- In today's vlog, I wanted to provide you with a quick rundown on my micro compost business where I make a few extra dollars on the side.
In these current times, we can all do with a few extra dollars, right?
I sell these bags from my home and over time it has become more popular with the locals. (word of mouth)
I very rarely do deliveries, so 95% of my customer base comes to me. Pretty cool, yes?
If you would like to see more vlogs about my micro-business please let me know in the comments box down below and I will do my best to create them for you.

The Steve Irwin of gardening! Sorry I just had to say it haha, love it, thanks Marty!
No worries, it's an honour😀
Your accent makes learning all of this so much better it’s like my own wildlife teacher 😭
Really "WOW" that's cool, stoked you enjoy it!😎
Love your channel. I love making compost we have 7 chickens that love to sift our compost! Your enthusiasm is contagious and keep up the good work! Sending love from California!
Hi Redwood Ninja. Thanks for the kind words. Lots of love to you and the family too!😀
Marty, I live in New Hampshire US & I love your vids . Our weather is so polar but I still learn so much .I also have a few worm projects going on ,small farms & worm towers in the garden', Plus worms in the normal compost bin keep the vids coming please .
Hi Eric, will do my best to keep them rolling out. I have some interesting topics on the way😀Thanks for watching
Another New Hampshire resident here. Where about are you located?
Would love to see more videos about your micro compost business Marty... very interesting how you’re doing it on a small scale and still be able to make some income...
Hi Nicoletta, I will do my best to roll them out in the up coming vlogs. I feel it's important, to help others make a few dollars in these time ahead. So much room for everyone to do this all over the world.😀
@@martysgarden I completely agree! Thanks for all you do - really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. It makes it so much easier for others to get started with confidence :)
Good stuff! Got a few worm bins going. Excited to see how the garden reacts to the castings
They will love it, just takes a little longer at first. But the BOOM! No looking back😀
Yes, I agree with Marty. It takes a little longer, then BOOM. I've been more focused with composting and worm farming for about 3 years now, and this Summer I had the BOOM! The soil just gave a real boost to perennials that I'd been nurturing for 5 years and the annuals powered. Keep going with your worm bins, I am. Learning as we go, and a big thanks to Marty
Definetly would like to see more videos on your micro compost business.im working on a soiless potting mix/compost blend business.
Hi Kyle, there is more on the way my friend..subscribe so you don't miss any of this series as it's going to be pretty good!😀
Thanks for the video, looking at starting my own compost biz!
Glad it was helpful, it can be very profitable in time. I have just started selling bags again
Hey Marty,
Yep, pretty cool! I'm living in Osaka, so pretty much apartment bound, no green grass and gardens just a little balcony for the washing. I'd love to start doing this and I'll find a way, potentially rent a plot down the line. If it is a possibility I would like to see the process in action!
Cheers
Hi Molly, I am currently filming using an aeroponics system at the moment and believe this is the future for urban farming/gardening because it involves a lot less water and space. If you are interested keep an eye on my channel as I will be showing the process, as it will possibly become a part of my new business model. 😎
I’m really enjoying your videos 😊Thankyou so much✌🏻❤️
Glad you like them!😀
So helpful!
Your doing a great job mate!
Thanks Sean, hopefully I can teach many on how to set up a small micro business using mine as a model. 😀
It's great when we can produce our own compost/castings. We know exactly what we are getting and it doesn't take much effort to make .
For sure, I hope you enjoy the up and coming series on small business and micro farming. It's going to be eye-opening for many I believe. 😀
Beautiful compost !!
Yes, very much so Dee! 😀
Marty that was the bomb.very enjoyable.🥰👍
You are welcome my friend,,there is more on the way that many will benefit from as I am currently writing a whole series on small business micro farming. 😀
good share dear thank you so much
Thanks for watching Amy😀
I'm glad to hear that you are making that money.
Thanks AJ,,will have to get you on the show in the near future,,in my interviews if you are interested?😀
Thanks Marty good video
Glad you enjoyed it Kane
Good stuff!
Thanks Kristen, hopefully I can help others learn to make a small sideline income and make a difference. 😀
Yea Marty,. I do some stuff where I make a great profit unless I add the value of my time too. You probably earn less than flipping burgers same as me.
