I can't remember the specifics, but members of the Japanese army staged a coup to kidnap the shogun, because they believed members of the Japanese government were selling out their country. Long story short the main cast is assigned to escort the shogun to safety, and they end up clashing with the insurgents. The US and UN show up to protect the shogun, and the Japanese see them as invaders and cowards who abandoned them in a previous battle, so they attack them. I hope I remembered that right, there was a lot of background politics.

The eternal Japanese Angst of being someones vassal and being colonized by the US/The West, so a part of the armed forces stages a coup, leading to a few hour long civil war as the loyalists and american forces present try to extract the VIP and the Rebels try to capture them. Kinda similiar to that Coup that was planned back during WWII when part of the Imperial Army feared the Emperor would sign a surrender, so to preserve his (and the countries) honor and possibly his life (he would have been trialed as war criminal) they planned on locking him up "for his own good". Then the nukes happened and all of that got thrown over.
despite the rest of this cringe harem anime, this fight blows 99% of the entire fights of the gundam series out of the water. Gundam always feels like op dudes destroying everyone else. Hell even thunderbolt feels like a 1v1 moba lmao
