I was lucky enough to see Winters perform this routine in person in a little club (without a stage) in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains circa 1956, while on vacation with my parents. Jonathan was just beginning to win national exposure through his own 15-minute show on NBC-TV. My father had never heard of him, but agreed to take us there after I showed him a newspaper ad announcing Jonathan's gig at the little club. As we came in, we walked by the bar just as Winters was getting up with a drink in his hand. He smiled at us and said, "Watch out for the "juice". There was one part of this baseball routine that he did that evening that you don't see in this TV appearance. Imitating a pitcher who was trying to loosen up his neck by moving his head every which way, he "accidentally" sniffed one of his armpits. His reaction to what he sensed got one of the biggest laughs of his performance. By the way, all of us, including my father, liked the whole show.
You were lucky!!!! I watched him on TV every chance I had growing up - television was only black and white back then but it didn't matter the shows were great!
That's a great experience you had- I can picture Winters' expressions after the "arm pit scene"! They don't make comedians like Johnathan any more, and at 70 years old, I've seen my fair share on T.V.
This guy exudes class. Reminds me so much of my dad, in that they were about the same age, and my dad loved Jonathan. What it must have been like to invite Jonathan to a Thanksgiving meal, and just let him tell stories and be himself!
The voice intro at the beginning sounds like Johnny Carson, so it could have been from one of his shows. Winters was the king of improv, and Robin Williams--RIP--took it to the next level.
I checked all the lists and its true... Jonathan Winters is the # 1 funny man in the world...He was the first comedy Genius and all others have to follow him if they can...
I soooooooooooo agree. ... and so does Bill Cosby and many other great comedians and stand-up comics: he was the best. THE VERY BEST when he was really on his game. WHAT AN AMAZING HIGH WIRE ACT HE WAS !
Jonathan often appeared as a guest on Andy's show- and during one season in the mid-'60s, had his own monthly series of specials alternating with Andy.
Robin Williams called Jonathan Winters the funniest man alive, and I can see why ... he is hilarious!! There was a similar comedy skit involving a pitcher; I think it was from the 1950's ... recently saw it on an old variety show, and it was in black and white. It was a chubby baseball pitcher on the mound wearing uniform number 000, and he bumbles everything. He lets balls fly past him, one plunks down right beside him, another goes between his legs and past him, and then he does this whole very slow motion pitch. It was so funny, and I want to say it looked like Lou Costello, but I'm not sure. If anyone is familiar with what I am talking about, please help me out here? Thanks.

At 1:18 Jonathan makes a sound as he drinks from the flask. How does he make that sound? Does anyone know how he does it? I've been trying to figure out for years.
Narrator is, obviously, Johnny Carson so... Maybe early Johnny Carson Tonight Show or Jack Parr toward the end of his tenure. 'Living colour' was NBC's brainchild from their programming dept. so? Maybe it was first season of Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. Answer to another question, in comment section, by AnEnormousBBFan: Yet another noise that can be made with tongue moving in such a manner very rapidly against the roof of the mouth. The contour of mouth & rest of face affects the actual sound eminated while amplifying.

Not sure this isn't from the Jonathan inters Show.. It didn't last all that long as he adlibbed almost everything but the other guest stars had lines they could use.. But JW cracked them up so much that much of the show was shot trying to keep the camera off the break-ups.. It was prolly a real hoot in the studio but at home well.. not so much.. I recall seeing a few of them but it was kinda late for a young lad that I was at the time...
Interesting how the comedy styles of the 50s and 60s just don't work any more. Some of the Don Knotts and Dick Van Dyke sketches were ROTFL funny. Don Knotts and others were mainly famous for silly faces instead of punch lines. And the whole idea of pantomime as a form of comedy used to work also. Plus, comedy had to be safe, so the topics were vanilla: pantomime a pitcher on the mound, a person buying a car, etc.

This is an amazing story. Thank you for sharing.
I'm a young adult with an old soul and I must say I envy you old timers for experiencing a matured, classy, clean, original and magical era!!!
That's a great experience you had- I can picture Winters' expressions after the "arm pit scene"!
They don't make comedians like Johnathan any more, and at 70 years old, I've seen my fair share on T.V.

Iconic true comic genius 😅
That was definitely Carson's voice introducing him. I would say with 90% surety that this comes from the Tonight Show.
We really loved JW back in those years sixties and seventies at my grandmother's house where I grew up
I've been a Yankees fan for more than 35 yrs. Thanks for making me laugh.
There never was anyone as funny as Jonathan Winters, in my opinion, and never will be.
Jonathan Winters comedy gave us the summers.
Amazing how pro he was at mouth effects.
JW and Don Knotts hung together back in the day. Wish I had been privy to their conversation!
My favorite comic of all time.
His baseball skit is my very favorite. He is just too much.
I soooooooooooo agree. ... and so does Bill Cosby and many other great comedians and stand-up comics: he was the best. THE VERY BEST when he was really on his game. WHAT AN AMAZING HIGH WIRE ACT HE WAS !

No, this is footage from a special and Carson was narrating. The origin of the footage is what they're looking for.
Jonathan lived up to his name, John with a Ton of creative jokes.

Great! Thanks old dude
he was immaculate and not overweight by this day's standards..
Genius.
This from the Carson Show you can Hear Johnny at the very beginning.

Just reading your description made me chuckle. And who knows? This very comedy skit may all of a sudden pop up on TV Land or the Hallmark Channel...
The High Priest of Comedy. If you don't laugh your ass off with this bit, you must have no pulse.
Genius
👨💻🎙JW - funny story telling 🤪 👍
Someone was asking where this segment came from
My guess would be The Tonight Show
Just the best there was!
Wow ! .only him ! ..LOL !
Wearing a Mets cap and All Star in the mid 60s was itself a joke.
Cannot be sure but I definetly know the voice in the starting was of Jhonny Carson. So I am going to say it is "The Tonight Show" with Jhonny Carson.
Definitely, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson!
Update: IMDB says it was on for about 3 years or so... Not long enough... but still...
Winters was an improv genius!

This must be from the Johnny Carson show. Johnny loved Jonathan
He was so Mr Bean esque at times, every time I watch him I realize another comedian he must have influenced.
So Funny,,a classic

tongue against roof of mouth
'NBC's Big Event' series.
It sounds like it is maybe from a "Tonight Show" anniversary, hence the Cason voice over.

The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson
Obviously Johnny Carson's voice.
Wrong. Pay attention. Johnny only introduced the CLIP. It wasn't a live spot.
Winters...true improv genius.

I mistook him for Jobe Chamberlain..
What a face!
I beg to differ. Mister Chaplain is the first comedy Genius.
i'd say Johnny Carson
