I really loved this song as a kid in the 70's, but never realized what sad lyrics it had. I didn't pay attention to lyrics then. Quite possibly the saddest song ever written. But it is beautiful
Actually it's a very mindful awareness of life.....we come in the world alone and leave the world alone. Everyone has relationships that inevitably come to an end....even life long relationships take on a different connection when life ends. The song...to me... isn't as sad as some claim it to be. We all wonder why people die before we might expect and we all deal with sadness in that regard.....but we are blessed for the moments we are able to share. I look at death moving us to a place of community where all those we love in our lives are again upon us with smiles.... acceptance for our struggles in this life.... memories abound...and drama taken from our souls . I don't see it as being alone...but instead being surrounded by the goodness of this life and the life that follows. His mom and dad are together again....and he will feel their warmth when his life here passes. Everything and everyone finds everything they missed in this life.
My dearly departed mom loved him and I got to know his songs a little bit through her. This one used to make me cry all the time. Then first few years after my mom died &I heard it, I couldn’t even listen to it. It hurt too much to think of her love for this song when she was now gone herself. 😢 This is the first time I’ve been able to listen to it without crying, so, thx for that.
Awesome reaction to the lyrics! Back when this came out, you didn't have the internet to see all the words and am radio was fuzzy.... most didnt even catch the first 2 verses.
Gotta say Biz.... I've never heard this one!🤷♀ Kind of a tough one!!😓 DEEP AF.... definitely one I need to take minute to process and decide how I feel about it!!😬 Great reaction though... your commentary made it worth suffering the mental/emotional strain the song gave me!!!💯😜🤣😂 You rock!!👊❤ EDIT: Sorry Biz, I was gonna shut my mouth but I can't!!😅 SOOOOO... who the hell wants you to "shut up" when you're reacting to a song (9:02 mark)????? UGH!!!😖 SERIOUSLY, for anyone who may ever come across this comment..... it's a freaking "REACTION"!!!! He's SUPPOSED to talk!!! If all you want is to hear the song.... you can listen to it on your own time!!🤦♀🤷♀ I am here to hear BIZ'S thoughts on the music, be it good, bad, or indifferent.... it's all good!!💯 My thoughts.... keep doing YOU Biz!!!❤ Peace and light fam...💞
I have recently suffered major heartbreak. losing my Dad a few weeks ago. Man it's real pain. ❤️✌️ Now that I've cried, I'll go over to your other spot and laugh. ❤️
This was a hard song to listen to after my father passed away in 1994 even harder now that Mum passed away two weeks ago doesn't mean I won't stop listening to it even though it makes me cry besides having a good cry is good for you once in a while.
Gilbert O'Sullivan in an interview, said this song was not about his life. It was just an idea that he came up with and wrote. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer contemplating suicide after being left at the altar after his bride deserted him, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. Also, his mother was still alive when the song was written.
Gilbert O'Sullivan is a brilliant wordsmith, "Claire" was another big hit of his that describes the charming innocence of his friends daughter that made it impossible to get upset at her mischievous ways
Have you heard, "Seasons In The Sun" by Terry Jacks? It might be too much to listen to those 2 songs back to back. Then, jump into a Carpenter's rabbit hole and start with "I'll Say Goodbye to Love." Great reaction to a great song!
This song is sadder than a thrift store painting! And a favorite of my youth. Gilbert O’Sullivan is a masterful storyteller and gifted musician. It would be difficult to make younger people understand how difficult it could be to find a song after hearing in once on radio - before the internet, MTV, etc. you were at the mercy of what bits you could remember and knowledgable and empathetic record store employees. In part, this drive me to open a CD store much later in life when CDs were a fairly new way of enjoying music. That was fun and rewarding from 1988-1998. I remember telling one of my suppliers that if the labels could not put their greed aside and get their shit together with regard to digital music that some kid in a college dorm room would end up controling the music business. I was not too far off. When people ask me now what has changed I tell them it used to be that water was free and people paid for music, now it’s the other way around. Terrific job on this one Biz. Very few reactors have done this one, sadly.
He got stood up at the altar. Then his father died and his mother never spoke another word. It's just so sad and what's really crazy is sometimes I need to listen to it, maybe to have a good cry cuz God knows I've had my heart broken as we all have. Just one of those things I guess that a good cry will make you feel better.
He got stood up. Previously, his father, and then his mother, both died. And h's about to step off a local tower....... It's just soooo poignant! And with such terse lyrics, and the up beat melody and orchestration. A complete masterpiece! (From a 21 year old!!!!)
KUDOS to you my man, its tuff to admit you like something in this case a song in which a perception of weak it may make you look. Example? I heard a comedian say? Nobody admits to liking the Bee Gees, but alone in your car they come on? You singing and know every word. Especially as men. And you may hear this song now, and it doesnt hit home, Until you lose your parents, or lose the love of your life. Or when you need a friend anyone, and cant find one. Thats when it touches you. And Kudos for being man enough to say it.
If we're going to go down this path, some well-known tear-jerkers: "Honey," by Bobby Goldsboro "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks And, I mentioned in another reaction "Sylvia's Mother" by Dr. Hook. Bring the kleenex!
Matrimony by Gilbert is an interesting counterpoint to this song but you really need to listen to his latest single, Take Love featuring KT Tunstall. He's 75 and he's still turning out great records.
Christ, this brings back memories of when I still listened to the Top 30 on Belgian radio in the early seventies. What are you trying to do to me, Bizz? Gilbert had his moments of fame with "Get Down" and this song, sporting a cap and his cat in some clips, but beyond that, he failed miserably. Good try, but not good enough to survive. Better get to Slade or Sweet when venturing into early seventies Euro rock.
He also had a big hit with Clair. He still putting out albums today at the age of 75 and he's touring across the world so I don't think he failed at all.
From Ireland. Lovely reaction to this beautiful song. He is Irish, wrote many great songs. This one -"Alone Again, Naturally.." is poetry set to a ..."Life goes on..." upbeat melody. So glad that you listened to the lyrics, so deeply human. He was young writing such thoughtful lyrics "Nothing Rhymed" is a great song too, words timeless -- "...Will I glance at my screen And see real human beings Starve to death right in front of my eyes..."? Timeless. Here's a beautiful song that i hope you might enjoy, "Mid Air" by Scottish songwriter Paul Buchanan. Simple perfection. ruclips.net/video/EE70AgkeTZc/видео.html
This is one of those shitty tunes( not my genre of music so I will call it shitty) that gets in your blood. When you hear it won't go away. Happy sounding dark tune lol well disguised. This one and Me and Little Andy by Dolly. Dark fuckin tunes out of no where.

