Morning Report 20 Jun 24: US sharemarkets were closed on Wednesday

- Continental European sharemarkets ended lower on Wednesday, pressured by losses in real estate and technology stocks, which fell 1.2% and 1.1%, respectively. Basic resources stocks added 0.6%, tracking a rebound in metal prices and leading sectoral gains. UK stocks were buoyed by a 0.8% lift in metal miners as investors digested inflation data. Annual headline British consumer prices fell to the Bank of England’s target of 2% in May, its lowest since July 2021, from 2.3% in April (survey: 2%). Data also showed core inflation eased to 3.5% in May from 3.9% in April (survey: 3.5%). The continent-wide FTSEurofirst 300 index dipped 0.2%. In London, the UK FTSE 100 index gained 0.2%.
