i loved this whole arc on the VN. and even tho 1st season of the anime is kinda slow (but thats how the history actually goes) season 2 was way better than expected and they did it justice with the mech fights

WTH is the design of the p90 guns? The magazine is so far forward that the bullets have hardly any time to get rotation from the rifling of the barrel for accuracy and basically no room for the expanding gas to travel to give the bullet any lethal power. There is a reason guns have the magazine center or toward the rear of a firearm. Edit: stand corrected on the top mag was not regular rounds but a grenade launcher, so the whole gun is great.
When I watched this series I noticed moments where some of the tsf didn't need to get destroyed and could have avoided getting murked easily had they just... Moved instead of standing still and letting themselves get jumped.

Yeah, Blue Gender could have inspired it. So did Evangelion (just look at the Takemikazuchi's design). That being said the story is a real oldie from 2003. @neverbeenbetter2903 I'd say Muv Luv is a lot more psychological and realism depends on what you are looking at. Politics and military realism goes for Muv Luv. Mechs are more grounded in Blue Gender at least.