I'm sure for you it's not so much about dollars as it is learning, improving your garden, and recycling and value-adding to what might otherwise end up as landfill.
Your product helps your local community grow better plants too.
Good onya 👍
Hi Gerry, it's definitely a game of love. There are so many things worth so much more than money. However, I did'nt mention the skills I am learning each day producing this content. Which is very valuable and will serve me for life. The locals love the compost and it helps pay the bills. I can't wait to take this overseas, as I will be able to scale up there with extra help and really make a big impact. Thanks for the continued support Gerry I really appreciate it.😀
Awesome stuff, dude. Doing the same in Canada.
Very cool the world needs better soils! Wishing you all the best with your venture
Very interesting video 👍
Glad you think so. You will like todays video then..I interview a very successful micro farmer😀
Thanks Marty you are an inspiration. I’m moving soon. The new place has bare red clay soil(the kind that stains everything)
I am thinking of getting truckloads of woodchip in to just cover all the exposed soil with it quite thickly. I’d add coffee grounds and let it sit there for a year. I reckon I can implement your system of open bottomed worm farms where I’d add my kitchen scraps and maybe scraps from the local cafe/shops too.
After the first year I’m hoping to scratch up a couple of veggie beds by just moving aside some of the decaying woodchip to plant into - might need to add some compost, we’ll just see.
Eventually I hope to have enough money put aside to make some raised garden beds- we are not getting any younger😊
Anyway I’d appreciate any advice on this plan/dream.
That all sounds like a good plan to me. It will work, just takes a bit of time
You could pile the woodchips in 6ft x6ft piles and layer it with grass clippings, kitchen scraps, and any plant matter and you could also scrape up the top layer of clay and layer that in the piles too, after a month or two it'll be nutrient dense almost completely processed top soil, you can leave it for 6 months or even a year then you'd have high quality compost fertilizer, you want to make sure get a good ratio of scraps/plant matter to wood chips and u don't want too big of piles of just straight chips cuz it could catch on fire from the internal heat
In the morning i'm wacthing this vidoe make me happy and feel relex
Wonderful, really nice to hear that
@@martysgarden thanks
Hey Marty always good. Another 40 mm rain overnight humidity 81% at the moment Cheers.
Wow, been pouring here too my friend😀
Love your accent 😍
Kobashi composting is all I can do where I live. Unfortunately, I reside in a two bedroom condo with my family. I'm sure the neighbors and management would loose it if I pilled compost on the side of the house
I am sure they would, I am just blessed,,it has no smells as it's just carbon and coffee grounds😀
Thanks 😀
welcome😎
Hi Marty, have you ever tried adding spent grains from a brewery or home brewer? Would like to know your thoughts on this - I put some in my worm farm last weekend and so far my worms seem to love it.
Hi Matt, it's great stuff for sure and if I had a different space I would look at using it. As I farm right in the street I have to keep as much smell and certain elements to a minimum. Let me know how the smell goes will you please as I think it's another valuable waste that could be used on a larger scale. 😀
@@martysgarden yep not going to lie - there is a slight pungent smell. I was worried at first when I opened it up to check it out but the worms were in there having a great time. I've actually never seen so many of them on the top tray - I've got the tumbleweed can-o-worms. On a large scale the smell would probably not be good - but a good resource that would otherwise be discarded and end up in landfill.
@@mattfenton6961 thanks Matt for the feedback. I would say the bacteria in that material would be on overdrive. It would make a great worm castings and very nutritious. It has all the elements that's for sure.
that compost looked so dense & nutrient rich
It's very rich yes, grows plants like crazy! Just getting back into production soon hopefully
love it
Thanks Lez😀
Hey Marty have you thought about building an aerated static pile? It would eliminate a lot of the turning. I'm curious about your worm bins. From the vid it sounds like there's no bottom and the worms come and go as they please. Is this correct?
Hi Eric, I have thought about that,,and will look at a static systems when I have more space. The big worms farms have no bottoms and this allows the worms to roam freely. Keep in mind I have hundreds of thousands of worms through the system. So I can do this. The large farms are designed to hold stocks so I don't lose worms every time I sell my compost. It's been working really well so far for me. I am working on this system as an offgrid design that can be applied in developing nations to create income. If all goes well it will be taught overseas in the next year or two.
