    ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

When accused of being mad, bhagwan ramakrishna paramhansa said: 'how is it possible for the one who thinks of consciousness all the time to lose consciousness?' For the one who has realized, he alone has woken up. To him, all of the world looks like a mere dream, a mere play of the divine dreamer (mother, as sri ramakrishna called it). The brahmajnana path involves self enquiry(who am I ?) and is meant to dissolve the questioner. Simple as it seems, the path of jnana is not at all easy. It requires us to reject all and search for the supreme. It requires discrimination - saying neti to all that is not the divine consciousness. The path of bhakti, on the other hand is easy. It involves the directing of all feelings-good and bad to god alone- the feelings of santa, Dasya, sakhya, vatsalya and madhur. To the one who thinks of himself as in relationship with god, and thinks that all there is (this world and its beings) belong to god alone, loves all as they are all god's. In him the whole of god consiousness manifests, and all, including the attachment to this little self, dissolves in the fire of bhakti and he attains to immortality. For him all has become god including himself. That's why you would not see as many sannyasis in India as Bhaktas from all around. Almost every household pursues bhakti in subtle or strong form. May this land be blessed with holy places from all the religions always. Om namah shivaya.

Hearing these ultimate truths; the dull witted man is bewildered.
Hearing these ultimate truths; the wise man retreats within in ultimate bliss and appears dull witted.
(As Ramakrishna paramhansa appears dull witted in deep samadhi)
      (Ashtavakra)
With regards to your use of the word "questioner", the question is actually already desolved and its just that the questioner doesnt know it (yet). The questioneris on 'the journey' and mustn't be provided the concept that the viel of questions and answers is illusion else one may hinder this blessed journey.
The questioner hasn't yet undercovered the illusory viel to automatically realise this (not that something else is now required). In reality there is no questioner because there are no answers. The supreme reality is and alone is. Questions and answers are just imagined.
On this topic and studying the Astavakra Gita it becomes apparent to be a subtle extension to the Great Bhagavad Gita and imdeed a reminder of Astavakra Gita 2.15: "in reality knowledge, the knowable, and the knower do not exist." Referring ofcourse to Bhagavad Gita chapter 13.
      Shankrachaya, Atma Bodha:
Distinctions between knower, known and knowledge are absent in the true self, Atma. This is because Area's nature is limitless, non-dual consciousness. It alone shines.
      As Kabir says:
I laugh when when I hear that the fish in water is thirsty
I laugh when I hear people go on pilgrimage to find God
God is within. It is not an external attainment that is somewhere in the future and other than here and now. God is here now. Now here. And nowhere because he is nowhere outside of you. God is not other than you. Infact the aspect "other than you" is not. It cannot exist. Therefore nothing exists other than you. Other than God.
Indeed as you say all gets dissolved in the fire of bhakti. Bhakti is indeed without a doubt the greatest and the greatest of all Jnana.
      Hari Aum Tat Sat 🙏

@@jshdhdyjfjdjfhfyyene731 Very true. As ramana maharshi says: ' God cannot be seen because he alone is the seer' ...and Vivekananda puts it forward too : 'God is knowable and unknowable. Knowable in the sense that he is the closest possible thing to you. He alone is the close one all other relations die away. It is because he is you and you are him. He is unknowable because to know an object, there must be a subject. But It is impossible to see god as an object because he himself is a subject. There is no object. All is god and god alone.

Wonderful conversation. This is from the perspective of an unrealised soul. A realised soul already knows that Brahman (consciousness) alone exists and there is no seeker distinct from Brahman, and hence the term self-realization makes sense.

Swamijee, I had a dream that I was stuck up at parapet wall of house. It was so narrow that i was scarring to be there for longer time, neither I could jump up and climb on terrace nor I could take a decision of jumping down on ground ( considering more distances) suddenly I realised that such thing can not happen, I must be dreaming and as soon as I wake up I will find that I am safe on my bed but still neither I could wake myself up, nor could open the eyes. Hence decided that I should jump down (as climbing on terrace tried but could not succeed.) Even knowing that this is 100% dream, I scared of jumping down. But within next 5 minutes I woke up. This was my first time experience of knowing that I am dreaming. What is the meaning of above.

