Lift Every Voice and Sing - Al Green & Deniece Williams

- In 1985 Miller Lite asked me to come up with a "meaningful" project for Black History Month. I decided to arrange and record a celebratory contemporary version of "Lift Every Voice and Sing". I called good friends Al Green and Deniece Williams who agreed to sing the duet, backed by Patti Austin, Roberta Flack, Melba Moore and myself.
The band consisted of the studio musicians who made up John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd's Blues Brothers Band, along with other notable musicians, including the late great Yogi Horton and jazz legend Jon Faddis. One of my favorite arrangers, Leon Pendarvis penned the charts and was Musical Director. Husband and wife actors Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee provided the voice-over narration for the commercials.
Recorded in New York at Clinton Studios, it started out as a jingle but ended up a full length recording.
This is the actual video from the recording session. Al was 8 hours late, which is why it's dark when he's arriving. It's a fun-filled sneak peek inside what goes on (or used to go on) in the recording studio. Enjoy!

Wow this is my first time hearing Al Green & Deniece Williams singing this beautiful duet song this must be their first time doing a duet song together Al green and Deniece Williams 💙❤💜💚💛💗🙏💐🦋🥳
This song is a blessing from God! ❤️
Wow this was awesome. This culture is so rich...I am sure that more of our histories and her-stories are yet to told. My prayers are for everyone. Keep God first. God Bless!!!!!!!!!
Back when you had to have REAL talent to sing, I miss great music 🎶
I was present for this and what an experience it was. Look at the collection of talent who were so willing to do this. I worked at Mingo-Jones for years and at a time when talented artists gladly supported one another as well as a project such as this. I still have my video cassette of this. Lol
Must be amazing memory. Deniece Williams voice is amazing
🤔
Beverley must have been an unforgettable experience. I can't seem to have enough of this song. I have listened to about 15 different singers to day. Great song.
Soooo awesome.
They sound awful, like they trying to sound too soulful and mis the mark.
It's a such thing as over doing something and they over did it. 🤕
I felt so many things watching this I almost combusted...God bless all
African Americans for giving us this and more.
Even though I didn’t grow up in a Black household my dad introduced me to Lift Every Voice through this rendition. Such a beautiful song of triumph.

Awesome music is the only good thing that came out of corporate America shoving their products down our throats constantly. They joyfulness in the performers, especially the lady in the blue-violet dress is beautiful to watch.

First time seeing this, and I enjoyed it, the black national anthem!!
So much JOY, love and talent in that room.
My. My, My! Hallelujah y'all.🙏👏 👏
So far as I know, every singer in that room is still with us.😊
@Gina Marie ALS, not Parkinson’s. Just as career-ending, though, you’re right.
With these Kings and Queens LEGENDS, WHERE ARE SONGS LIKE THIS ONE. The music industry is so screwed up that noone is UNITED anymore.
Beautiful Beautiful 💜✊💯👍 Simply Beautiful. Al Green and Denice Williams did their Thang . Hallelujah . Background singers tore it up 👍👍👍 I was in tears . Got the Holy Spirit moving through my body. My My ✊✊✊👑💐🌺🌹🌻
How lucky we were, back in the day to have this kind of talent to entertain. Most of us probably took for granted things would always be that way. You have to look high and low these days to find superior talent, live instruments, good music and great lyrics ...
This room was busting with super talent that day, WOW.
This makes me want to hear Black Butterfly again after all these years!
So much talent here. I love us. One of the Greatest song ever
Super Bowl 2023 brought me here… 👍🏿☝🏿✌🏿✊🏿🙏🏿👏🏾
This is singing as it should be, with genuine musicians. They know music and how to play it. Pure natural talent. Ladies acting like ladies and men acting like men. First time hearing this. Thank you.💕
RAW TALENTS IN ABUNDANCE.
Denice still lives in my heart.
If this doesn’t make us Lift Every Voice & Sing, I don’t know what else will!🗣🎶 ❤️🔥🎵❤️🔥🎵❤️🔥🎶Some of these voices have aged, and others have perished. But the message will Never die and it’s timeless!❤️🔥
Iam very pleased 2 hear these talented singers perform 2gather. Still I think abt Mary & Florence who were not treated like family, great voices tht weren't recorded 4 our joy & their brilliant talent. They deserved soo much more than they RECIEVED!!!
No matter how hard it may be in this world of oppression, I wouldn’t change my skin for anything. I’m a proud, educated, 22yo woman. I love coming back to this when I need a push! ❤️🖤💚💛
They pucked the right one in. Deniece Williams for she carried that song all the way thru!! I do love that rendition
Man this about the best in the business, I have been listening to Al Green for most of my life and if you read this Deniece I am still in love with you.
Can't get enough of this video.
They added a new meaning to the song. Never before. Never since then. History was made. Hallelujah!
Simply beautiful!!!!!! *****
Praise God
The 80s. A time in which the mere atmosphere exuded happiness and no pressure. Great to witness this!
Yes!!! I miss the 80s so much!!
The 80s will always have remembrance. Great pieces were birthed
The song itself makes me proud to be who I am but to here it arranged this elegantly and with the "A" listed talent makes me more unapologetically proud to be who I am....BLACK! !!
Terrance Hobbs I am unapologetically American and this anthem needs voice - the all inclusive voice of our nation. How great would that be.
💖
@@Tiddbitga8 if only being American and unapologetically so was enough to make all other Americans give you the love they would give a stranger that has similar features, this song wouldn’t even exist. As is, we can allow those seen as the least among us to create something that makes them feel better that doesn’t include all of us. This song is from a time that we will hopefully never see repeated. Let it be a reminder of where we were, why many things are how they are, and what we need to continue to fight against.
*hear
@@alvinphillips4546 That is unapologetically as DEEP as truth itself!
Is it that out of Racial Injustices come Creativity, Benevolence, Mercy, Spiritual Upliftment and Praises to God and all human kind?
More talent in her pinky finger than all of today’s artists combined
Except that I saw her about a year and a half ago, and she's still got it. So she is one of today's artists.
legends and icons all over this video wow...amazing
This is AMAZING Mother!! Still feels like an honor that you were my teacher! Love and miss you!!
How have I never seen this 😳!!!!!! AMAZING ✨🤸🏽♀️🔥 Makes me PROUD 2023 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

