  • Circa 1937, the inter-island Cattle/Freight steamer S.S. Humuula is shown making it's rounds, The ship stops off Kawaihae and the photographer goes ashore to film the paniolo , probably from Parker Ranch, as they load up sheep and then cattle for shipment to O'ahu.

My Uncle "Abel Seabury" worked aboard this ship back when Parker Ranch still loaded cattle "Ho `Au Pipi" (Swim The Cattle) style aboard the SS Humuula. Kawaihae is where thet used to Ho `Au Pipi. My Grandpa "Dr. Leonard Newton Case" was still the Territorial Vet back then...

My great-grandfather, William Punahoa, was Captain of the Humuula at some point but I have no pictures or anything of it. This footage was amazing to see. Mahalo.

Wow! How many cowboys around the world could do THIS kind of wrangling? It must’ve taken a couple of days to get that ship fully loaded like it was, too. Talk about hard work!
Amazing footage, thank you for sharing!

Yesterday I read a diary entry by my mother from 11/29/1937 describing riding this ship. My wife googled and found this clip. In the final frames there is a dark haired woman in a lai that could be her!

Great historic footage! After the 5:46 in the video is when they start working with the cattle. It would have been nice with slack key music, but that's ok.

I remember seeing this vessel tied up in Honolulu Harbor back in the 1950s.