Swamiji's responses to questions are always laced with wit, self-effacing humor and, most important of all, penetrating insights. But this one takes the cake (or cookie!!). Thanks to Swamiji for pointing out in what sense does Advaita term the world we experience to be "false" and how the understanding of it offers a direct path to enlightenment. Yet, I yearn for the next "Ask Swami" session!

Ego is false and when we are in world we see collection of egos acting one upon other and making world move. When one realises there is no ego, he realises this world is born out of agyana (ego) hence one jump to conclusion this world is false. But when one realises more that he was being played by nature and he is part of nature. He is not doer, then unity comes and self identity that I am only this body is fakse then he become jagat(existence). again when one realises more...

Advaita might well be the "highest" teaching. That would be its strength as well as its weakness. The vast majority of us are not going to realize at that height but will feel proud of understanding, intellectually, the highest teaching, mistaking that for realization, which never comes. Personally, I cannot foresee a day where I would be beyond caring whether I am reclining on the beach, happily contemplating the vast ocean and blue sky as opposed to burning alive in a fire or drowning in said ocean. Ramana, Ramakrishna, Buddha, were one of a kind. Who can surrender to that degree?

It comes by itself at some point. Maybe not in this lifetime. But all are destined to grow tired of experiencing all the phenomena, good and bad alike. It is then that slowly you stop discriminating between things you desire and things you reject. You won't get joy from a day at the beach and you won't feel terror when faced with disease, pain or death. All experiences become equal and are let go of.
You can't make that happen, but it happens to all at some point in the course of numerous lifetimes. You can also not stop it from happening. It doesn't seem very appealing to be indifferent towards all experiences, does it. So, the ego usually doesn't really strive for this. Only when the purusha has truly tired of experiencing, you start throwing yourself into the current that pulls you towards indiscrimination. Until then, you practice spirituality to get something out of it, to feel better, to become a better person etc. Nonduality will come quite late in the journey. But it's good to hear about it nonetheless.

Swamiji could have used the concept of illusion to explain it, rather than restricting the discussion to True or False. Mirage is a phenomenon that creates the illusion of water. Only the water believed is false, but the Ingredients behind it and the phenomenon are true (like sunlight, air and objects reflected, and sunlight passing through the heated air undergoing deflection) without which there is no illusion in the first place

    • @indianmilitary
      @indianmilitary 2 года назад +1

Yes, some Advaithians wrongly interpret Maya as the illusion through which Brahman falsely appears as the universe. Maya is the creative shakthi of Brahman and it is absolutely real. It also means the world is also real. Mithya also does not mean false. It means temporary or relative existence. eg Office work may be temporary but not false.
or in the form of cosmic allegories, we can explain that nondual Shiva and duality capable Shakthi or Maya CANNOT exist without each other. It is like saying ADVAITHA and DVAITHA are INCOMPLETE without each other. This is Sankhya Vedic metaphysics (around which the whole hindu tradition was built including its templet tradition, yoga and tantra) which can be validated by logic, double slit quantum experiment and embodied experience.

Change is the truth of the physical universe, therefore any function of that change automatically becomes truth. Nothing is false. It "appears" false to you because of "avidya". The English word "false" doesn't translate to the Sanskrit word "mithya". The more accurate translation would be a mirage. A mirage isn't really false. It appears false to the senses.

My belief is that Self-realization through the path of intellectual investigation - Gyan Jog alone is difficult for most, the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta. Self-realization through Karma Jog alone, (self-less work ) is also difficult for most in the tempting material world. Bhakti Jog ( seeking the intervention of a Supreme Power) is a path to Self-realization conducive to most, starting with a personal objectified 'God', in a visible form, that eventually leads the seeker to a state of Shuddha Gyan (Realisation of the Self) as in the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta.
