  • For a complete lesson on age word problems, go to www.MathHelp.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to solve "age" word problems, such as the following. Bret is 3 times as old as Laura. In 5 years, Bret will be twice as old as Laura. Find their ages now. Note that this problem requires a chart to organize the information. The rows of the chart can be labeled as Laura and Bret, and the columns of the chart can be labeled as "age now" and "age in 5 years". The chart is then used to set up the equation.

      Sir/Madam there is a shortcut
      ''3x+12=2x+23
      Instead solving that no longer you could have done
      3x-2x=23-12

    I've been trying to figure these types of questions out now for the past 8 month and I'm nowhere near to understanding what this is all about. No one thinks like this in real life. This did not explain nothing to me. I'm not getting the logic as to what he's writing. Who decides where to put what on each side of the equal sign. And he should have at least answered the complete equation step by step.

      @@oddyseyofminds FYI. I'm not in school. I'm learning this on my own time. Besides I haven't done math in over 40 years so it's safe to say that you lose and forget this stuff overt time If you don't keep putting it into practice. I majored in criminology not math.

      @failyourwaytothetop 3 года назад +1

      @@scorpiostwo I'll help you if you like. It is a logic that if followed by society there would no political, economic or social problems. The plain exercise of pure logic would solve all problems. There's a philosophy and psychology to this that he does not get into and it would be very helpful.
      If you can get a copy of Rene Descartes (16th c. mathematician), Rules for the Direction of the Mind, it would be helpful in realigning your thought process to adapt and incorporate "algebraic thought". The math and science folks of the Enlightenment went into great detail philosophizing about the impact and purpose of the sciences in a non-science language.
      For starters, Mary has an algebraic age. Yes, you are right no one thinks like this in the real world. It's why the world is in such a state of dysfunction per Descartes. Mary's "algebraic" age is independent of what her actual age is. Do you follow me? Her algebraic age is stated in two different time periods which he charts as AGE NOW and AGE in 12 YEARS. FULL STOP!!!
      Think on the significance of that statement and forget for a day or two the answer. The answer is irrelevant. It is the process, the method, the algebraic symbolism that is most important. The answer will always follow as a matter of fact, of following the rules of algebraic thinking not a fanatical or childish desire to get the right answer. Try to express everyday actions in your life in algebraic FORM! Part 2 coming up!

      Interpreting word problems into algebraic expressions can be difficult and it's recommended to practice several examples.
      For this particular problem, you're considering two different instances in time: the present and 12 years into the future. Setting up the chart as indicated in the video is useful to organize the information you're given.
      In the present, Mary's age is 3 times her son's age. This means that whatever age Mary's son is, she is 3 times that number. Let's let X represent her son's age and 3X as her age (in relation to her son).
      12 years into the future, the second scenario that the problem inquires, Mary and her son both have aged as well. This means that we must adjust our given information. The son's age is X+12, and his mother's age is 3X+12. IN THIS SCENARIO (12 years into the future), the problem informs us that, "Mary's age is 1 year less than twice her son's age." Again, we know that at this time, the son's age is X+12. We can COMBINE this information with what the question provides us to get the expression 3X+12=2(x+12)-1, as solve for X, the son's age. The son's age should come out to 11, and his mother's will be 3 times this amount, which is 33.

      @polickital6820 3 года назад

      @@WiShInGdRaGoN1324 The only part I don’t get and have been stuck on is, why do you multiply the 12 as well?
      So we know Mary is 3x and son is x, in 12 years you add + 12 to both, I get that. But if you are going to multiply by 2 because Mary will be 1 less than TWICE her sons age, why would 12 be included in the parenthesis? 3x+12=2(x+[[[12]]])-1
      I see no reason you would have to multiply 12
      Multiplying the x by 2 however, makes complete sense.

    @tamoniva12 here..
    1.) 3x+12=2(x+12)-1.....(you multiply what's in the parenthesis first and you get 2x+24)
    2.) 3x+12=2x+24-1 (here you bring the 2x to the left side of the equal sign. which makes it negative, and that makes 3x-2x=x. But then you also have to bring the 12 on the right side of the equal sign which makes 24 turn into 12 which leaves you with x=12-1)
    3.) x=12-1
    4.) x=11
