Apart from being a great singer, Grace writes and composes her own music. She wrote stray to emphasize her struggle between her private life and the music industry.
New subscriber....glad you are finding out who Grace is. She is truly outstanding recorded....and ever greater live. This video is the first time she performed STRAY for an audience. It released the very next day. She feeds off the audience.
I agree with all you said. I'd add there are so many unbelievably talented musicians out there that, sadly, will never be known, simply because the magic of a good hook popping into their head never happens. Yet, a mere child... And then she has all the natural instincts to tease the hook, and song climax, and deliver (hopefully with that beautiful rasp). This song: the more complicated dynamics (impressive) do make it slower to hook. But it hooks. ...A mere child.
I like your breakdown of Grace's music. Your background helps you give a professional aspect on her music and lyrics. Great Job. I subscribe for Grace.
You're the first reviewer I've ever noticed describe what I have always called Channeling the Spirit through a song. This song is her reaction to the efforts by the "suits" to commercialize her, that you picked up on in "Ur so Beautiful"
New subscriber now great grace vanderwaal reaction several people have asked for it I will ask too lol do grace singing darkness keeps chasing me live rooftop MTV video she was 14 there wrote the song when she was 13 it's an amazing deep beautiful song
I'm so glad you picked this version to listen to. Go back and watch the very end of her song. It's like she has been in a trance, comes out of it and remembers where she is. It's subtle but you can clearly see it. Even at 12 years old she was special. This is one of her early and best covers from her RUclips channel: ruclips.net/video/7SbLtb3vv2s/видео.html
SaWD, Here's a full on banquet if you want to see her live. A historic first for her in a couple ways. It was the very first time she did a show where she wasn't just part of something else doing maybe one or two songs. It was her show and the first one of her concert tour back in 2017 to promote her new album "Just the Beginning"... Which brings up another first.... It was the first time she got to perform live and introduce a bunch of new songs she'd written for the album. OH! And her first gig with her own full on back-up band too. You can tell it's a little rough around the edges in several places but in spite of that what blows my mind is how she comes across like she's been doing it for at least a decade! It's almost surreal.. A 13 (14?) year old kid doing an entire set of all her own original music??? And I'm not hearing any "filler" songs in there either. One of the highlights for me is when she hits those high notes on "Better Life" (starts at 19:00) and you can hear the shockwaves rippling through the crowd.... Enjoy.... During those times they discovered Grace's special ability and encourage it. I believe Grace discovered through them that the emotion she puts into her singing brought the best reactions from her family so she learned very young to keep singing that way.
Going back to your first reaction; by now you know how good she is. You really should just watch her first appearance on AGT. I mean, she will be singing I Don't Know my Name for the next 50 years. It is, to Grace, like Over the Rainbow is to Judy Garland.

A bit of a downer: I'm fine with reactor's comments during the song, but you need to keep them tight.
