Hi Nun. Scales and Gauges. Not sufficient space here to go into detail. Needs a couple of pages. The best advice I can offer is to ask that question on the forum at my large scale. There are a lot of very helpful folk there. Good luck and thanks for checking my site
my only issue with live steam is the lack of real throttle control, every time i see one they seem to be slow to start rolling then take off like rockets. I enjoy slow moving steam locomotives, where you can see all the rods and connecting rods moving.
Hi Thanks for interest. Try both the Aster USA and UK websites. I know the UK site (Andrew) has an electric version although that is not as exciting as live steam as you know. Regards Trevor
Okay, so I model N and HO and I have to say I have almost no knowledge on how G scale works. So I'm assuming that this doesn't run on electricity from the track like other scales? Or do some locomotives? Nice layout and nice Big Boy
Is it *actually* too fast, though? Big Boys were pretty fast; I tried to count the wheel rotations (but not very hard :) ) and I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to figure out how a full size one would have been traveling at that RPM. I mean, there are videos of a Challenger going around 70mph.
Trevor, I'm am just an old collector of post-war Lionel trains and I don't understand what 'Gas-Fired' means. Can you please explain? BTW: This is a very cool layout. Thank You.
Hi Thanks for comments. As you can see, this video was just a bit of fun in a friends garden. Some folk have commented that the Big Boy was travelling too fast to be realistic. You will appreciate that holding a camera limits your freedom to adjust the cab controls although there is a second and more recent video on you tube showing the motion moving very slowly. Of course there is always RC as used in Gscale but in G1 it is thought better to control your engine manually.
Wonderful job fellas. Awesome sight even in a small scale. Are the hoppers actually full of a ballast type material? Did the passenger train run out of steam at the end? I like your idea of elevating the track. My Sons want a garden railway but our dogs would destroy a ground level track. Have to give your idea some thought. What materials were used to build the elevated railbed?
Thanks for comments but this is not really G scale as it is 1/32. More G1 I realize that scales can be a bit of a minefield but the original Gscale was LGB at around 1;22 which would be far too big for Standard gauge USA locos.hence most makers in the USA go for 1;29 (American large scale) but not Aster which is generally 1/32 All the best
Hi.as mentioned in the video the Bigboy shown is made by Aster. The other maker is Accucraft. Both have informative websites. For general information and for other makers link in with mylargescale.com and go onto their forum Regards
it is 1/32 scale which normally is referred to as Gauge 1 G scale is a general term with scales ranging from 1/22 -1/29. They all run on 45mm gauge track however
Hi Thanks for interest. As I have had this engine for some years now I suggest that you check out the Aster Hobbies website for current prices and availability Regards...
There was an excellent model at Dobwalls in UK - now in Australia but apparently not in use - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dobwalls_Adventure_Park#/media/File:Dobwalls_4008.JPG
the big boy insane it cost 15 hundred dollars (1500) and has to have special track to actulay run because of the shear size i would love to have one but don't have the track or the money to get it
James Surber Hi James Are you clockwork or electric? To slow with a ‘live ‘ BIgboy and you have to stop for a hand pump! With 70psi up you need to keep the axle pump working hard Try it with a camera in your hand and let me know? Maybe I will hear the bang from here....... Regards Trevor
Proof of Big Boy's awesomeness it scaled down and is hauling big load but still has steam to vent.
Now that's impressive!
that is so cool!
Union Pacific Bigboys....Simply the best....end of!
Good idea to elevate the track. You can enjoy your trains at eye level. Nice job!
Hi Thanks for comments 0n the Big Boy
I don't know current values but when new around 15 years ago I think they were around $9000
All the best

The Aster Bigboy is gas fired.
Aster have designed the burner to be extremely effective as you can see on the video!
I agree, but once a Bigboy is rolling you sure don't get in the way!
Great layout!! I love it!!!!

I still want this locomotive number 4024 the Big boy
that is incredibly cool, what is the fuel, nitro model fuel, gas, steam powered or what?
Hi Trev nice layout!!!. u might be the guy who knows the answer to this question, what is the larger Scale and or Gauge "G Scale" or "Gauge 1"???.
Thanks for comments

Oh wow Casey jones got a bigger and faster engine, looks like that 5:00 mail will be on time
wow!!!!!!!!
Fascinating!!
One gauge is somewhere between O and G right? Never seen a true non-electric loco this small! Excellent!
Trevor,
I'm am just an old collector of post-war Lionel trains and I don't understand what 'Gas-Fired' means. Can you please explain? BTW: This is a very cool layout. Thank You.
where did you get that? i seriously want one
its kinda sad that a mail train and an express engine are getting massively outran by a big boy
atleast some bigboys know how to keep steam up

If you can get one for $9K there would be a line to purchase it...
NdeM logo was former NATIONAL RAILWAYS OF MEXICO here seen in the loco that remembers me NIAGARA model hauling a streamlined 20th Century Limited.