It's truly beautiful
Amazing, Gilbert was 21 when he wrote this.
I lost my dad at 19 . 43 years ago .This song always makes me sad ..yet i love it...
GBY brother.
Haven't heard this in a long time. I don't know about his catalog. My heart was broken when my one and only died 3 years ago, after 41 years together.
So sorry.
Never gets old. Depressing but still a classic!!
The #1 song of 1972 (6 weeks at the top) and one of the top 10 songs of the decade. Nice reaction.

Looking at the last ten or so songs look like the playlist on a typical radio station in the mid 70 s. Takes me back
I have recently suffered major heartbreak. losing my Dad a few weeks ago. Man it's real pain. ❤️✌️
Now that I've cried, I'll go over to your other spot and laugh. ❤️
So sorry for your loss.
I would never want you to shut up bruh! Your commentary is the best!
Beautiful and compassionate reaction. God bless, friend.
Big hit on AM radio back in the day, Gilbert was like a Irish Paul McCartney, very talented guy.
I never realized, he was left at the alter to his wedding, she stood him up.
Thank you sir, a concise analysis , super sad , uk bricklayer.
"Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics.
You're welcome.

It's always too soon to lose your mom and dad.....song is reflective of times together.... everyone gets old....... enjoy the memories
This song always used to make me cry when I was a young teenager. So sad.
"Why, Oh Why, Oh Why" is another sad but good one from Gilbert
It's like funky dark easy listening music
Gilbert O'Sullivan is a brilliant wordsmith, "Claire" was another big hit of his that describes the charming innocence of his friends daughter that made it impossible to get upset at her mischievous ways
Heart breaking song

Gilbert almost made me shed a tear my G. Peace !
Huge hit in the summer of '72.
AWESOME SONG..
AWESOME REVIEW.

It captures the feelings of grief. We all get them, but we have to get through. It's a very observant song.

Soothing dark sound !!! That’s a lot of the 70’s
All these years later and I never caught on that that part was about su*cide. 👀

If you want another heartbreaking song listen to Without You by Nilsson also from 1972. One of the saddest yet beautiful songs you could ever hear.
This song is in my soul till I die.

☮️💙💙💙😢
Alone again bro😢
Upbeat lyrics to a very very tragic tune.
Other hits of Gilbert are Clair, Happiness Is Me And You and the uptempo Get down.
This guys writes lyrics and melody like a savage. Try Clair. Talk about a beautiful feel good song. Try Get Down if you want to see hiom groove out.
Biz, You Need to do a reaction to a song he did several years ago About those who died at 9/11 it's called Alll they wanted to say.
Loved this song when it came out. Not much from him after this hit.

I was wondering why you were dancing to this song!
People should react to the original 1972 studio version. It's better than this live rendition!

Looks like you were with the beat, but not hearing the lyrics.
Nothing rhymed 👌
It’s not AC/DC but it’s ok

Where's that snotty nose rez kids..indigenous resistance or prolific the rapper..black snakes! ?
Biz- yes, dark words in the song...Indications of freemasonry in the video Biz...just sayin 🙄
