, the other is 90- well the royal decree might unfair but that's reality. Regardless of how pure the coin is, shaving would be shaving the edges of whatever the king's agent minted in the same size and weight as every other one (which I think is where the ridges on edges of coins originated).

    I did a talk on it for tisha b’av