Thanks for watching
Marty😀
@@martysgarden WOW! That’s great Marty! With you behind the wheel it’s going to work for sure! You keep posting and we’ll keep learning.
did you ever do a video about using the trommel i can see in the background(2:19)?
did you make it?
thanks
update: sorry I see you explained it later in the video !
It's okay you can see it being used in some of my vlogs. Check out this playlist about it all. I am sure you will dig this ruclips.net/video/Is81Wev3UW0/видео.html
Cheers
Marty 😀
I haven’t seen you feeding the worms farm what do you feed them? do you use eggshells for grits? Thanks
The large windrows get fed coffee grounds and the other farms a range of scraps and materials. I do have other videos on my channel were I talk more on food...One of the live shows recently we discussed worm super foods,,,check it out ruclips.net/video/v2f7q9WATMs/видео.html
Have an awesome day
Marty 😀
I started a small compost pile during midsummer (coastal SC) and the pile is loaded with grub worms. Is this good, bad or normal. I'm building a cage now. That is if I can get my car ready to paint come spring lol
Maybe they are a carbon grub eating the old woody matter. Usually it's not a problem. Let it run it's course though
I know jealousy is an ugly trait but I don't mean it negatively. I'm so jealous of where you live and how much you're able to do. I'm stuck in a town where the zoning planner drives around almost military style looking for any signs of non-compliance. They tell you what kind of trees and plants you can put in your front yard and which you can't. I hate it here, but for many reasons I won't go into, i can't move not now anyway. Even gardens, simple vegetable gardens are considered 'farming' If you grow more than your family size will reasonably eat. Wtf, I always grow more than I'll eat at the time of harvest. I give lots away and I preserve. They've yet to come peek under the leaves of my plants to verify quantity, but I wouldn't put it past them.
Hi, I must say that's extremely sad. I truly feel for you. The world we live in now is so full of thought policing and full control. I am just super blessed that my neighbours and local community support me. I truly hope in the future you find a way around this. Thanks for dropping in. I am bringing a series out on small business and micro farming, so if you enjoy a different type of learning experience please join in. Knowledge is empowering and you just never know when it may become useful😀
Hey Marty where did you get the bags for your compost? Do they have a specific name?
Please make more videos of this.
Do you mean the plastic bags, probably not the best but all I can find at the moment. Most whoesalers that sell boxes, things like that have them. I would prefer something better to be honest.
@@martysgarden I’m actually having a hard time finding any. I’ll check with some wholesalers. Thanks Marty.
@@ericburge9198 okay mate..good luck
Maybe burlap bags? Possibly give the customer a discount for bringing the bag back for their next purchase of compost? Idk if compost brings repeat customer during a season
Watching from Uk, why does cardboard not break down well using this method, just stays soggy but worms like it, any suggestions.
It will in time, just keep it damp
How long does it take to kill off the seeds so they wont grow after you've used it?
As long as they cook in the heat process of the compost they die off quickly. Worm farming is the secret formula to success here though ruclips.net/channel/UCnPkv-JUX4Pqn_LYbykzAtwjoin
A lot of money to be made in micro greens if you got a good plan.
For sure, I used to run a micrgreens biz and had a full run in Byron Bay. (See old videos) 😀I like that model. However, with compost you don't lose your product as it can sits for weeks, months without going bad..less things can go wrong. In the future I will possibly get back into micros if I can find some help.
Do you need any state or federal license for make composting business?
Not for worm farming
How much do the 10 dollar bags weigh?
The weight changes all the time depending on moisture retention. I now charge $12 for a 30 litre bag
at 11 sec , what is the name of plant ?
Looks like a Basil
how many bags u can sell each month on average?
Depends on the weather and how much effort I put into it. The more work you put it into the more you can sell.
"super cool"
Can cooked veggies, cheese and meat be composted? Rats aren't an issue as I've got cats.
Yes, they can,,may do
Hey Marty thanks for that useful content videos I love the way u explain everything bt I want to know one of most important thing how to sell your compost when u have ready, i mean where to advertise (in Amazon or ebay) or somewhere how people will know to buy from you and please tell me ur Instagram if u are on it or any social media
Hi, currently I dont have any compost on the market. Maybe I will again, but a way off thanks
