    No need to use decimals. You can use integers and get the same answer. Eliminates possible misplacement of a decimal point.
    10x + (35)(80) = 30(x + 80) gives the same answer of 20 liters.

    In East Asia, 5th graders are taught to solve this type of problems with arithmetic. This one is a ratio problem. Algebra is NOT needed. In America, that kind of math teaching is totally missing in elementary schools.

      80(0.35/0.3 - 1) ÷ (1 - 0.1/0.3) = 80 × 1/6 ÷ 2/3 = 20
      If you learned elementary math in Asia and learned well, you will understand.

    I used a combination of the fraction conversion and the Gaussian Elimination method to solve this problem.
    First, I converted each decimal into fractions...
    x/10+4/5(35)=3y/10 _eq1_
    x+80=y _eq2_
    10[x/10+28=3y/10] (Multiply eq. 1 by 10)
    x+280=3y
    x+80=y (New set of equations)
    x-3y=-280
    x-y= -80 (rearrange each equation in ax+by=c form)
    -(x-3y=-280)
    x-y= -80 (multiply eq 1 by -1)
    -x+3y= 280
    x-y = -80 (new set of equations)
    2y= 200 (Elimination method)
    y= 100 liters (35% solution)
    x+80= 100
    x= 20 liters(10% solution)

    The problem with mixture equations (for me) is that if you move that table around just a little bit, I'm lost again. I just tried to solve a mixture problem where the instead of x+80 (adding to a solution) it was x-80. I can calculate the equation but I still can't visualize the problem.

    I had this problem and i cant figure it out,
    How many liters of distilled water must be added to 80 ltrs. of 60% acid solution to obtain a 50% acid solution?
    how ...

    • @igals2343
      @igals2343 7 лет назад +1

      let x be the amount of distilled water that needs to be added.
      If there are 80 liters of an acid solution, and 60% is acid, then there's 48 liters of acid, and 32 liters of water.
      we know that 48/80=60%=0.6, because that's the part of the acid in the solution.
      So, now we add x water, we add nothing to the acid part, but we do add something to the total acid solution.
      So now: 48/(80+x)=0.5
