Yes, I only flew out of LAX heading East once. The overwhelming majority vector traffic out over the ocean to clear inbound descent into the LA basin into LAX which can be an awesome approach in viewing the massive sprawl of Los Angeles metro if you're lucky enough to have a very clear day. Going out over the ocean gives you the perspective of seeing our second largest city right on the coast. Consider the view a treat of flying out of LA before you turn east to other cities unless it's Asia.

@Bellhorn25 Like bluecolors83 said, at LAX, most flights take off towards the ocean. At every ariport, it doesn't mater what destination your heading towards-the plane will always take off into the wind. Here in LA, the ocean is an excellent wind source. Only when it rains will planes take off in the opposite direction.

LAX is practically right on the beach, and the runways run east to west. The pilot has no choice in which direction to take off, has to go the way the tower tells them to. Taking off to the west means going over the beach, circling around to avoid crossing the inbound LAX air traffic on the east side, then turn toward true destination. An oversimplification, but that's why. Hope it helps. Cheers.

It depends on the Runway that the air traffic controller tells u to go to. and That is determined by wind speed and direction.

@shahrzad70 Pretty much it! Because of KLAXs proximity to the ocean, the winds are almost always coming out of the west and therefore that's the direction aircraft take off. It's designed like that mostly for landing. Upon landing you don't want a tailwind for you're in for a some trouble!

I'm flying into lax next Saturday. How far away is it from the ocean?

@kambridge967 Because the winds from the ocean. Usually out of the west. Pretty uncommon to have KLAX depart west.

@soldier2330 i know what you mean. I remember my first airplane flight. It was from LAX and it was going to Dallas Ft. Worth, TX and we flew over the ocean for awhile. I was like wtf? lol. I wasn't any geography major but I knew Texas wasn't in that direction lol. We were over the ocean for some time before the pilot turned around and headed back over land. I didn't know the layout of LAX (relative to the ocean and the direction to take during takeoff).

Whenever I go back to PHX from LAX on SWA, we take off over the ocean and then turn around to the desert. Ugh....makes me so sad.

@Bellhorn25 I will expand on "bluecolors83" by saying that all flights take off and land into the wind to minimize the amount of runway used. In the case of LAX, the wind is blowing on shore 99% of the time-hence, you will usually take off and land towards the Pacific.

There r things in aviation called "Departures" and "Arrivals". They r charts theat pilots fly. Basically waypoints in the sky. U cant Fly direct to the destination. Secondly, y would u wanna takeoff Eastbound? U cant just Pick runways to land and takeoff. Depends on wind direction and windspeed. And for the record, its not a "Stupid" plane