Beverle, I am green with envy!
I met Me. Green at his music publishers where I was in the classical division while part of my heart was in R&B! - before his pastoring days - and I was so bowled over that I was rendered speechless.

The thumbs down just don’t know nor do they understand. That’s ok, praying for you 🙏🏾!
I saw Deneice in concert promoting one of her gospel records. We all know what she sounds like, but she sure is cuuute too!
I was in 7th or 8th grade in '84 now in 2022, I am overjoyed to see the people I heard sing growing up, continues to be committed to their craft uplifting us all. 🌿🌿💞💞💞💞🌿🌿Rest in Peace to those who have passed on to The Lord's Glory.
Love this song. Al Green and Deniece Williams singing together is awesome and amazing!!!They sing with the anointing and really touch you deep down in your soul!!!

One of the GREATEST SOUL SINGERS OF ALL TIMES Al Green. This was a beautiful arrangement
Al Green takes my breath away!!! 💓💓💓
This brought a special joy to my heart…
ABSOLUTELY EPITOME OF BLACK EXCELLENCE!
Beautiful. Thank you Thank you Thank you! ♡♡♡
I love this song which embellishes Black strength and fortitude. I have taught all to sing this song with reverence and love. To embrace every lyric, every word in honor of our triumphs as well as our despair as a kidnapped and culturally raped people who have endured & accomplished a spiritual rebirth in this "Promised Land". In remembrance of our valiant fore-parents, shed a tear of hope and gratitude & "let us march on till victory is won".
Deniece and Al should have recorded an album together in those days. I think one voice complements the other.🎶🎶 They all sound marvelous 👌❤️
Al Green's voice...classic and nostalgic too. I remember my dad playing his music on 8 tracks.
You, too, huh?
Wow, thanks for sharing this. Deniece Williams is one of my all-time favorite singers. I love her voice.
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME AND BEAUTIFUL
Ok so please I can't be the only one going through an incredible black moment to be blasted at the end with a Miller Lite Ad!!! 😂🤣😂🤣 man they stay profiting off us cuz now I want a Miller Lite! 😂🤣
I know you're joking, but don't forget that somebody had to pay for this effort. Miller put a lot of faith behind Mingo-Jones and Ms McD... and I'll join you for that beer!
All these hard working, talented legends in one room!!!!
So much joy!
Wow, I never knew this existed. The amount of talent in this video. OMG.
feels like I'm in church 😇
So beautiful. Praise God.
Our people are so talented. I love it.
Amen. Amen as we rise with the sun..
That's Deniece!!!! All the voices are beautiful! This was fantastic!
Great video, featuring a who's who in R&B music, including Deniece Williams and the Rev. Al Green (two of my favorites). Thanks a million for presenting this.
What an inspired and great pairing. It's such a pity they never recorded an album together back in the day.
38 years ago- magnificent voices singing our national anthem with uplifting joy!
Phenomenally awesome!

It's so darn good to come across these type videos years later. It's really like listening to new music! Loved it!! Good to see Mr. Ossie Davis as well.

Oh thank God!!! Even the Queen of Soul herself could not move me with the original.
I agree with the 2 judges. She does have potential. I hope she comes back.

Now I like this arrangement!!!
Now this was a piece of pure unadulterated perfection...stunning voices melding into one. SOOO beautiful 😍
Love love love it !!!!!
Thank you for sharing this. These people are true legends.... Loved seeing the great Ossie Davis..❣️
I have never heard this version. Lord, it had me emotional. I am proud to be a moor, nigga, colored, and black. They were all marvelous!! No egos, just pure unadulterated singing. Awesome!! Kids these days have no clue that is our anthem.
Never forgot the lyrics to this most beautiful poem and anthem. We used to sing this every morning in Mrs Wilson’s 5th grade class at Cusseta Rd. Elementary at the beginning of each school day.
An abundance of GOD given talent gathered like this is so amazing!! Thank you ❤
This is Great BLACK talent.
