As a huge New Order fan, just had to chime in on the not-disco rant. Released in 1983 this track is post Disco, and New Order is considered one of the forebears of the post punk era. Fun fact: Blue Monday is the biggest selling 12" single of all time. 👍

Technically not 70's disco, but is is definitely 80's dance synth new wave. My sister was super into this music, going to new wave clubs and dancing. She introduced me to this type of music, and it was one of my guilty pleasures that I would enjoy when my Hard Rock Heavy Metal friends were not around. Good times.

The clubs used to play this so loud with the bass going through your body to the core. It was an amazing time. Lights flashing in sync with the music, club mixes of this extended the end of the song beginning at 7:15, the whole crowd moving… really miss this era. I have never been to a rave, but we used to call it Friday or Saturday, sometimes Thursday!

I saw New Order live back in the 80’s ...they were on tour with Sugarcubes and Public Image Limited. That was a hell of a show ! Bjork , Johnny Rotten and then New Order. When they played Blue Monday , the entire arena was moving up and down a good 6 inches from everyone bouncing up and down.

I remember the first time I heard New Order. It was around '85. I said something to the effect that they didn't sound original in any way, that they sounded like everyone else. The guy I was with rolled his eyes and said "You've got it backwards. Everyone else sounds like New Order".

You should also dig into their older stuff when the band was Joy Division, Love Will Tear Us Apart. Their bass player, Peter Hook, still performs alot of the Joy Division/New Order songs with his band Peter Hook and The Light.

'Either you're a dancer or you're not'... I think the iconic status of this track comes from its equal appeal to the crowd who didn't go anywhere near the clubs. A pounding synth track from a band that emerged from the ashes of a morose, grumbling indie band. Post-disco, early European techno and a forest of Rolands would later inspire Chicago house and Detroit techno; when analogue synth tech got into the hands of British bedsitter creatives, we got New Order, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Yazoo, The Human League, OMD and more. And the early '80s was bleeping fantastic!

Fun fact. Even though this is considered post disco, and the beginnings of the synth pop new wave era, disco didnt get a chance to "die out" organically, but was literally murdered in one single night. Some djs and a televised Chicago ball game held a disco record demolition on the field and hysteria broke out. It was called the night disco died. Radio DJs HATED disco, and called for its demise. Which is sad, because it placed such a stigma on the music and some really amazing musicians and songwriters. Nile Rogers and Chics career was over in one night.

This has a disco structure, but it came a little after the disco era: 1983. (In the US, the disco era was said to extend from 1974 to 1979, but it extended later in Europe, and this was a UK band so...) People who don't know song structures will say "It's alternative!" or "It's new wave!" or "It's synthpop/technopop!," which are the things they called this song and band at the time, but that's only because the word disco had gone firmly out of style by 1983 and people didn't want to call it that. It definitely has that classic, "four-on-the-floor" seventies disco structure. The band said, in fact, that they were inspired to produce the song from listening to Sylvester's 1978 indisputably disco hit "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)." Can't get much more disco than that.

Definitely post-disco, but heavily influenced, by the band’s admission. The opening drums were damn near lifted (not sampled) from Donna Summer’s Our Love, the rolling part of the intro (and later) from Sylvester’a You Make me Feel, the twang Bass guitar was from a Clint Eastwood movie. Mix in Kraftwerk and the title from Fats Domino. Interestingly the original concept was more acoustic while the instruments were more of an experiment.

This is New Wave and 80s. Most were members of the band Joy Division. The lead singer of Joy Division, Ian Curtis, committed suicide. The remaining members with I beleive another new member formed New Order.
Joy Division is the first band or one of the first bands of the post-punk movement and very influential. They only had two albums. Their music is different than New Order and sometimes heavy. I haven't seen many reactions to them and when I do it is to the video "Love Will Tear Us Apart", which the sound quality isn't that great IMO. I do recommend: Disorder, Transmission, She's Lost Control again and Love Will Tear Us Apart.
This is one of my favorite dance songs, but it is the only thing I know of New Order.

Blue Monday is the biggest selling 12" single of all time. Plus, the sales of this single put the record company out of business. If you see the original sleeve, it was a floppy disk with cut outs and color. Cost the record more to produce and sleeve the single then they were selling it for. So, the fact it became so popular and unexpected cost them a ton of money! Check out the movie 24 Hour Party People it tells part of the story of Factory records. Great music throughout the movie as well! Cheers!

Disco was a bit different, however the roots of this was definitely sown in the 70s with Giorgio Moroder and songs like Donna Summer’s I Feel Love, or Chase from Midnight Express, or even Popcorn back in the late 60s.
It’s easy to look down on some of this music due to the rigidity and repetitive nature of ‘some’ of it (definitely not all, as some was highly creative), but let’s not forget that synths we’re core parts of some of the funkiest stuff you’ll ever hear (Stevie Wonder’s Moog basslines in Superstition and Higher Ground are fantastic examples), and although House music was super MIDI laden and lifeless, you still had some great adaptations like Herbie Hancock’s Rockit and other similar songs. Also, sometimes it’s easy to assume that all this music was electronic, but a good listen to Cars by Gary Numsn reveals just how much funk and groove was being delivered by the drummer and bass player in addition to the guitar and the synth leads and synth bass sounds. It was best of both worlds stuff.

This is not extended. It was only ever released as a 12" single.

it's OK, but sounds like the beginning of the end for people who learn instruments and such. You see where we are today. These guys had an excuse sort of, because sequencers were new then, and it was exploratory. Now this is everything....ugh.
