  • California is looking for alternatives to the state's gas tax and is offering to pay people hundreds of dollars to be a part of the 2024 Road Charge Collection Pilot program. Caltrans is leading the research as they look for ways to keep collecting money that will be used for infrastructure and road maintenance. Currently, the revenue collection is based on a per-gallon fee, but the road tax would change that to a per-mile fee.

Tax my income to provide services. Don't tax me again to use those services.

If one can afford a Tesla or any overpriced EVs, they are likely working in jobs that don't require travel as much, even have the luxury of working from home/remote work. It's those who are lower income and/or students etc that drive more between jobs and schools, so you end up taxing the poor more anyway. What a brilliant idea they've thought of.

It won’t “replace” the gas tax. It’ll be an additional tax.
