Having played the P-105 many times I can say that it feels very professional for such a small lightweight piano, I prefer playing it over my son's Roland FP50. There is no way Yamaha is going to give a digital piano away with all the extra features of the DGX650 without skimping on something hidden (which is present on the P105) such as the superior keybed/action or velocity sample rate or whatever! If I could have the P-105 with an LCD screen and Gm soundbanks it would be for me the perfect single keyboard to take to a gig! The weight of the DGX concerns me....the light weight but big sound is what makes the P105 stand out in this market!
MrMuso1563 Nope. They are the same in terms of keybed and sound engine. The DGX also has far superior features that you could only usually get at a much higher price. Drawbacks? --Entry level GHS action (keybed) (I actually haven't tested it much myself, but it gets mixed reviews) --Weight --Size You COULD gig with it, but personally I think it fits best for a home pianist because of the weight. Though, with all the features I'd say they want people to gig with it as well. Just be wary of its weight. I will be thoroughly testing the GHS action for myself to see if it's for me. Fortunately, my dealer has the DGX650 in stock. IT SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED THAT A NEW YAMAHA P-105 SUCCESSOR HAS BEEN RELEASED. IT IS KNOWN AS THE P-115 AND WILL BE SHIPPING IN APRIL. It is not much of an improvement, just a little more polyphony, an extra sound or two, and an app to go with it. That's really all. All you need to play piano really is at least 64 polyphony. So 128 is more than enough.
br Not a problem. I actually ended up purchasing the DGX650 and could not be happier with it. I honestly really love the action, even though it's entry level. The ability to play MIDI files is a huge plus for me as well.
SyotosGod Same feel and same sound. The DGX is a little bit more expensive because of its extended features. I would say the feel is solid, and the sound is suitable. A digital piano will never be a real acoustic, at least for a very long time, so you couldn't ask for much more.
I bought the P-105 then returned it a couple of days later for a store credit (too basic and the NO Midi was a deal breaker for me) and ordered the DGX instead, I've also ordered a Roland Lucina AX-09 for light weight gigging.
Re. these reviews about keyboards in general, I've checked out many on youtube now and wondering if I am the only one who thinks most are weak......please don't just recap basic stats and specs that we could find 1000 other places on the net. That wastes our time. Focus on SHOWING us how it works and sounds and things we might not get from a spec sheet. You left out SO much. Finally, you didn't even compare the 2! Where's stuff like "the action is the same, but the 650 has so-and-so feature where the 105 doesn't" etc. And when you play, make it very brief, just enough for us to get the gist of what you're talking about. People who read these reviews are interested in the product, not your playing. And for crying out loud GIVE OPINIONS...the weighted action is/isn't good, it is/isn't better than comparably priced X model or brand etc. THAT'S the info we want. Check out "Piano Man Chuck" for an example of what I'm talking about.
A question I have is why get the P105 over the P650 since the price difference is so small. There must be something else the P105 has over the P650 since it has only 14 voices.
The answer in my opinion is simple. If You want a digital piano that is comparable with real pianos and You want some extra features (LCD, smart chords, great look, and some more modern voices) You should buy DGX. If you focus on playing just piano I think P-105 will be the best choice for You. I bought DGX650B and since 10 months I am a happy user :) I hope it will help ! Regards from Poland !
Michael Reif The price difference is $200. So basically, if you're wanting to buy a P-105, but are okay with spending a couple hundred dollars more, you get TONS of features. DEFINITELY worth the money. But of course the DGX 650 also takes up a bit more room (Not too much). It's basically a MUCH improved P-105 for just a couple hundred dollars extra. Which of course, most people don't want to spend. That's what makes thee P-105 so popular. It's small, affordable, and does what they want most; play piano. However, if you are wanting a lot of sounds, effects (INCLUDES A MASTER EQ and 35 REVERB EFFECTS), etc, then go for the DGX. With all that it gives you, $200 more is nothing. My opinion, get the DGX if you can. But remember that they have the same sound engine (piano sound) and action (keys). Good luck with your purchase !
Michael Reif The price diff is about 50% (about $250) on avg. "So small" is a curious way to put it. Wish I made enough to consider that much money a pittance. Anyway, the answer would be again you don't have money to piss away, and you don't really need all the bells and whistles. And let's face it, a lot of the extra voices (esp guitars and horns) sound cheap and fake anyway.
Daniel Dougan Ah, I have it now, but I appreciate the input I can agree with increased weight helping the overall playing experience. I'm fairly satisfied with it. I see myself with it for months, if not years down the line. The number of voices (with numerous voice parameter adjustments), decent action, and loud speakers make it a worthwhile purchase in my opinion.
i a beginner and i want to buy a keyboard but im totaly confusing now because i watched many keyboard from the different company but i like korg pa600, even i like yamaha DGX-650 too, but i dont know which one is the best, help me please, thank you
Re- the USB instead of Midi. As far as I know you cannot simply play another instrument or synth sound module via usb using the P-105 as a controller like you could with midi. I'd be absolutely wrapped if I could simply play sound banks from a usb stick (the technology is surely there) but I've been told I can't. I have now actually bought the P-105 but preferred the DGX650 for it's extra sounds and screen etc but it is so physically large and heavy that it's ridiculous. If the DGX650 was around 15-16 kg and physically smaller I would have bought it in a flash!
OK so I bet the P-105 has something that the DGX650 doesn't.....perhaps superior action/keybed and better piano samples. I want a P-105 and just love the action and piano sound...........but hate the lack of an LCD screen and the lack of general midi soundbanks.....14 sounds really sucks. So why would someone buy the P105 over the DGX650 unless it was just to save weight? Surely the p105 has something the DGX650 doesn't! I'll have to play them both side by side myself!
I guess what makes the P-105 so special is it's light weight 11.7 kg is amazing considering how good the action and sound is. I'm picking one up in a couple of days to use as a gigging keyboard. I can't believe that Yamaha omitted midi in and out on this instrument.......talk about shooting themselves in the feet........unbelieveable!

Steven Toth Thanks, this is the kind of info many of us are looking for. Clearly the advantage of the 650 is superior features vs performance.

Do these integrate with USB to Pro Tools 11?

Jacek Więski Hey, how does the action feel? Is it too light? Is it mushy? Unrealistic?
Thanks !

Mus RnB They both have the same action (keys) and sound.
Yamaha is avery good keyboard for practicing and for home but yamaha dgx 650 is perfect for evrything even for stage

The first song he played on the p105 sounds so much like dire dire docks from mario lol
Video is good but you did'nt tell which one is better ????
THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION

No, DGX650 doesnt miss anythink what P105 offers. The piano sound (Grand piano) and key actions are equal.

MrMuso1563 is there a problem with using usb instead?
Sadly neither of the two keyboards appears to have midi input/output. :(
Jessica French they have usb , work as midi with pc :)
+Jessica French Mostly only high end or older keyboards have actual mid ports. USB I/O have taken over this end of the market.
