  • There was a good forecast for dry weather so I decided to get back to work on the barn foundation. Unfortunately the forecast was wrong and the wet weather caused me all sorts of problems. The holes I had done had all gone soft at the bottoms and the ones I was digging were caving in. It was a really stressful week for me trying to make sure I didn't just keep going backwards. I finally got back on track and saved the holes and finished on a high with the concrete work done. im glad its out the way now. its not a fun part of building.

Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan’s Shed Plans.

You could have mixed in lime (google translate from dutch word 'Kalk' its a white powder). It is also used in construction of roads on wet clayish ground. It dries the ground and 'transforms' the clay in to stone like chunks.

I learned this lesson myself in Illinois, USA. Ended up having to redo all the holes I had dug by hand. So instead of doing all the holes, then all the concrete... I did them one at a time. Dig, rock, mix and place concrete, and finish. I did 24 holes by doing 2-3 per day as I had time. It's slow but it beats doing them all twice which pissed me off to no end. Most mad at my own ignorance and stupidity on that one.

That "will to proceed" & to "push on through" are positive messages to all your followers.
"If you fail to plan --- you plan to fail" a wise person once said & you've been planning this project for a long time. It's been obvious to followers that -- aside from planning --- you also consider possible 'difficulties' & have been able to use 'plan B' as a way of keeping the project heading forward.

Maybe it is because you are building a timber frame. We had the same curse on our timber frame house. We hit standing water at 12 inches below the surface and our frost line is 48 here, it was a month in a muck hole. 25 piers formed and 15 minutes after the pump truck showed up we blew our forms to pieces. First time around we order $2k of expensive fill. Second it actually worked. We used big foot plastic forms at the base to distribute the load. It will be a breath of fresh air when you are out of the muck and into the wood. Hard labor for sure!

Exact same thing happened to me last year. Monolithic slab with grade beams for barn though, dug the foundation footers and trenches and then water socked in and made ground unstable then winter hit and set me back quite a ways getting it back to stable usable ground. I know the feeling of relief when concrete is finally poured and checked off the list. Can’t wait to see and hear more about this “temporary structure” above everything to work under. Might should have don’t that before digging footers. In all my grumbling I was saying “Need to build a barn around my barn to allow me to build my barn and keep the rain off” lol
    Happy building!

I operated a 200 ton end dump truck , we would fill large areas and when it would rain the bulldozer would push the mud off the edges then it would dry in a few months hard as a rock . In the States we would surcharge with garnet stones then fill 32 inches with stone in three or four lifts then a foot of gravel hard pack then a foot of Asphault in lifts for interstate highways the off ramps we would burry stumps borrow the fill for under the highway the good gravel and good fill every 100 feet would be preferred pipe to remove any water . The Cat Truck has 9 foot tall Michelin tires that compacts the material x 200 tons loaded ! Like your videos ! Thanks

I'm think a Feench drain ditch around the barn area might channel the water away so the barn and paddock stay dry. I know it means more work, but it might save you headaches down the line. Or at least, I sincerely hope so.

Don't beat yourself up too much, it was a good plan and it's going to be great in the end whatever.

LOL Yeah, learning by doing. Yeah! Self-sarcasm. Absolutely love that part. Somehow you always reach your goal at the end.
