  • @RegalPixelKing
    @RegalPixelKing 2 года назад +43

    I remember hearing something interesting; part of the reason for why the Wii U was so weak compared the the PS4 and Xbox One was because Nintendo stupidly thought of "HD" as a binary thing, as in Nintendo made an HD compatible console, now they are on par with the 8th generation. Obviously hardware does not work like that, but that was Nintendo's mindset.

    • @DeToxCommunity
      @DeToxCommunity 2 года назад +26

      There's a 0% chance anybody capable of hardware engineering would think this way. The answer is almost certainly that nintendo always sells their hardware at a profit and the cost of the gamepad necessitated relatively weak hardware to hit a price point that they thought consumers would stomach (plus they wanted Wii backwards compatibility which locked them into a specific architecture and would have also driven up costs).

    • @RegalPixelKing
      @RegalPixelKing 2 года назад +10

      @@DeToxCommunity I know it's a backward beyond stupid way of thinking, but I'd say it was equally stupid to not see HD being right around the corner with the Wii, or sticking with the same processor that they used since the GameCube, or thinking that big AAA games would flock to the Wii U, or thinking that next gen games could even run on the Wii U with its lack of power. Nintendo is blindingly stupid sometimes.

    • @kasjamm
      @kasjamm 2 года назад

      Nintendo was delusional back then. They went out their way to make it as weak as absolutely possible.

    • @bojangles6444
      @bojangles6444 2 года назад

      @@RegalPixelKing well other companies sell at a loss make it up with games. Nintendo doesn’t make that assumption- they didn’t buy Wii games. It was good, but it was in the closet within 2 years. Switch is portable, and it’s still 2 generations behind even after updated more expensive console. You think they have hardware engineers? Not really… well they make plastic covers… switch doesn’t need to be fast- it’s portable. It’s faster than the Vita- job done.

    • @StormsparkPegasus
      @StormsparkPegasus 2 года назад +6

      Actually no. They had to use a MUCH cheaper and older CPU to save money, so that the gamepad could be included. The CPU they used has 2004 levels of performance. The GPU is better than the PS3 or 360, but the cheap CPU holds it back.

    I really like the Wii U - It got me back into gaming. I had taken a break from gaming around 2004 - I moved in with my girlfriend, job was exceptionally busy, eventually we married and then had a daughter in 2010. Around 2012 I started to think about gaming again. I was primarily a PC gamer prior but wanted something the whole family could enjoy. I bought a Wii U and it was SO MUCH FUN! Even though my daughter was young at the time she grew in to it and my wife (who was not a gamer) really got into many of the games. As my daughter got older we spent the summers (Im a teacher) going through games like Paper Mario Color Splash and New Super Mario Bros U together. Then the family Mario Cart tournaments, so much fun! It was also my daughters first introduction to Zelda with Twilight Princess.
    I will never, ever get rid of my Wii U, so many memories now tied up into it.

    The Wii and Switch are underpowered yet they sold well. So this proves power doesn't matter. It's the marketing that affects sales.

    I picked up a refurbished one on ebay with a bundle of games.
    I decided to give it a second go after looking into improvement mods. HD wii games, gamecube emulation and wii u titles backed up for quick access and no need for the disc drive make this a surprisingly awesome gaming machine.
    ... not to mention all the eshop titles I had bought years ago.

    I own and have beaten a lot of these. Loved orochi warriors hyper on wii u. It plays fine. Ninja garden razors edge was sooo hard. Zombi U I loved. Hard disagree with Rich on that one. This is one of the exceptions where the gamepad was done right and it adds to the horror experience.

    As a long time sub, I am disappointed that Rich decided to stop pronouncing Oobiesoft and Merryo correctly.
    Other than that, nice job finally releasing this! A shame the Wii U isn't worth getting anymore, since all the good games were ported to Switch by now.

    I bought a Wii U after it was discontinued, just for Breath of the Wild when it came out. I use it primarily for playing DS games on the TV nowadays, though until Nintendo gives us Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD on the Switch, I won't be packing the Wii U away for good.

    Hey Rich that was such a refreshing memory lane. I´ve remember way back in the day following your videos about next gen rumours at the time. Something that always didn´t get about the WiiU is that many ports run worse than in ps3/360 for not reason, some sites even claming that it was less powerful than the ps3. I do remember watching video comparasions for blops2 and it def looked a bit uglier in some parts. Cheers!

    I remember I harassed my parents about wanting a Wii U and I got one for Christmas in 2013. It's still my most favorite home console. Probably because of nostalgia lol I also remember I took a selfie on my TV using the Wii U Chat app and my iPod at the time (I was a cringy 13 year old with too much free time. Idk how I managed to do that). I have so many good memories of this thing so it's really nice to see this video.

    I still have my launch model Nintendo Wii U. It's the black model with 32GB flash storage and came with Nintendo Land. One thing about the Wii U was that you also need a USB splitter cable if you were to use an external hard drive. One game that was designed solely for the Wii U gamepad was Star Fox Zero. That game had awkward gyro controls. I personally think that game could have been better if it used traditional controls instead of relying on the gamepad. Even Wind Waker HD used the gamepad but you can use the Wii U pro controller also.

    The Virtual Boy wasn't a handheld either though. It wasn't mobile.
    It may not have been a home console you can hook to a TV, but it was a stationary home device you couldn't do much with.
    And yeah it was a big failure. But there's some pretty awesome games i wish would get modern ports from that device.
